REVIEW – I PICK YOU by Jettie Woodruff

Cover

SYNOPSIS:

When I left Nashville, Tennessee, I knew deep in my heart I wouldn’t be back. I knew I would never be heard on every country music station around the world, and I would never step foot on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Cold hard guilt and responsibilities that I didn’t want forced me on a different path.
Me being responsible for an eighteen-month-old was a horrible idea. Me being a second grade teacher in a catholic school was plain ludicrous.
Life sucked, love hurt, and I didn’t know who to pick.

Hey, can I tell you something?

Is no secret that I was a big fan of The Twin Trio series, and when the character of Brantley was introduced in the last book I was immediately curious by the new teacher hottie that had moved into the cul de sac where Pax and Gabriella live.

Leave it to Jettie Woodruff to bring us something new and unexpected. Never a dull moment when reading one of her novels.

I Pick You was fantastic!!!! This novel can be read as a standalone. You do not have to have read The Twin Trio series to fully enjoy this book.

Teaser 2

Brantley was living his dream by performing his favorite country songs on the busy streets of Nashville. The hot rising star had a different girl every night, and even though he’s not rich, he makes a pretty decent living by singing and playing his guitar at a different place every night.

One crazy night, lust took over the reigns of his actions and he forgot about protection. 9 months later he learned he was having a baby with the girl he had only spent one weekend with. Immature and not ready to face the consequences of his actions, Brantley decides to pay for child support, but decides not to be part of his child’s life.

Kit is the mother of his baby and she’s tried in the past to get Brantley involved in the life of their daughter Bay without avail. It’s not until a big career opportunity for her comes knocking on her door that she finds herself having to force Brantley to take responsibility for his daughter.

Kit leaves Brantley with their two-year-old baby Bay, and a book full of how to’s. Her heart feels heavy but she trusts that baby Bay will make her daddy fall in love with her and help him mature and become the dad she knows he can be.

New home, new job and a being a new father, Brantley feels totally out of place but little does he know that his relationship with Kit will be renewed and he will also meet a Florida cowgirl that together with his daughter Bay, these women will turn his life inside out.

18236628._SY540_

Brantley never knew what love was, and now he has so much of it that he doesn’t know how to deal with it all. He feels closer to Kit now that she’s so far away and he has so much in common with Rydell, the beautiful teacher that works across the hall from him.

Brantley has a lot of growing up to do and, unfortunately, it’s not until he almost loses it all that he finally finds himself.

I’m not going to tell you that Brantley is a super swoony hero, who you’ll fall in love with immediately. He’s a little bit of an anti-hero. He’s hot, obnoxiously cocky and very selfish. So it was a real beauty for me to see how the love for his daughter changed him. Brantley was as delicious as he was frustrating at times but his interactions with Bay, simply melted my heart and ultimately won me over.

This was a beautiful story about finding love and forgiveness. About growing up and finally finding happiness in an unexpected place. I love the realness in which this author wrote the story, the way she humanized the characters and made me fall in love with them, even when I didn’t agree with their actions, was a wonderful experience. Jettie Woodruff writes the kind of books I want to read and I truly loved this one.

(ARC provided by author)

Brantley Jandt is a 25 yr. old guy whose been following his dream in Nashville for the past 5 years. Music has always been a huge part of his life, and he wants to make it big in Nashville as a country music singer. His dreams of being a superstar are cut short when Kit, the mother of his child contacts him, asking him to care for their 18 month old daughter while she is in Kenya for the next year.

Brantley has never been much of a father to his daughter Bay. He sent his monthly check, but never felt he was really cut out to be a parent. He’s about to be a dad to a little girl he’s only met once. He’s a little panicked at the thought of being responsible for a little person. It’s time to man up, act like an adult & get a real job. Brantley falls back on the teaching degree he never thought he’d use, & sends out resumes. He finds a job in Hudson, Florida, and makes plans to care for his daughter.

