Love and life sure can be scary. But not living your best life, not loving as hard as you can…what a terrible waste that would be. And the man standing in front of me is the best of everything.

I found myself loving this story from the very beginning. Second chance romances are one of my favorite tropes, and Kylie Scott took this trope and added a cool twist that I have only ever encountered in one other story years ago. Three months after a messy breakup with her boyfriend, Clementine is physically attacked by a stranger which leaves her with a permanent case of amnesia. Clem shows up at her ex’s tattoo shop, hoping to get some insights into her past but is met with hostility from Ed and his co-workers.

When Clem explains her predicament to Ed, it seems to soften his attitude just the tiniest bit and as they come to spend time together, he notices that Clem is no longer the neurotic and insecure woman that she once was. These two get the chance to fall in love all over again as if it were the first time and it was so much fun getting to experience it with them. Plus there’s the added bonus of some mystery and suspense thrown in, which I have to admit, was pretty easy to solve and yet I still enjoyed seeing how the story unfolded.

This is going down as one of my top favorite reads by Kylie Scott. There were no sexy bad boy rockers to be found anywhere in this story and yet I loved it something fierce!

REVIEW & EXCERPT BLITZ – IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME by Kylie Scott

“Addictive like all Kylie Scott books, you’ll swoon, laugh, ache, put your life on hold, and compulsively read until the wee hours of the night—only to reread the whole thing the next morning. Perfection!” – Katy Evans, New York Times bestselling author

Returning home for her father’s wedding was never going to be easy for Adele. If being sent away at eighteen hadn’t been bad enough, the mess she left behind when she made a pass at her dad’s business partner sure was.

Fifteen years older than her, Pete had been her crush for as long as she could remember. But she’d misread the situation—confusing friendliness for undying love. Awkward. Add her father to the misunderstanding, and Pete was left with a broken nose and a business on the edge of ruin. The man had to be just as glad as everyone else when she left town.

Seven years later, things are different. Adele is no longer a kid, but a fully grown adult more than capable of getting through the wedding and being polite. But all it takes is seeing him again to bring back those old feelings.

Sometimes first loves are the truest.

It was meant to be a soft kiss. A chaste one, even.

The minute my lips touched his, however, everything changed. Callused hands grabbed the sides of my face and my mouth opened on a gasp. His tongue swept inside, taking me over. Holy hell. Shoes and purse hit the floor, forgotten. Nothing about this kiss was slow or easy. The man devoured me. Every ounce of emotion poured into that kiss, all of the anger and frustration between us. His tongue was teasing and tasting, driving me wild. Then he drew back to suck and nip at my bottom lip. One hand slid around the back of my neck, the other over my hip to grab at my ass. His hold was firm, a little rough even. He treated my body like it belonged to him and I wasn’t gentle either.

Apparently experience mattered. Because all I could do was try and keep up.

I held on tight to his open shirt, straining against him, trying to get closer. I’d have crawled inside the man if I could. Turned out that under certain circumstances, the taste of scotch worked for me in a big way. Against my hip, his cock hardened, digging into me. And oh my God, I’d done that to him. Me. How amazing! Meanwhile, my body felt liquid, core aching and empty. I needed him inside of me and it seemed like I’d already been waiting forever.

“Pete. Please.”

“Fuck,” he muttered, breath hot against my ear.

I fumbled at the remaining buttons on his shirt. My damn fingers didn’t seem to be working. Easier to just push the whole thing upward. Luckily, the man decided to help, tearing the shirt off over his head. More skin was good. And he was so hot and smooth, a thrill to the touch. The solid flesh of his pecs and the flat plane of his stomach.

He tore at the zipper on the back of my dress, dragging fabric down over my shoulders. A growl came from the back of his throat, a noise of frustration, impatience. I’m reasonably certain I heard the silk rip. I didn’t care. His hands and mouth seemed to cover every bit of skin revealed, touching and tasting me everywhere. The dress got stuck on my hips. Out of the way enough for now.

He didn’t even bother undoing my bra, simply peeling down one of the lace cups to free my flesh. My breast filled his hot palm as it took the weight. Fingers plumped me, his thumb flicking over my hard nipple. The sting of pain followed by the heat of his kiss made my head spin and my body ache. There was no room for thought as he fed me deep, wet kisses. Slowly, he took us to the floor. No time for anything else. Just the urgent need to have him inside me.

The hardness of the polished wood was cool against my back. My legs were spread, his body between them. And with his broad chest above me, his weight taken on one arm, he was all I could see. I swear even the insides of my thighs were wet, I was so ready. It would have been embarrassing with anybody else. But this man, he had to know, he had to understand. It had always been him.

“Pete, I need—”

“I know,” he said, voice harsh and low.

He reached out, taking hold of my hand. Our fingers curled around each other out of pure instinct. It was like drawing lines in the sand by the shoreline; waves just kept washing them away. Only my messy heart couldn’t take any more hits.

