REVIEW – KISS OF VENGEANCE by S. Young

SYNOPSIS

A standalone adult paranormal romance from New York Times Bestselling author Samantha Young writing as S. Young.

Fionn Mór was once a high king of Ireland; a fierce warrior who led his tribes against the invading fae. It was a war he couldn’t win and to save his family he turned consort for the Fae Queen. Fionn escaped as the thing he once despised, and the people he loved betrayed him for it. Now, centuries later, it’s time to reopen the gates to Faerie to take his revenge against the Faerie Queen.

At sixteen Rose Kelly discovered family secrets that changed her forever. Years after, she’s still lost, traveling across Europe in search of that elusive missing ‘something’. When she’s attacked by a vampire, not only is she wrenched into a supernatural underworld she never knew existed, a knock on the head releases a spell on her mind and unlocks powers beyond her wildest imaginings. And with them more questions. Questions Fionn Mór claims to have answers to.

Following the powerful and enigmatic Fionn to Ireland, Rose quickly realizes she’s a pawn in his plan for vengeance. What begins as a passionate battle of wills leads to an inexplicable but undeniable connection. One that will force them to face an impossible choice between the deepest love… and the darkest revenge.

Butterflies fluttered in Rose’s belly at the thought of seeing Fionn again. Who knew it was possible to have such conflicting feelings for someone? Rose was still unbearably attracted to him, still felt protective toward him, and yet she was a furious, churning volcano of bitterness and resentment too. Rose had sacrificed herself to save Fionn’s life…and he wouldn’t even consider giving up his revenge for her.

Samantha Young’s newest series brings us into a paranormal world filled with Fae, Werewolves, Vampires, and Witches & Warlocks. She’s proven that her storytelling capabilities are not tied down to one specific genre. In ”KISS OF VENGEANCE” we dive deeper into the Fae world and are caught up in the slow burn romance between Fionn Mor and Rose Kelly. In the previous book, we were given a teaser to the story of the once human King of Ireland, and Aine, the Queen of the Fae. Aine was obsessed with Fionn and when he continuously rejected her, she turned him into the one thing he despised most of all—a Fae. Fionn is determined to open the gates to the Fae kingdom and exact his revenge on Aine. He needs the blood of a Fae to do so and is on a mission to find one of the three still in existence on earth.

Fionn stumbles across Rose by accident while on the hunt for the psychic Fae, Niamh. Up until their paths crossed, Rose did not know that supernatural beings truly existed nor that she was, in fact, one of the most powerful of them all. A blow to the head undoes a binding spell and slowly starts to unleash Rose’s powers. Fionn and Rose share an instant attraction – something so powerful neither of them has felt before. Rose has no idea that Fionn, who is helping to train her control her new-found abilities, has plans to end her life to finally get the vengeance he’s been waiting centuries for. He uses all of his self-control to keep his desires tamped down, while Rose grows increasingly impatient with his constant rejection. This back and forth between the two goes on for more than the entire first half of the book. The author took the slow burn to another level. Once things start to heat up between Fionn and Rose, the story becomes increasingly angsty, steamy and laced with fast-paced action! Best of all, we are reunited with Thea and Conall during the thrilling finale.

The next book, which centers around Kiyo and Niamh, promises to be another page-turner!

REVIEW – JUST ONE YEAR by Penelope Ward

SYNOPSIS

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

The beginning of my sophomore year in college was off to a rough start.
On the first day of orientation, I had an altercation with an infuriating British dude in a campus bathroom.
(The ladies’ room was out of order. So, I used the men’s room. Don’t judge.)
I got home later that night and realized that the foreign student we were expecting to rent a room in my parents’ house was allergic to our cat.
So, the spare room went to someone else: Caleb—the British guy from the men’s room.
And so it began…my love-hate story with Caleb Yates. Or was it hate-love in that order?

The guy knew how to push every one of my buttons.
Sometimes I’d email him to express my aggravation and disdain.
He’d actually rewrite my own words and send them back to me.
That was the type of infuriating person Caleb was.
So frustrating.
And…
Sometimes incredibly funny and endearingly sweet.
And hot.

He eventually grew on me, and Caleb soon became one of my best friends that year.
Too bad he was headed back to England soon, so nothing could happen between us—for so many reasons.
I definitely couldn’t fall in love with him, especially since all we had was just one year.

My heart was already in so deep it was breaking. It didn’t matter if Caleb was physically inside of me. He was already inside my heart and soul.