Brantley rents a gorgeous house on the beach from his cousin Lane, & starts his new job as a 2nd grade teacher at St. Augustine’s Catholic School. He goes from the single life to living in a cul-de-sac, and being a full time dad. He falls in love with his daughter pretty fast & it melted my heart. He regrets not being with her from the beginning, & quickly becomes attached to her. He just learns as he goes & is a totally swoon worthy, delicious dad! He has a couple love interests in this story & we don’t know if he will end up with a fellow teacher that makes him want more, or if he will work things out with Bay’s mom. I found myself liking both women. Brantley is going through so many changes in his life & realizing he wants more for himself. A family, a place to put down roots, but most of all his daughter Bay. She has become the most important person in his world! I really enjoyed this book & thought it was fantastic! 😀

I knew Emily was dead. But these letters, they were probably the last words she’d committed to paper, and they traced her downfall as she’d come to terms with her own death. I was reliving her last days, and I wanted her story to end differently. I wanted our happily-ever-after.

9 LETTERS TEASER BT

When I heard the buzz about this book, my interest was piqued. I usually stay away from novels written by first-time authors because I just assume the story won’t be anything special, or will read like it was written by an amateur. Let’s face it, there’s a lot of crap books out there. Also, the last time I read a supposed sad story written by a man, I hated it with all of my heart. I’m happy, in this instance, that I took a chance on this book. I really enjoyed it, even though the story was incredibly sad.

9 LETTERS TEASER

Have you read or seen the movie P.S. I Love You? Well, this book right here was like the male version of that movie. In this story, it is the wife that dies way too soon and leaves behind her devastated husband. It’s a year to the day that Luke Cawley’s wife, Emily, passed away from cancer. He has become an empty shell of the man he used to be, after having lost the love of his life, his high-school sweetheart. Luke’s given up on pretty much everything that brought him joy and has become somewhat of a recluse, shutting out all of his friends and family. Then one morning he finds a package on his front porch and the contents turn out to be nine labeled letters from his deceased wife.

9 letters teaser for excerpt reveal

Emily knew Luke so well, that on her death bed she decided to write him a series of letters to help him find his way back to the man he used to be. Each letter either had a task for Luke to complete or a truth to help ease his guilt. He was not allowed to read each subsequent letter until he fulfilled the task requested of him from the previous one. Slowly, Luke realizes that he let his grief take over his life and that he had been making some poor choices.

While trying to complete a task from one of Emily’s letters, he meets a beautiful and sweet woman named Rae. She ends up making him feel something he thought had died along with his wife. But he struggles with guilt where Emily is concerned and at times his temper gets the best of him, which has him acting like an ass on more than one occasion. Will Luke let his bitterness ruin his second chance at happiness or will he find the inner strength and clarity to move on?

This was a very good story by a debut author. One that I was completely engrossed in and that I do highly recommend.

9 LETTERS TEASER

Excerpt

I was about twenty minutes early for my shift, but I got up to the bar, grabbed a rag, started wiping it down, bussing some dishes.

“Damn, Luke,” Jake said, watching me work. “You win the lotto or something? Royals win the pennant last night and I forgot to watch?”

“I’m just in a good mood, that’s all,” I said.

I thought about it a moment longer, decided I should tell him more. Impart some wisdom learned from my not-particularly-advanced years.

“When everything’s dark for so damn long and your eyes get used to it,” I said, “just a little glimmer of sunshine lights up the whole world.”

He nodded, then grabbed a bus bin and headed back into the kitchen.

Warren though, Warren wasn’t impressed. He was sitting by one of the daytime barflies, but he’d stopped talking and was just watching me. I was on thin ice, and I knew it. I couldn’t afford to lose my job. A heartbroken, drunk, angry widower is probably as unemployable as the average ex-con.

I came on at the end of the day shift. Warren liked tending bar during the day, because it meant just shooting the shit with the regulars. That day I had a smile for every customer, sparse words of wisdom like day drunks want to hear. Tending bar wasn’t my dream. But to hell with letting that make me lazy. I kept the place clean, I poured drinks like I cared.

I was getting into the swing of it when happy hour kicked in and a few more people filtered through the door. Couple of middle-aged bikers, a retired couple that parked their RV out front.

The door swung open again, letting in a little bit of that early-evening cold, and I glanced up to see a crowd of three women, with two men. One of the women was a reddish blonde, radiant. Sort of stole the light out of the room. It was Rae. Our eyes met and her smile gave the room back its light.

