REVIEW – LEO (Preston Brothers, #3) by Jay McLean

SYNOPSIS

One single summer changed them forever, and one moment of devastating silence destroyed it all.

Growing up with six siblings, Leo Preston has always struggled to find his voice.
While his brothers are loud, greedy, and somewhat obnoxious, Leo is forever the quiet one.
The thinker.
The listener.
He watches his life pass by as an outsider in his own world, absent and alone.
Lost.
Until he finds her.

For Leo, Mia Kovács is like a prize, a gift wrapped in passion and devotion.
And she’s his—his very own secret he doesn’t have to share.
Together, they can overcome anything…
heartache and destruction, guilt and regret.

Mia gives Leo everything he didn’t know he needed,
including her fragile heart.
The only thing she doesn’t give him…
are secrets of her own.

I reach up, swipe my thumbs across her cheeks, expose my flesh to her liquid agony. My eyes search hers, and I wish I could sink in her tears until there was nothing but her pain in my lungs. I would drown in her heartache.

If you’ve read any of Jay McLean’s previous books, then you know your heart and mind are about to be put through so much gut-wrenching torment but her stories are beyond phenomenal and so you just keep coming back for more torture. None of her characters ever have a straight and easy path to their happily ever after, and that certainly wasn’t the case for Leo and Mia. Their love story will be filled with about a decade’s worth of heartbreak and unbearable angst. I loved every minute of reading this one. Leo surprised me. Who knew the quiet Preston brother would become the biggest swoon-worthy Hero?!

Leo has always been the quiet and introverted Preston sibling, but you learn in his story that he does not waste words. When he does speak, the most beautiful heart-wrenching words come out of his mouth. When Leo gives his heart to a girl…it’s the forever kind of love. The moment he laid eyes on Mia at the tender age of thirteen, Leo was a goner. It takes him a full year to get the courage to even speak to her and when he does, the two form a fast friendship and create sweet memories that will carry them through some dark times.

Mia is a shy and insecure young girl. Both of her parents abandoned her and she’s only ever known what it feels to be loved by her grandfather and her childhood best friend. She’s been ridiculed for years over her looks and her weight. When gorgeous Leo Preston starts spending time with her and makes his feelings for her known, she can hardly believe that this is really happening to her. Just when it looks like her life is taking the turn for the better, it all falls apart, and it’s Leo’s silence that speaks volumes in Mia’s mind. His silence will cause him to lose the girl.

Years go by and somehow fate has brought these two back together, but Mia hasn’t forgotten what happened in the past and she’s not so eager to give Leo another chance to rip her heart apart. So much heartbreaking angst transpires between these two. Ultimately a secret that Mia’s been keeping will have the power to tear these two apart forever or will destroy the Preston family.

This was a truly epic story and Leo is now my favorite Preston brother!

REVIEW – FLOCK (The Ravenhood Duet, #1) by Kate Stewart

SYNOPSIS

Can you keep a secret?

I grew up sick.⁣

Let me clarify.⁣

I grew up believing that real love stories include a martyr or demand great sacrifice to be worthy.⁣

Because of that, I believed it, because I made myself believe it, and I bred the most masochistic of romantic hearts, which resulted in my illness.⁣

When I lived this story, my own twisted fairy tale, it was unbeknownst to me at the time because I was young and naïve. I gave into temptation and fed the beating beast, which grew thirstier with every slash, every strike, every blow.⁣

Triple Falls wasn’t at all what it seemed, nor were the men that swept me under their wing. But in order to keep them, I had to be in on their secrets.⁣

Secrets that cost us everything to keep.⁣

That’s the novelty of fiction versus reality. You can’t re-live your own love story, because by the time you’ve realized you’re living it, it’s over. At least that was the case for me and the men I trusted my foolish heart to.⁣

Looking back, I’m convinced I willed my story into existence due to my illness.⁣

And all were punished.

Even though I vowed to be different from my mother in the way I live my life, we have the same disease. We crave the all-consuming soul-stealing, drama-filled romances that are destined to end badly. I inherited my heart from her, and it’s relentless.