There are several different tropes to be found in this story – forbidden romance, May/December romance, second chance romance, and even a bit of enemies to lovers! While I still have a hard time finding the beginning of Peter and Adele’s friendship to be believable, I can’t deny that I got totally lost in their story. I loved Adele but disliked more than liked the character of Peter, and yet I still hoped that the two would somehow end up together.

Adele finds herself in a most uncomfortable situation. Her father sent her away when she was eighteen. She got caught with her top off while in the company of one of her father’s employees, Peter, who happened to be fifteen years older than her. Peter ended up getting punched in the face but Adele was able to smooth things over between the two men when she admitted that she had been coming on to Peter and he was an innocent victim. That day she lost her best friend and was sent packing to her mom. Adele met Peter when she was sixteen and while it seemed that he thought of her as a kid sister, she had developed a huge crush on him. They spent a lot of time together and he would even bring her on some of his dates. Peter and Adele shared many meaningful conversations about his family and his strained relationship with his father, but he never would let a woman that he dated get that close to him. It pretty much appeared that he had deep feelings for Adele and that’s why she came on to him.

Now, eight years later, Adele returns to her Father’s home because he’s about to get married, but since there isn’t any room in his house, she is staying in Peter’s guest room. This is the last place she wants to be. They haven’t spoken in all the years she has been gone and when she left their friendship had been ruined. From the moment they see each other again, Peter is sullen, moody, and rude. He’s still holding on to the anger over what happened when she was eighteen. I think back then, he was into Adele but couldn’t act on his feelings because of her age and that her father was his boss, and when he sees that she’s grown into a beautiful woman at twenty-five, he’s even more attracted to her. But Adele is still off limits because he’s now business partners with her father.

Peter runs hot and cold for most of the story but things eventually heat up between the two. He’s never been able to have a committed relationship with a woman, and in the eight years that she’s been away, Adele has never had a relationship last for more than a few weeks. Is Adele going to be the woman who wins Peter’s heart? Or will they end up being just a summer fling?

“Did you enjoy the wedding?” he asked.

“W-what?”

The man stood much closer than necessary. “The wedding. It was nice, right?”

“Sure.”

Faint strains of music carried from across the road. It seemed worlds away. He downed a mouthful of scotch, gaze never leaving my face. All I could smell was the single malt, his cologne, and the slight scent of salt on his skin. After all, it’d been a hot night and he’d been dancing in the suit. He wasn’t happy; I knew the signs well enough. The tension in his jawline and the look in his eyes. All heated and intense.

“So you’ve been sitting in the dark, drinking and brooding, huh?” I asked. “That sounds constructive.”

“What did Leona have to say?”

I laughed. “Oh, hell no. I’m not getting caught in the middle of you two again. Why don’t you try settling your issues like normal people and actually talk to one another?”

“You have such a clever mouth, Adele.” He cocked his head. “Always got an answer, don’t you?”

“Enjoy your scotch, Pete.” I turned away. “I’m going to bed.”

“What’s the rush?” Strong fingers wrapped around my arm, not gripping me hard, just enough to hold me in place.

“I’ve spent enough time tonight in the company of a drunken asshole, thank you.” I smiled.

His return smile was lopsided. “You’re angry.”

“I’m tired.”

“You’re angry and tired. Me too,” he said. “Less so on the tired, though. Actually, I’m wide the fuck awake.”

“Good for you.”

He finished off his drink, then reached past me, setting the empty glass on the kitchen counter. “Keep me company.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Why not?” he asked, expression full of false interest. “Thought you’d love the chance to tell me off some more.”

I looked away. “We’re done here.”

“No, we’re not.”

“Yes, we are.” I pulled my arm out of his grasp. “We’re finished, Pete. Our friendship or whatever the hell it is these days . . . It’s over, kaput, the end. Took me seven years, but tonight I finally wised up.”

“That so?”

“Yep,” I said. “I refuse to keep feeling this way about you. It’s such a stupid waste.”

His gaze narrowed.

“You know, I even have a plan.”

“What might that be?”

“In the morning, I’m going to go home and fuck every available man I meet until one of them does it for me.” My smile felt jagged and horrible. It couldn’t have been pretty so see. “And then I won’t think about you anymore.”

His fingers curled into tight fists. Nice to know I wasn’t the only one affected. I put my hand on his chest, getting up in his face. Two could play the invading-personal-space game, for fun and intimidation. As if I would back down.

“You were going to give it up to Duncan Dickerson?” he sneered. “Are you serious?”

I halted, staring at him. This was not good. “How do you know about that?”

“Anders overheard you and Hang talking.”

“Bastard.”

“Well?” he demanded, acting all authoritarian. Idiot.

“To be fair, I didn’t know his last name was Dickerson,” I said. “That’s unfortunate. Though, I wasn’t actually planning on marrying him, so . . .”

“Not funny.”

I shrugged.

“You barely know the guy.”