She’d been in jeans at the shelter, but she was in a blue dress now and she looked damn fine in either. Took my mind right off Maggie, faster than I thought it would be possible. I met her eyes, and she gave out a little gasp and giggle. I was probably smiling in surprise myself.

The crowd came over to the bar. I’d thought the other four were two couples, but I realized pretty quick that the black girl with the afro was dating the quiet white guy in a beard and glasses and tattoos, and that the other guy was trying to impress Rae. He had a John Deere hat, but his clothes were way too clean for me to buy it that he worked on a farm. I hated him, right off. I probably would have hated him if he was the best guy in the world, though. The other girl, she was tall, latina, and for some indiscernible reason was interested in the poser farmer.

Most of the time, I’m awful at reading people. But for some reason, at work I can tell you everything about everyone who walks in the door. About who’s into who, about who had a bad day at work. Who wants to get drunk and miserable, who wants to get drunk and happy, who wants to get drunk and start trouble. Maybe it’s some magic of the job, maybe it’s just how people carry themselves at a bar. Helps with tips, that’s for certain. You wingman right, and the money flows in.

Warren, he likes to upsell them drinks when he’s doing that. Get them excited about the top shelf. Not me.

“Hey, Rae,” I said.

“Luke,” she said.

John Deere looked at me like I was the scum of the earth. And maybe I was, but if I was the scum then he was… I don’t know, something worse than scum. Wannabe scum.

She introduced me to her friends. Nicole had the afro, her boyfriend was Eric. The girl with bad taste was Irina, and John Deere had some name but honestly it went in one ear and out the other. He was John Deere to me. Yeah, maybe I’m an asshole.

“So, how do you know this guy?” Deere asked, tossing me a look that said I clearly wasn’t good enough to be friend with someone like Rae.

“Oh, he came in just the other day. Adopted the sweetest dog, a bloodhound.” She turned to me, flashing that dimple high on her cheek. “How is he? You guys call a truce yet?”

“King’s great,” I said. “I mean, he’s probably at home right now, eating everything I’ve ever owned, but I figure I was due for a purge anyway, right?”

It was a lame attempt at humor, but Rae laughed.

“What can I get you all? Friend of Rae’s is a friend of mine.”

excerpt

He holds my eyes, not letting them wander away from him. “Why have you been avoiding me?”

I wander my room, not sure where to go now that he’s here. I’m not sure where I fit now. I’m not sure where I belong in his life.

“You know why,” I say quietly.

“I want to hear you tell me.”

“Why?”

“So I can change your mind.” His hands slide into his front pockets, and the sunlight catches on his dad’s watch and casts golden beams through the room. It lights up like someone just lit a million candles at once. “I can’t do that unless I know exactly why you don’t want to see me.”

He wants a reason? I’ll give him a whole list of them.

“Because I don’t want to drag you into my mess of a world any more than I already have. Because I don’t want to smear you through the mud on the media’s march to burying me. Because I don’t want to hurt you—again—and because I want to protect you.”

“I can protect myself from them.”

I shake my head and cover my chest with my hand. “To protect you from me.”

Torrin’s jaw hardens. He works it loose the moment after. “I don’t need protection from you.”

“Everyone needs protection from me. There’s something dark in me now, Torrin, and I can’t get it out. It’s growing, spreading, and I don’t want it to infect the people I love.”

He pushes off the closet doors and crosses the room before I know he’s coming. “There is nothing dark in you, Jade. Nothing.” He backs me into the wall and stares at me, unblinking. “There is light and good in you. There always has been. There always will be.”

“That’s gone. He took it from me.”

“No, he didn’t.” Torrin’s hand slams into the wall beside my head. “It’s still there. You had to bury it to keep it safe, but it’s still there. You’ll find it. I know it.”

I want to believe him, but that doesn’t make it true. “You can’t find what isn’t there, Torrin.”

“Dammit, stop talking like that,” he says, his jaw tensing. “It’s there. I know it.”

“I’ve tried. I can’t find it.” Even as I say it, I start to feel different. It’s because of him being so close, saying what he is in the way he is. He’s the tether that keeps me from floating away.

His eyes lower to mine. “I’ll help you find it.”

I feel my heart again. My lungs. Everything else. I feel it waking up. “What makes you so sure you can find it?”