My mind is completely blown away by what I’ve just finished reading. ”FLOCK” is a decadently steamy summer sizzler!! It messed with my heart and my head! I’m left feeling bewildered and DYING to get to the truth just as Cecilia, the heroine is. Once again, I fell in love with the beautifully written words of the incomparable Kate Stewart. I bow down to this gifted author!

Cecelia Horner is a nineteen-year-old girl who thinks she is going to spend an uneventful year living with her estranged father before heading off to college. Little does she know that she will meet a group of ridiculously gorgeous bad boys who will seduce her into their world of intrigue and danger. Cecelia will experience things almost every woman fantasizes about but never gives a voice to, all the while knowing she is putting her fragile heart in harm’s way.

I had such a hard time putting this one down and I’m dying to pick up the second book after being smacked in the face with the craziest of cliffhanger endings!! Luckily, ”EXODUS” is live on Amazon now! Make sure you set some time up to indulge in this duet. You are going to find it very hard to tear yourself away from it!

REVIEW – DEAD PRETTY by Samantha Towle

SYNOPSIS

I’d once believed that nothing would equal the pain of losing my parents.
I was wrong.
I had barely even begun to process their deaths when it started.
The love notes, flowers, gifts … all anonymously left on my porch.
Then, I opened my door to a dead bird.
At first, I thought it had died naturally.
I knew that wasn’t the case when I found my neighbor’s cat the next day.
Then, the murders started.
The victims … women who looked eerily similar to me.
I had a stalker. A murderous one.
And I had no clue who he was.
He never showed me his face.
Not even when he carved his final message into me.
I survived that night. But my life was over. It had ended the moment Tobias Ripley’s infatuation with me began.
So, I changed my name and moved away.
Now, I live a life of solitude. I don’t make connections with anyone.
Until Jack Canti walks into my life with his sharp eyes and easy smiles.
Only Jack isn’t the man he says he is.
And when the murders start again, I’m left wondering if it’s a copycat.
Or worse …
What if Tobias wasn’t the real killer after all … and the murderer has been right here with me all along?

REVIEW – THE CHANGE UP by Meghan Quinn

SYNOPSIS

BREAKING NEWS: The Bad Boy of Baseball, Maddox Paige, is totally and utterly whipped.

Okay, that might not be the headlines in the newspaper this morning, but it’s the reality of my current situation.

It all started a month ago when I received a call from my best friend, Kinsley. She got a new job in Chicago and needed a place to stay. I’ve known the girl since I was five, what harm would it be to have her stay at my place for a while?

Ha! Total disaster.

Now instead of going out every night with my teammates, I’m couch surfing and sketching endless photos of my best friend . . . but that’s the least of my concerns.

The disaster, you ask? I’m rapidly falling head over cleats in love with my best friend, my roommate, and my number one fan.

And she has no idea . . .

She’s my person.
My everything.

My heart and soul.
And I will do just about anything to keep her as mine…anything.

Maddox Paige is the notorious bad boy pitcher of the Chicago Rebels. We only started to get a glimpse into this tender soul in the previous book, ”The Trade”. Maddox grew up in a toxic environment, thanks to his abusive alcoholic father. Having endured his father’s rage for so many years has left an imprint on him. It’s why Maddox has such a short fuse and is often the first to be throwing fists during a brawl on the playing field. He keeps his personal life private and only a few people know that a true artist and gentle soul lay hidden beneath the rough & tatted exterior. One of those people, is his best friend from childhood, Kinsley. She has been there for him through thick and thin. Has always provided a safe haven for Maddox when he needed an escape from his tyrannical father. It’s been years since he left their hometown and made a name for himself in the major leagues, but through it all, they’ve managed to hold on to their strong connection.

Maddox invites Kinsley to move in with him when she lands her dream job working for an animal shelter in Chicago. He never knew that having Kinsley in his home would flip his world on its axis. She’s an unstoppable force of nature, but Maddox, while utterly clueless to his emotions, is completely enamored with her, and would do anything to make her happy. It seems these best-friends are both unaware of how the other feels, but they also fear the possibility of losing their friendship if they attempt to reveal what’s really in their hearts.