There’s not much that I didn’t love about ”JUST ONE YEAR” by Penelope Ward. The Hero is a gorgeous, charismatic exchange student from England. The Heroine is a beautiful introvert that has never had her heart wrapped up in a guy until she meets Caleb Yates—the foreign exchange student who has moved into her family’s home. Caleb and Teagan’s first encounter is extremely embarrassing but was still a ”meet cute”. Their awkward beginning quickly turns into a close friendship that eventually sparks into a powerful attraction that Caleb is fiercely opposed to pursuing because he’d never willingly break Teagan’s heart. His life is in London and hers is in Boston. A long-distance relationship would never work, but Teagan has never felt so strongly about anyone until Caleb came into her life. She’s willing to risk certain heartbreak for the chance to be with the only man she’s ever fallen in love with.

Their story is heart-achingly angsty and it was pure torture waiting for Caleb and Teagan to finally let the pent up attraction take over. This is yet another book to add to my long list of favorites by this incredible author!

The fragility of my existence vibrated through every cell in my body. The perfect life existed on a narrow ledge with a sea of tragedy awaiting ten stories down on the other side.

Each time I finish reading a Jewel E. Ann book, I become more in awe of her as an author. The Life Duet is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I inhaled this book. Once I picked it up, it was quite impossible to put down. It left me on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next. So many questions were spinning in my head. What you do learn early on is that there is an undeniable villain and there is incomprehensible betrayal, but the lines between right and wrong are blurred. I struggled with some of the stuff that happened. I knew it wasn’t right but Jewel spins it in such a unique way. I swear I’ve never read anything like this. It’s otherworldly!!

REVIEW – ANGRY GOD (All Saints High, #3) by L.J. Shen

SYNOPSIS

Vaughn Spencer.
They call him an angry god.
To me, he is nothing but a heartless prince.
His parents rule this town, its police, every citizen and boutique on Main Street.
All I own is a nice, juicy grudge against him for that time he almost killed me.
Between hooking up with a different girl every weekend, breaking hearts, noses and rules, Vaughn also finds the time to bully little ole’ me.
I fight back, tooth and nail, never expecting him to chase me across the ocean after we graduate high school.
But here he is, living with me in a dark, looming castle on the outskirts of London.
A fellow intern. A prodigal sculptor. A bloody genius.
They say this place is haunted, and it is.
Carlisle Castle hides two of our most awful secrets.
Vaughn thinks he can kill the ghosts of his past, but what he doesn’t know? It’s my heart he’s slaying.

We were an unfinished business, personal and always walking the tightrope between love and hate. But we were always something, Len. We will always be something.

I have to admit, Vaughn has not been my favorite character in the All Saints High series. He’s always been a little too moody and aloof for my liking, and I was hoping that he’d get paired up with someone who was his complete opposite. Lenora wasn’t my first choice for his love interest. After having finished reading ”ANGRY GOD”, I can honestly say that I was completely wrong about everything. I didn’t expect to enjoy Vaughn and Lenora’s story as much as I did. I love a good enemies-to-lovers romance, but I am not a fan of the Hero being a complete douchebag. We learn that Vaughn isn’t inherently the cruel monster that he lets everyone believe that he is. There’s a reason why he keeps to himself a lot and doesn’t show emotions and that made this character have so much more depth than I ever expected of him.

Lenora was the perfect fit for Vaughn. She kept him on his toes and challenged him when no one else would dare to. She softened out his rough edges and he helped to make her the fighter that she grew up to be. That is what I consider a perfect match. I still hold Knight close to my heart but I now have a new appreciation of Vaughn Spencer as well.

REVIEW – WILD AT HEART (Wild, #2) by K.A. Tucker

SYNOPSIS

From the internationally best-selling author of The Simple Wild comes the continuation of a woman’s journey to Alaska and a life she never imagined for herself.

Calla Fletcher returns to Toronto a different person, struggling to find direction and still very much in love with the rugged bush pilot she left behind. When Jonah arrives on her doorstep with a proposition she can’t dismiss, she takes the leap and rushes back to Alaska to begin their exciting future together.

But Calla soon learns that even the best intentions can lead to broken promises, and that compromise comes with a hefty price—a log cabin in interior rural Alaska that feels as isolating as the western tundra.

With Jonah gone more than he’s home, one neighbor who insists on transforming her into a true Alaskan, and another who seems more likely to shoot her than come to her aid, Calla grapples with forging her own path. In a world with roaming wildlife that has her constantly watching over her shoulder and harsh conditions that stretch far beyond the cold, dark, winter months, just stepping outside her front door can be daunting.

This is not the future Calla had in mind, leaving her to fear that perhaps she is doomed to follow in her mother’s fleeing footsteps after all.