“Because when I look in your eyes, I still see it.” His other hand fits against the wall beside my head. “Because when I’m close to you like this, I can still feel it.” He leans a little closer, and I feel something too. “It’s there, Jade. It’s not gone. He took ten years of your life—ten years.” The corners of his eyes crease as an emotion fires in his eyes. “Don’t hand him the rest of it by believing that kind of shit.”

ONE TO TAKE

By Tia Louise

~ Mariska~

When I open my eyes again the next morning, and I’m alone in bed, I’m pissed. Sitting up, I know what I have to do. I pull my hair around, over my shoulder and weave it into a thick braid then I throw back the covers and stomp over to the window. Still raining.

Going to the closet, I jerk it open, pulling out a bright red floral dress and pulling it over my head not bothering with a bra. It buttons up the front, but I only fasten the middle ones. I’ve had enough of this behavior.

Amy is sitting at the kitchen table when I emerge from the hall. “Hey, Mare! I want you to read my coffee grounds!”

“In a minute,” I grumble, going straight to the door and outside. Light rain gathers in little beads on my hair, making it look like I’m wearing a veil.

Into the barn, I scan the open space looking for Bill. As far as I can tell, the only person in the area with the horses is Stuart, just the man I’m looking for.

He’s in Ranger’s stall, and I go straight to the door, pull the latch, and go inside. He stands up slowly, a confused smile on his face, and it hits me so hard. He’s gorgeous in those loose jeans and that damn grey Henley I stole last year.

“Hey, babe—” but I don’t let him finish. I go straight to him and grab the front of my favorite shirt.

“I’m sick of it!” From the corner of my eye, I see Ranger’s ears lay back, but I don’t care.

Stuart’s brow lowers. “Sick of what?”

“Stop treating me like a fucking China doll!”

“Mariska—”

“No!” I push him, but he doesn’t move. The man is a wall of granite. “Before you knew, before I told you, when I was already twelve weeks pregnant, if I left you in the bed alone one morning… One! You were pissed!”

He’s fighting the urge to grin, but I won’t have it. I push against his arms and grab the front of his shirt, shoving it up his lined torso.

“What are you doing?” He tries to catch my hands, but I push his away.

“You’re going to fuck me right here and now in this stall.”

“What the…” He steps forward, past me to the door of the stall and looks out into the barn. “Where’s Amy?”

“She’s in the house having breakfast with your mom. I don’t know where Bill is.”

“He went into town,” Stuart says quietly before turning to face me.

“Then we’re alone.” My hands are on his waist, but I only get the top button of his jeans open before he catches them.

“Take it easy. We’re not doing this here.”

The tightness in my chest almost makes me scream. I’m breathing fast, and my whole body is on fire with fury and hormones and lust. “Stuart William! You’re the only man I’ve ever slept with!”

“I’m glad to hear it,” he says, that sexy smile returning.

“You taught me how to make love—fierce and rough and demanding. I want you to love me like that now.”

I unfasten the buttons on my dress, allowing the front to fall apart, revealing my bare breasts heaving beneath. His expression darkens, and I see a glimmer of the old Stuart in his eyes.

He reaches out and catches my waist, pulling me hard against his chest. A flash of need spikes in my veins. “Yes,” I whisper. “Like that.”

The muscle in his jaw moves, and he looks away. “I can’t get off thinking I might hurt you.”

“You’ve never hurt me before.” Sliding my hands up his arms, I grip his biceps. “You’re hurting me by holding back.”

Reaching for his hand, I guide it down, pulling my skirt up so he can feel I’m not wearing panties, so he can feel how wet I am. “I want you. The real you.”

“Mariska,” he growls as his fingers curl against my sex.

Putting both hands on his face, I pull him to me and kiss him hard, parting his lips and pushing my tongue inside. At the same time, his fingers plunge into me, and a low moan scrapes from my throat.

I rise on my toes, chasing his lips, and he’s kissing me back with just as much passion, plundering my mouth. When I pull back, I nip his bottom lip with my teeth, and our eyes meet, burning with the fire I’ve been missing so long.

He takes my arm and turns me around, pushing me against the wooden side of the corral.