Maddox and Kinsley will eventually give in to their attraction and these two have the spiciest sexy scenes out of all the couples in this series. I loved their easy connection and found the angsty moments completely unbearable. Who knew Maddox would end up being a true swoon-worthy Hero??!!

EXCERPT REVEAL – THE DARE (Briar U, #4) by Elle Kennedy

THE DARE

Get ready for another binge-worthy romance from New York Times bestselling author Elle Kennedy!

College was supposed to be my chance to get over my ugly-duckling complex and spread my wings. Instead, I wound up in a sorority full of mean girls. I already have a hard time fitting in, so when my Kappa Chi sisters issue the challenge, I can’t say no.

The dare: seduce the hottest new hockey player in the junior class.

Conor Edwards is a regular at Greek Row parties…and in Greek Row sorority beds. He’s the one you fall for before you learn that guys like him don’t give girls like me a second glance. Except Mr. Popular throws me for a loop—rather than laughing in my face, he does me a solid by letting me take him upstairs to pretend we’re getting busy.

Even crazier, now he wants to keep pretending. Turns out Conor loves games, and he thinks it’s fun to pull the wool over my frenemies’ eyes.

But resisting his easy charm and surfer-boy hotness is darn near impossible. Though I’m realizing there’s much more to Conor’s story than his fan club can see.

And the longer this silly ruse goes on, the greater the danger of it all blowing up in my face.

EXCERPT

“Thank you,” she breathes the moment we’re alone.

“No problem. Mind if I make myself comfortable?”

“Um, yeah. I mean, no. I don’t mind. Sit if you want. Or—wow, okay, you’re lying down.”

I grin at her visible nervousness. It’s cute. While I stretch out my six-foot-two frame amid the stuffed animals and decorative pillows on the bed, she remains the startled rabbit plastered against the door and breathing heavily.

“Gotta be honest,” I tell her, entwining my hands behind my head, “I’ve never seen a girl so unhappy to be locked in a bedroom with me.”

This has the desired effect of loosening her shoulders and even eliciting a shy smile. “I have no doubt.”

“I’m Conor, by the way.”

She rolls her eyes. “Yeah, I know.”

“What’s the eyeroll for?” I ask, playing wounded.

“No, sorry, I didn’t mean anything by it. Just, I know who you are. You’re, like, campus famous.”

The more I watch her, hands braced at her sides against the door, one knee bent, dirty-blonde hair a little messy and draped over one shoulder, I can’t help picturing myself holding her arms above her head while I explore her body with my mouth. She’s got very kissable skin.

“Taylor Marsh,” she blurts out, and I realize I don’t know how long we were silent until then.

I scoot to the far side of the bed and put a pillow beside me as a divider. “Come on. If we’re going to be in here awhile, let’s at least make friends.”

Taylor laughs out a breath and with it she releases a bit more tension. She’s got a nice smile. Bright, warm. It takes a bit more coaxing, however, to get her on the bed.

“This isn’t like a move,” she tells me, lining up stuffed animal guards to patrol the pillow wall between us. “I’m not some sort of weirdo who tricks men into getting in bed with her and then mauls them.”

“Sure.” I nod with mock seriousness. “But a little mauling would be okay.”

REVIEW – THOROUGHLY WHIPPED by Tillie Cole

SYNOPSIS

I, Faith Parisi, love my life. I have the best job—resident sex-advice diva for Visage magazine—I have the best friends, and I live in the best city in the world. Things are pretty damn fabulous. That is, until Henry “Harry” Sinclair III comes crashing back into my world like a bad case of herpes.

I hate the way Harry’s lip curls in contempt whenever he sees me. I hate his bright blue eyes and those inexplicably offensive dimples. I hate his stuffy English accent and the stick that’s permanently jammed up his aristocratic ass. More than anything, I hate that he’s now my boss.