*****FIVE++++++ STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I rush toward him, but hesitate when I get there—part of me wants to throw myself at him, the other part is terrified that he’ll hold me at arm’s length, that’ it’s too late, that the slope we fell down yesterday was too steep, the climb up too slippery.

“Wild” is by far my favorite K.A. Tucker series! ”WILD AT HEART” reunites us with Calla and Jonah. They are about to embark on their new life together as a couple in the rural town of “Trapper’s Crossing” in Alaska. Calla has left her family, friends and the life of a city girl behind to follow the rugged pilot who captured her heart when she spent a few months in Alaska getting to know her estranged father who was dying from cancer. The first book was magical. I went into book two with high expectations and the author did not let me down one bit. She takes us on another journey with the sheltered city girl who somehow finds herself in the same cold and isolating locale that ended up destroying her parents’ marriage.

Calla and Jonah buy a home that sits on 100 acres of land. Jonah’s trying to get his new business going and Calla is putting all of her energy into making their new house a home. Promises made are soon broken and Calla is starting to experience many lonely nights while Jonah takes on jobs that keep him away from home for days on end. She makes friends with some of the eccentric townsfolk who end up helping her in ways she never could have imagined. It is the bonds that she makes with these people which tugs on the heartstrings and gives this story so much depth and increased my enjoyment one hundred times over!! My hope is that our journey is not over with these amazing group of characters!

REVIEW – UNBREAKABLE (Cloverleigh Farms, #4) by Melanie Harlow

SYNOPSIS

In hindsight, I should not have had that fifth mimosa at Breakfast with Santa.

Or the sixth, seventh, and eighth.

But my shame over the public meltdown that resulted was nothing compared to being abandoned by my husband of fifteen years for a much younger woman—and did I mention she’s pregnant?

For the sake of my children and my pride, I packed up and headed for my childhood home and the small town where I grew up. Cloverleigh Farms would be the perfect place for a fresh start.

Falling for Henry DeSantis wasn’t part of the plan.

Sure, he’s easy on the eyes and hard in the bedroom (also the hallway, the bathtub, and on top of his desk), but he’s newly divorced too, and things between us are moving so fast I’m afraid neither one of us has had enough time to heal. Not to mention the fact that I’m a single mom now—my kids have to come first.

But Henry makes me feel beautiful and sexy and wanted and strong—I haven’t felt that way in years. We understand each other, and when I’m in his arms, I’m tempted to trust again. To love again. To let myself be loved without fear.
But deep down, I’m terrified.

Is this all too much, too soon? Or am I a fool to let a second chance at happily ever after pass me by?

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****4.5 STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I’d moved here to find peace and security, to feel grounded and safe and strong, to create a haven for myself and my children, to piece my heart back together again and keep it protected. Instead, I’d fallen in love. I felt exposed and raw and vulnerable, and I hated myself for it.

The ”Cloverleigh Farms” series keeps leaving me wanting more. I’ve enjoyed getting swept up in each Sawyer sister’s whirlwind romance. ”UNBREAKABLE” is the oldest Sawyer sister, Sylvia’s story. She wasn’t a huge presence in the previous books, because she was the only sibling that didn’t live near Cloverleigh Farms, but now she and her two children have come home to start a new life. Her failed marriage has left her a bit insecure but she’s determined to give her children a loving and stable environment. Never in a million years did she expect that moving back home would also bring a once in a lifetime love.

Henry DeSantis works for the Sawyers on Cloverleigh Farms. He’s also recently divorced. Henry spends all of his waking hours working in the vineyards. He prefers the solitude because it allows him to avoid having to explain to everyone why his marriage of ten years fell apart. On paper, this character seems a bit depressing and one dimensional, but as soon as you put Henry and Sylvia in a scene together, the story comes alive! Their chemistry is insane and their steamy scenes will get your heart racing. I was rooting for these two to overcome the emotional baggage and other obstacles that stood between them.

REVIEW – THE LIFE THAT MATTERED (Life Duet, #1) by Jewel E Ann

Evelyn made me feel more vulnerable than I ever thought humanly possible. She was the beginning and the end, the mother of my children, the keeper of my heart, the reason my lungs took breaths, my absolute favorite…everything. Wanting her felt like an honor. Needing her felt like a failure.

Leave it to Jewel E Ann to write another spell-binding and captivating story. The prologue left me with a feeling of unease that stayed with me throughout the entire book. I already had my mind set on how the plot was going to unfold and I found myself not trusting and also strongly disliking the pair of secondary characters who are key players in the ”Life Duet”. This had me questioning the intelligence of the heroine, Evie, but, I couldn’t stop myself from loving Ronin. He’s extremely charismatic and a true scene-stealer. His truths are heartbreaking and other worldly. My mind was blown by his revelation, and I should have known that there’s no way that Jewel would write a predictable story.