“Yes,” I gasp, clutching the wooden slats, arching my back as I brace against the wall. Cool air sweeps along my thighs and ass as he sweeps the flowing skirt away.

He studies my body as I hear his zipper lower. One large hand grips my hip, kneading my skin. “So beautiful.” His voice is rough and hungry.

“Please,” I whisper. I’m on fire, and I ache deeply for his rough touch.

At once I feel a stinging SLAP! against the soft skin of my behind followed by another kneading grip. The biting pain only spikes my desire.

“Oh god, yes,” I sigh. My legs tremble. Sparks of pleasure fizz in my veins, and waiting for him is almost painful. I moan as he slides his erection up and down my slick folds until finally, in one hard thrust, we both groan as he plunges inside.

Excerpt

After spending two hours outdoors getting my headshots taken by Finn, I slide into the backseat of the Uber with Finn, grateful to be back inside. He puts an arm around my shoulders and draws me to him. “Cold?”I should pull away. Once I have it, though, his warmth is impossible to reject and feels as necessary as breathing. “A little.”

He squeezes me closer. Moves his hand up and down my bicep. “You’re shivering.”

The driver looks at us in the rearview mirror. “You guys are a cute couple.”

“Thanks,” I say.

Finn arches an eyebrow, pleased—because she thinks we’re together, or because I didn’t correct her? I don’t even want to correct her. I’ve missed the look she’s giving us, the one a woman makes when she’s more envious than jealous. I get it all the time with Nathan. That feeling, coupled with the heater blasting from the front seat, leaves me slightly woozy.

We’re just like actors in a movie, I tell myself. This isn’t real. It doesn’t count. After a few minutes, the urgency to get warm lessens, and the door opens to another less pressing, but still basic need. Because that’s how my arousal feels—essential. The more it’s ignored, the fiercer it grows. I snuggle into his side. All it takes is his hand on my upper thigh to invite an assault of graphic fantasies. Finn shoving me down on the backseat because he can’t control himself anymore. Thrusting his fingers under the hem of my dress to find me ready for him. The lower half of my body aches with sudden demands.

“Some of those photos we just took were for me,” he whispers in my ear. He couldn’t have chosen a worse moment to tease me. My legs are jelly-like. “Does that make you mad?”

I check to see if the driver is paying attention. She must know I’m married. How can something so vital and concrete in my life be hidden? “What if I say yes?” I ask.

“I’ll delete them. If you’re sure it doesn’t . . . turn you on.”

I try not to pant. “Why would it?”

“Imagining me looking at them later.”

I turn my head. Our mouths are a breath apart. One more inch, and they’ll touch. Again. Those lips are the color of sunburnt rock but whisper soft. We’ve done it once. Would one more kiss hurt? I can’t stop the image of him looking at me, my exposed, white throat on his computer, his cock in a firm fist. It should disgust me. It makes my panties damp instead.

“No response necessary,” he says as the car pulls up to the curb. “I can read it on your face.”

It started out like any other morning on the train.

Until I became mesmerized by the guy sitting across the aisle.

He was barking at someone on his phone like he ruled the world.

Who did the stuck-up suit think he was…God?

Actually, he looked like a God. That was about it.

When his stop came, he got up suddenly and left.  So suddenly, he dropped his phone on the way out.

I might have picked it up.

I might have gone through all of his photos and called some of the numbers.

I might have held onto the mystery man’s phone for days—until I finally conjured up the courage to return it.

When I traipsed my ass across town to his fancy company, he refused to see me.

So, I left the phone on the empty desk outside the arrogant jerk’s office.

I might have also left behind a dirty picture on it first though.

I didn’t expect him to text back.

I didn’t expect our exchanges to be hot as hell.

I didn’t expect to fall for him—all before we even met.

The two of us couldn’t have been any more different.

Yet, you know what they say about opposites.

When we finally came face to face, we found out opposites sometimes do more than attract—we consumed each other.