But my professional prospects start to look up when a chance at writing Visage’s big summer feature falls into my lap. Success won’t be easy. I’ll need to let go of all my inhibitions—not that I have that many of those—and jump, stiletto heels first, into a hedonistic new world. An exclusive, secretive world, filled with leather, latex, and Manhattan’s elite.

Pulling this off will take every ounce of daring I have, and every ounce of focus. I can’t afford to get distracted by anything, least of all my new boss, his arrogant mouth, or the way the ice between us seems to be slowly melting away…

Tillie Cole has always been one of my all-time favorite authors. Her stories have either been dark or incredibly angsty. This is the first time she’s delved into the Romantic Comedy genre and I think she nailed it 100%!! I laughed out loud so much while reading this book! From beginning to end, I flat out ADORED Faith and Harry’s scorching hot and insanely hilarious enemies-to-lovers romance. ”THOROUGHLY WHIPPED” was a cross between ”Fifty Shades of Grey”, “Beautiful Bastard”, and “The Unidentified Red Head”. Did you ever enjoy reading a book so much that you wished more than anything that you could live the life of the Heroine in the story? I wanted to be Faith Parisi and as I got closer to the end, I wished that I could spend more time in her world with Harry Sinclair.

Faith is the type of Heroine I always love to read about. She’s ridiculously funny, curses like a truck driver, a total klutz, and forever finding herself in the most embarrassing circumstances. There isn’t anything I didn’t love about her. Harry is a beautiful and pompous British bastard. He’s standoffish and a total snob, but you can tell he’s a complex character with many layers. The anticipation of getting to know this mysterious man made for numerous hours of thrilling reading.

I normally start my reviews with a favorite quote, and I did have quite a few to choose from. I chose not to in order to avoid possibly revealing any spoilers. I had such a good time reading this book and I hope that you all do as well. Tillie, if you read this review—please, please, please, don’t let this be your last romantic comedy. You have such a gift to be able to write so many different types of stories. I’d also love it if this wasn’t the last we’ve heard from Faith and Harry.

*****Dee’s Review*****

Five Stars*****

Fortuity is truly the perfect weekend read. A story so beautifully written and so enjoyable that I can see myself reaching for it time, and time again in the future.

Gracelyn Glock is a forty-year-old woman that has experienced real loss in her life. The latest is losing her brother and sister-in-law in an accident and now she’s become the legal guardian for her ten-year-old nephew. In an effort to keep things as normal as possible for the boy she moves to a new state and is completely rearranging her life.

They move into an apartment on the beach where Gracelyn and Gabe will meet all their new charming neighbors. The next-door neighbor is the very handsome Nathaniel Hunt and his super cute, and smart ten-year-old daughter Morgan.

The four of them form an instant bond. But as each day goes by Gracelyn and Nate start a beautiful and honest romance that will change their lives forever.

Nate lost his wife when she gave birth to his daughter Morgan, and when his baby girl turned two Nate decided he wanted to give her the world, so they began traveling to many different countries for eight years, experiencing all the different cultures. Now it’s time to go home for Nate and Morgan but before they settle down they are in California and that’s where they will find a very big piece of their heart with Gracelyn and Gabe.

This story has the most amazing characters. We first meet Nathaniel in the “Transcend” books and I’m so happy that Jewel gave him his own story with the most beautiful ending. Just like the other books, this one is simply Transcendent, and I promise you that after you read it you will always remember it and forever love it.

I had no idea we were coming to San Diego so this woman could stitch up every single one of my wounds, kiss every scar, and remind my heart that it has an infinite capacity to love.

FINALLY, we get a happy ending for one of Jewel E. Ann’s most beloved Heroes—Nathaniel Hunt. If you’ve read the first two books in the ”Transcend” series then you know and love this beautiful character. If you haven’t read them, now is a good time to get to this EPIC story. I have deep love and admiration for Jewel’s writing and am not exaggerating when I say that I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve when she releases a new book. ”FORTUITY” was a book that HAD to be written! Nate has suffered more than his share of devastating loss. In this last installment of the series we learn that it’s never too late to find true love.