“Um, yeah. None of your concern. We’re not talking about this.” How mortifying! My face burned bright. People should just gather around and cook s’mores. “I appreciate that we’re friends. You mean a lot to me. But this is going to have to fall under definitely none of your damn business, so go away please.”

“We’re talking about it.” He advanced a step.

“No we are not.” And I retreated.

“You were going to let a complete stranger touch you.” Advance.

Retreat. “People do it all the time. You do it all the time.”

“But you don’t,” he said, taking the final step, backing me up against the side of his car and getting all in my face. “Edie, this is your first time we’re talking about. Isn’t it?”

“Yes, and it’s going to be messy and painful and probably horribly embarrassing and I just want it over and done with.” I tried to meet his eyes but failed, settling for a spot on his right shoulder. “You’re not a girl; you wouldn’t understand. Also, last time I checked, you’re not the gatekeeper of my hymen, John Cole. So back the fuck off.”

He said nothing.

Deep, calming breaths. “Look, someday I’ll meet someone I really like and we’ll have a deep and meaningful relationship and go at it like bunnies. But I don’t want to be the dumb virgin in that scenario.”

He slowly shook his head.

“Also, I do not want to die a virgin.”

“What? What the hell are you talking about?”

“Hey, you and I both know death can occur at any time.”

“This is crazy.”

“I’m seeing a therapist!” I told his shoulder. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a little bit messed up these days. It’s hard for me to trust people. That’s not going to change anytime soon.”

He screwed up his face at me. “Wha—”

“I’m just trying to be practical.”

“Well, you’re being ridiculous. None of this makes sense.”

“It does to me.”

Again, he said nothing.

In fact, he said nothing for so long that I finally looked him in the eye. The anger had left him, replaced by an emotion I didn’t recognize. Worst of all, he still smelled like summer. A little sweat and the open night air, everything I loved. Liked. I meant liked.

“What?” I said, finally.

He let loose a breath. “I’ll do it.”

*****Mel’s Review*****

4.5 Stars!

Edith Millen aka Edie is a 17 yr. old senior in high school living in Northern California in a town called Auburn. She attends a private school & has plans to go to Berkeley for college. One evening life as she knows it is forever altered when a routine stop at the local convenience store ends with her being held hostage at gun point by the town meth-head. Nearly dying changed her. The once good girl who put up with being bullied & was happy to just blend in now has no tolerance for jerks. Done with the snotty kids at her school Evie decides she wants to transfer to the local public high school to finish out the year. Being curvy & not popular, Evie’s never really fit in anywhere. Now she doesn’t care what people think of her.

On Edie’s first day at her new school she crosses paths with the boy who risked his life to save her. Her fellow hostage & hero John Cole. He was a complete stranger but she still felt an odd connection to him. They had both been through something awful & were trying to deal. While Edie was finally spreading her wings, John was trying to settle down a bit. He had a bad boy, troublemaker reputation as the ex-drug dealer. After his near death experience he was trying to get his life together & focus on his future.

Edie & John are drawn to one another and share a bond as survivors. They begin spending time together & realize they are both struggling with nightmares. Edie realizes John is the only one she can talk to about that night. He understood her because he lived through it too. Being around him is easy & lately he’s the only thing keeping her sane these days. They become best friends. Soon Edie develops a major crush on her gorgeous friend and has intense feelings for him. When she’s with John she’s happy.

-He was beautiful.

-Not once in my entire life had I ever been so curious about someone.

-“I never knew a girl I wanted to look after before.”

Edie wants to live life to the fullest with no regrets. There are so many firsts she’s yet to experience. When John helps her with one of those firsts things get complicated between them. She tries to keep him in the friend zone, but can’t quit replaying his lips on hers. She wants them to be more, but isn’t sure what she means to him.

John thinks he’s bad for Edie. He doesn’t want to bring her down, but real feelings are growing. Soon he’s consumed with thoughts of Edie, but when danger finds them again can they survive twice?

I really loved this book! It had a YA feel to it, & was something new from this author. I was sucked in & hooked from the beginning of this book. It has action, a hot, swoony, bad boy, and lots of emotion. It was a fabulous read!

-I wanted it all. Every part of him.

-Kissing John was everything.

-He kissed me slow and sweet. It seemed endless, as necessary to life as breathing.

-Touching him just about topped my list of favorite things to do.

-All of me wanted him, my heart and my head and all of the rest. Without a doubt, he made life better.

Unwilling to put up with the snobbery and bullying at her private school, she enrolls at the local public high school, crossing paths with John. The boy who risked his life to save hers.

While Edie’s beginning to run wild, however, John’s just starting to settle down. After years of partying and dealing drugs with his older brother, he’s going straight—getting to class on time, and thinking about the future.

An unlikely bond grows between the two as John keeps Edie out of trouble and helps her broaden her horizons. But when he helps her out with another first—losing her virginity—their friendship gets complicated.

Meanwhile, Edie and John are pulled back into the dangerous world they narrowly escaped. They were lucky to survive the first time, but this time they have more to lose—each other.