Nothing could have prepared me for the ride he took me on. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for where I’d wind up when the ride was over.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

RELEASE BLITZ – I PICK YOU by Jettie Woodruff

Title: I Pick You
Author: Jettie Woodruff
Release Date: Feb 23, 2016
Find on Goodreads
When I left Nashville, Tennessee, I knew deep in my heart I wouldn’t be back. I knew I would never be heard on every country music station around the world, and I would never step foot on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Cold hard guilt and responsibilities that I didn’t want forced me on a different path.
Me being responsible for an eighteen-month-old was a horrible idea. Me being a second grade teacher in a catholic school was plain ludicrous.
Life sucked, love hurt, and I didn’t know who to pick.
Kit held up the blue book with white stickers, spelling out The Bay Bible. “This book will tell you any and everything you would need to know, right down to a mosquito bite.”
I blew out a puff of air, cocky air. “I’m pretty sure I can handle a mosquito bite. I didn’t need a tab for that one. I’m not stupid, just not made for this daddy stuff.”
“What you put on your mosquito bite isn’t the same as hers. You have to be careful with all those chemicals. A little bit of baking soda and water does the same thing.”
“Oh, okay, yeah, that makes sense,” I admitted while I stepped off my pedestal, accepting defeat, the thought of my grandma using that same home remedy crossing my mind. Nope, didn’t know how to do this, and I didn’t want to. I was doomed, she was doomed, and this was a horrible idea.
“You’re going to be fine.”
That wasn’t what I was worried about. Not fully. “And what about the girl? You’re trusting someone who has never been around little kids. Ever.”
“I’m trusting her with her dad, and stop calling her the girl. Her name is Bay.”
“Yeah, I know. Why you would name a child, Bay is beyond me. Especially when your last name is Berry.”
“Hey, I gave her your name. I could have given her mine.”
“Whatever, it’s still a stupid name. How much time do I have, Kit? I have to pack up this place, get a job and get out of the city.”
Kit frowned while her head did this little jerking thing. Like I had just slapped her across her face. “You’re leaving Nashville?”
“I know you’ve only seen the ceiling of my apartment, but I’m sure you noticed the size? Where’s she going to play? Where is she going to sleep? And, what? Am I just going to make her a bed in my guitar case while I perform on the streets until two in the morning? Of course, I’m leaving Nashville.”
“I remember your apartment, idiot, but where would you go?”
“Idit,” the tiny little voice said from the bed.
Kit laughed and scolded her with a lighthearted tone. “You can’t say that.”
“I don’t know yet. I just sent out a resume right before I called. I’ll let you know when I know.”
“But what kind of job? I mean what can you do besides sing?”
I shook my head a little with that one, deciding not to tell the dumb twit. Not because I wasn’t proud of the degree I had gotten as a backup plan. It was more because she didn’t think I was capable of such an accomplishment. She didn’t know shit about me, and it pissed me off that she was so quick to judge. “Oh, I don’t know, Kit. I bet I could mow lawns, or maybe change some oil or something.”
Kit’s frown never changed and she continued to start each sentence with, but. “But where would you go? I thought you would stay close to your family. You know, so they can help with Bay.”
I did the frowning that time. “See, this is why this is wrong on so many levels. You don’t know me any more than I know you. My family lives in Michigan. Not Nashville. I came here right after high school.
“But I met your sister.”
“Bridgett, yes. She just so happened to be visiting that weekend. She doesn’t live here. She’s a social worker back home. Not here.”
I could almost see the air being exhaled as Kit’s eyebrows sank with both her shoulders. She looked back at Bay, dumping raisins onto the bed, and back to me. “This changes things.”
“It does?” I questioned, wheels spinning like crazy in my head while I tried to contain the excitement.
“Yeah, I mean I was already having an issue with how immature you are, but moving her from place to place with no family. Yeah, I don’t know.”
Normally the immature remark would have pissed me off, but honestly, it was sort of true. Although in my defense, I had nothing to be mature about. It sounds selfish now, but at the time, I didn’t really think about Bay being my responsibility. My duty to my daughter consisted of six hundred dollars set up to automatically deposit into Kit’s bank account on the first day of every month. At least, I wouldn’t have to send that anymore. Surely a baby didn’t cost that much.
“I’m sure we’ll be fine. I’m not going to move her from place to place. Why do you think I need to know how much time I have until you fly halfway across the world?”
“You have no idea how much I want this, Brantley. It took me months to ask you. I wouldn’t even consider it if it wasn’t you.”
I didn’t understand that at all. “Why? I’ve never even been in her life.”
“Because nobody but you will love her like I do.”
I didn’t touch that one either. How could she say that, knowing we didn’t even know each other? “When do you leave?”
“Six weeks,” Kit replied in a faraway tone. Her head turned back to Bay and a smile took over her entire face.
That didn’t give me much time, but it wasn’t like she hadn’t asked six months before. That’s just how long it took for her to talk me into it, begging and pleading until I finally caved. And I still wasn’t one hundred percent convinced. My eyes moved past Kit to Bay, throwing both hands into the air, calling out some incoherent chant, raisins scattered all around her. “I’ve never changed a diaper.”
“She’s doing great on the potty. If you’re lucky, I can have her out of diapers before you get her. There is one thing, Brantley.”
“Here it comes. What?”
“I want her back. You have to sign something promising to give her back. You can see her and get her on weekends, but you can’t keep her. I’m getting her back.”
That wouldn’t be a problem. “Sure, whatever. I’ll call you in a few days.”
“Thank you so much, Brantley.”
“Yeah, yeah. See ya.”
I closed my laptop, seeing my guitar case propped in the corner. My sad guitar. The one that I would retire for an eighteen-month-old. What the hell was I doing?