I love it when authors take a chance and write about romances between characters over the age of forty. Nate and Gracelyn’s journey is a slow burn. I was beginning to think that their story would be angst-free and a steady road to an HEA but get ready to have your hearts and minds put through the wringer through the last 35-40 % of the story. They’re in what seems to be an impossible situation that has no room for compromises. It’s torture but when you get to the end, you’ll hopefully love this book as much as I do.

REVIEW – DIRTY CHARMER by Emma Chase

SYNOPSIS

Abigail Haddock is stunning, sensible, and some would say . . . stuffy. But it’s not really her fault. She was raised in one of Wessco’s oldest, most affluent, aristocratic families—“stuffy” is their middle name. So is successful. Abby’s working overtime to distinguish herself as a top-notch physician, just as her family legacy demands.

She doesn’t have time for nonsense.

Tommy Sullivan’s all about nonsense.

Sure, he’s an elite bodyguard with lethal skills and co-owner of the renowned, S&S Securities Firm—protector of the wealthy and titled. But he’s also rowdy, fun and thoroughly irresistible.

Tommy knows how to have a good time, and he’s never seen someone more in need of a good time than Abby. The lass needs long, wet, filthy kisses—STAT—and he’s just the man for the job.

It doesn’t take long for a wildly sexy, sinfully satisfying, no-strings attached arrangement to turn into something more. Something sweet and addictive and real. But Tommy and Abby are too royally stubborn to admit it.

Opposites attract, everyone knows that. But can they last—can they love…for forever?

Fans of the ”Royally” series, get ready to fall in love with the latest installment, ”DIRTY CHARMER” and its swoon-worthy Hero–Tommy Sullivan. Tommy is the gorgeous and devilishly charming best-friend and business partner of Logan St. James. He’s a ladies’ man with a heart of gold, who lives his life in the moment. Tommy has plenty of admirers but there hasn’t been a woman that’s been able to hold his attention until he meets the beautiful but reserved Abby Haddock. Abby comes from royal lineage and has put all of her time and energy into her career as a cardiac surgeon. She hasn’t felt the need to put any effort into building a life outside of being the top doctor in her field until the day Abby’s advised that she’s too singular in her aspirations and that she needs to open herself up to other endeavors. Abby knows just the man who can spice things up for her.

Tommy and Abby wind up in a mutually agreed upon ”no strings attached” arrangement. They both get swept up in a hot and steamy affair in which deep feelings develop between them. Will Abby be able to go back to her monochromatic life as a surgeon once the affair is over, or will she realize before it’s too late that she needs the vibrance that being with Tommy has brought into her world.

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Provided by Author}

I didn’t understand what pulled us together. I didn’t know what made Jane Doe the only woman who satisfied my heart, body, and soul. I didn’t need to know.

BLACK TANGLED HEART is an angst-filled, wildly steamy “second-chance/in-love-with-the-best friend’s older brother”, contemporary romance. The pace of the plot progression was steady. It held my attention throughout. There is a secondary character that proves to be a consistent villain, it was easy to predict that she would cause a major rift between the Hero and Heroine. Jamie McKenna had the potential to be a super swoon-worthy Hero during the first half of the book when he and Jane were teenagers, but tragic life events, deception, and lies turn the once loving and kind-hearted boy into a cold, cruel and bitter man. His inability to see that Jane was still the same girl he fell in love with all those years ago left me feeling a little disappointed in that character. Jane was a very relatable and endearing Heroine. She experienced true loss and overcame many adversities. She became a woman with a fulfilling career and great friendships, but never forgot the people who were there for her when she was a young girl. She remained loyal to them and strived to right the wrongs that were inflicted upon those she loved.

Towards the end, certain characters find themselves in precarious situations that ramps up the action and is sure to induce some accelerated heart rates! The suspense will have you hanging on by a thread.

Here are my overall ratings:
Hero: 4
Heroine: 4.5
Plot: 4
Angst: 4
Steam: 5
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 4.5