Book one ends with a huge cliffhanger. It’s going to feel like torture having to wait an entire month for the release of ”The Life You Stole”.

”THE ROGUE CAPTAIN” is the sixth installment of the Lost Planet series and is just as fun and steamy as all of the books to precede it. These sexy alien alphas of the planet Mortuus are eternally loyal and insatiable lovers. Every human female that ends up with one as a mate is treated like a true Queen. This is Theron and Willow’s story. Theron is the rogue captain of the Mayvina and Willow is Molly’s long lost daughter. Willow is fiercely independent and headstrong. She has no intention of becoming anyone’s mate, and Theron is all alpha with an overbearing ego. These two bicker to no end but it doesn’t take long for things to heat up between them. There’s plenty of steamy scenes and action to make this one a truly enjoyable read! Looking forward to more of this entertaining series.

REVIEW – DOCTOR DEAREST by R.S. Grey

SYNOPSIS

Natalie

Dr. Easton is part man, part myth.
He’s a formidable surgeon. Highly respected in his field.
He also happens to be an ex-collegiate quarterback with a classically handsome face.
Are you catching on yet?
He’s horrible.
Beautiful.
A walking Ralph Lauren ad.
He’s also so off limits he should come with a warning label: This way lies heartache.

Not only is he an attending at the hospital where I’m training, he’s also my brother’s best friend. If you’ve lost count, that’s two reasons why I plan on putting this ridiculous crush behind me. Besides, it’s definitely not mutual.

Dr. Easton has never once paid me special attention. No tempting smirks. Not even one subtle innuendo. To him, I’m just another resident—all but invisible.

Connor

For the last five years, I’ve mentored Natalie in the OR, stayed in line, and kept my hands to myself, but it’s been agonizing.

Natalie is trouble in scrubs. A walking temptation I’ve been forced to ignore.

For so long, I’ve wanted her in silence. By the time fate finally gets around to throwing me a bone, my patience has run out.

Natalie’s brother is leaving town, and he wants me to watch over her while he’s gone.

He has no idea how I feel about her.
Neither does she.
But she will.

Haven’t you heard good things come to those who wait, Natalie?
Well… I’ve done my waiting.

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Generously Providded by Author}

A small part of me will always think of him as unattainable. A man I’ve had a crush on for years. A man I’ve watched and wanted from afar. A man who’s friends with my older brother and therefore, inherently off-limits.

Natalie and Connor are doctors at the same hospital. Connor has also been Natalie’s supervisor in the past, but now she’s finished her fifth year of residency and she is starting as an attending in the BICU. This is not their only tie to each other. Connor is her brother’s best friend and has been the secret object of her affections for many years. Little does she know that Connor has been crushing on her as well. Now the two are going to be roommates for the next few months, while her brother is away for work and Connor’s townhome is under renovations. Connor is no longer able to bury his feelings for Nathalie and he’s making it known that he’s in pursuit of her. Usually, with this trope, the couple deals with hiding their relationship from the older sibling, and while that was one of the minor obstacles in their way, the biggest issue was Natalie’s inability to read the situation. Connor all but spelled out what his intentions were towards her but Natalie blindly stuck to her insecurities that seemed to have no basis. She’s spent most of her life focusing on her career and closing herself off to personal relationships that it has become somewhat of a handicap for her. She’s unable to pick up on very blatant social queues.

I’d have liked it if the angst had stemmed from different circumstances but overall, I thought the book was entertaining.

In this moment, I hated myself. Because here I was, leading him straight into the fire. But as always, I would be beside him. Together we would burn and, in the very depths of the inferno, we would be reborn.

Flame has always been my favorite Hades Hangman. He and Maddie are the most tragic and beautiful couple out of all the characters in this series. Their story is too great to be told in just one book. These two have suffered such unimaginable horrors when they were innocent little children. Flame, in his early years, lived the same life that the beautiful women who were saved by the sadistic cult once endured. To most, he appears to be psychotic, but to his Maddie, he is that innocent and lonely boy, who came from horrifying beginnings but still can love her beyond measure. Maddie has always been Flame’s anchor and his haven, but he’s starting to revert to his old ways. He’s free-falling into a dark abyss in which Maddie may not be able to pull him out from, and it looks like his brother, Ash, is destined to suffer the same fate.

Not only do we get more of Flame, Maddie, and Ash, but we are reunited with all the other Hangmen and their loves. The lives of the Hangmen and their families are once again being threatened, but this time by a new and unknown enemy. They may be far more dangerous than anyone they’ve battled against before. I can’t wait to find out what Tillie Cole has in store for us next!