From New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

Sharing a summer house with a hot-as-hell roommate should be a dream come true, right?

Not when it’s Justin…the only person I’d ever loved…who now hates me.

When my grandmother died and left me half of the house on Aquidneck Island, there was a catch: the other half would go to the boy she helped raise.

The same boy who turned into the teenager whose heart I broke years ago.

The same teenager who’s now a man with a hard body and a hardass personality to match.

I hadn’t seen him in years, and now we’re living together because neither one of us is willing to give up the house.

The worst part? He didn’t come alone.

I’d soon realize there’s a thin line between love and hate. I could see through that smug smile. Beneath it all…the boy is still there. So is our connection.

The problem is…now that I can’t have Justin, I’ve never wanted him more.

Author’s note – RoomHate is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

RoomHate Excerpt

His eyes darted to the side, and he noticed me standing there. We just stared at each other. It was ironic, but the only times I could ever feel the remnants of our old connection were in fleeting moments of silent eye contact. Sometimes moments of silence spoke the loudest.

I left him alone again, making my way back down the hall and into the restaurant to tend to the customers I’d been ignoring.

Things really started to get busy. Without Jade working tonight, we were short-staffed, and I was having a hard time keeping up with the orders. Sandy’s had indoor and outdoor seating. Normally, I would only be working one section, but tonight I was going back and forth between the two.

It was nice out, so I knew they would have Justin performing outside. I kept glancing over to the small stage to see if he was there. It was past eight, and he hadn’t made an appearance yet.

Sometime close to eight-thirty, I was in the middle of serving a large party of ten when I first heard it: the chilling sound of a soulful voice that was not familiar in the least. He gave no introduction. No warning. He just started to sing out the first few words, followed by the strum of his guitar. The song that Justin had chosen to start with was a cover of Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers.

The entire room soon quieted down, and all eyes were on the stunning blond male specimen with the spotlight shining down on him. Despite the fact that I was carrying a large round tray of dirty dishes, I couldn’t move. The vibration of his thick, smoky singing voice had completely paralyzed me, penetrating my body and soul.

Aside from the lone teardrop that fell the night he lost it on me during steak dinner, I hadn’t shed any more tears—until now. It was all too much. Hearing how different his voice sounded, how he’d trained it over the years, was a wake-up call as to how much I had missed. All of the hours of practice that must have gone into honing that beautiful voice, and I wasn’t there for any of it. The guilt, the emotions, the reality of a decade gone…everything started to pummel me at once. Not to mention the song—about a girl leaving. It probably had nothing to do with me, but in my mind, it sure as hell felt like it did.

Amelia Payne is a middle school teacher from Providence, Rhode Island. She is 24 & newly single. Her grandmother passed away a month ago & left her half of her summer house on Aquidneck Island. Amelia heads to the Island she loved as a child to spend the summer there. When she arrives she learns she isn’t the only one that inherited the beach house.

roomhate teaser 5

The house was left 50/50. Half to Amelia, & the other half to a guy who once meant everything to her, Justin Banks. Amelia & Justin grew up together. Her Nana used to watch him while his parents worked & she thought of him like a grandson. They’ve known each other for about 14 yrs., since they were 10 yrs. old. Last time she saw him he was 16. She was hurt with him, and young & immature. She made the decision to leave town & never thought she’d see him again.

Now 9 years later she has to face him & be roommates with the only boy she’d ever truly loved, but he sure doesn’t look like a boy anymore. Justin is now a musician living in New York, & is ALL man! Hot, gorgeous, delicious man!!! The problem is he’s angry with Amelia, & is holding a major grudge & to complicate things even more he isn’t alone when he arrives. I really enjoyed this book! It was extremely hot, full of drama, angst, sexual tension, & plot twists I wasn’t expecting. I really loved both Amelia & Justin & thought this was a great story about 2nd chance romance.

REVIEW – SOULLESS (King, #4) by T.M. Frazier

soulless

SYNOPSIS:

The finale to Bear and Thia’s epic love story.

*****Dee’s Review*****

4 STARS****

(ARC kindly provided by author)

Two words come to mind when trying to describe this book; pleasure and pain. Soulless was an electrifying page turner that will tease every single one of your senses. Do you dare?

18199560._SY540_

Bear committed the ultimate sacrifice in order to save Thia, the one he loves. Everything happened so fast for Thia and Bear in Lawless. One minute they are enjoying the passion of their unconventional relationship and the next, Bear is taken into custody.

Soulless picks up with Bear behind bars and Thia under the protection of Rage; a new character that looks like a prom queen but is deadlier than any contracted assassin out there on the streets. Rage’s specialty is arson. She’s a very skilled assassin who lacks human compassion. A total badass babe!

Bear is ready for war, he wants to fight for his freedom all while keeping Thia safe, but as long as his father is out there he will never be able to breathe easy. With the help of King, he’s ready to take on the deadly mission of killing the president of the Bastards MC.

Blood will be shed and death will run its course before the conclusion of this gritty story can happen…

18199561._SY540_

Everything about Soulless was over the top, and I’m not sure that’s necessarily a bad thing. Yes it was dark and gruesome, and I’ll probably wear a permanent frown on my forehead from cringing so much ( I was in need of some Botox, anyway), but also the love between all these characters was something fierce. The brotherhood between King and Bear, the love Grace had for her boys, and more importantly, the intense and raw love Bear and Thia share. Everything in this book was intense, definitely not for the faint-hearted.

I loved all the excitement and the new characters, but I also enjoyed the familiar dark and gritty plot that I’m used to getting from this author. You have no idea what T.M Frazier has in store for you. Soulless is full of twists and turns, so many secrets are revealed in this second part so make sure to remember to pick up your jaw from the floor when you finish.

Seems like T.M Frazier is getting ready to elevate her stories to a whole new level of awesomeness and bring us, even more, wicked excitements in the near future, and I am definitely ready for more, are you?

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

We started on a broken promise, one never meant to be kept. We ended on the promise of forever.

This series has been a freaking wild roller coaster ride with surprising twists and turns. If you have read T.M. Frazier’s books, you know this story isn’t going to be pretty. It’s going to be raw, gritty, and at times very dark and painful. I knew going into this one that the road to happily ever after for Bear and Thia wasn’t going to be paved with hearts and flowers. These two will go through hell and at times, I wondered if they would make their way out of it alive and with their sanity still intact. Actually, I know Thia and Bear were definitely bat shit crazy because their relationship was far from conventional.

The one thing that remained constant in this story was the deep and passionate love they shared. There wasn’t anything they wouldn’t do for each other. They also couldn’t seem to go without sex for more than a couple of minutes. I wondered how Bear’s penis hadn’t fallen off with the amount of times he had to have Thia. They didn’t even care where the hell they were or if they had an audience. One particular moment had me thinking they were definitely just a tab bit demented. But I can’t deny that I was fanning myself quite a bit.

There’s definitely a ton of action and several WTF moments in this one. I mean I really don’t think that you will see it coming. I sure as hell didn’t. I do have a feeling, by the way the story ends that this is not the last book in the series.
