SYNOPSIS:

Cinderella never had to deal with this crap.

Jane isn’t entirely sure that Cinderella got such a raw deal. Sure, she had a rough start, but didn’t she eventually land a prince and a happily-ever-after? Meanwhile, Jane is busy waiting on her demanding, entitled sisters, running her cleaning business, and . . . yep, not a prince in sight. Until a party and a broken shoe incident leave Jane wondering if princes—or at least, a certain deliciously hunky billionaire—maybe do exist.

Except Brock Wellington isn’t anyone’s dream guy. Hell, a prince would never agree to be auctioned off in marriage to the highest bidder. Or act like an arrogant jerk—even if it was just a façade. Now, as Brock is waiting for the auction chopping block, he figures it’s karmic retribution that he’s tempted by a sexy, sassy woman he can’t have. But while they can’t have a fairy-tale ending, maybe they can indulge in a little bit of fantasy . .

The Bachelor Auction is a modern-day spin on the classic fairytale, Cinderella. The story is filled with humor, angst, and steam – enough to keep this reader fully entertained. I’m not quite used to reading this type of story by Rachel Van Dyken but it’s obvious that she is a very versatile author and can practically write anything she puts her mind to.

Brock Wellington is the oldest of three sons. His parents were killed in a tragic accident years ago and since then he has thrown himself into the family business. He seems to think his parent’s deaths were his fault and to escape the pain he spends all of his time working and has not bothered with personal relationships. His grandfather plans to remedy the situation. He informs Brock that he is going to auction him off to marry a woman who makes the highest bid. At first, Brock is more than pissed and totally against going through with the auction but when his grandfather’s health comes into question, Brock backs down and agrees to go through with it. No woman has ever been lucky enough to catch his eye, but at the auction announcement party, he ends up rescuing a damsel in distress, but it could turn out that she ends up rescuing him instead.

Jane is the youngest of three sisters. Her father recently passed away and his dying request of Jane was to make sure she kept the family together. It’s been a rough time for Jane because her two older sisters are anything but loving towards her. They spend all of their time whining and bossing poor Jane around. Her sisters force her to attend some fancy party with them and she ends up getting into a scuffle with them on the dance floor, which causes a wardrobe malfunction but a handsome stranger comes swiftly to her rescue. Brock and Jane feel an instant attraction to each other but Jane runs off thinking that she doesn’t stand a chance with Brock since for most of her life she’s been the invisible and dull sister. Days later Brock is still thinking about the woman who captivated him at the party and does his best to try and find her but her name wasn’t anywhere on the party guest list. His luck is about to turn around thanks to his Grandfather.

Brock heads out to his family’s cabin for a vacation which was forced upon him by his grandfather. Jane owns her own cleaning service and one day receives a call from a strange old man, claiming to be her fairy godfather, who hires her for a three-week assignment in which she will stay at a luxurious cabin and only has to clean the place and take care of some of the farm animals. At first, she thinks the man is nuts but when he offers her a hefty salary and her sisters get a little more than overbearing, she decides the job could also serve as a much-needed vacation from her life. When Brock and Jane run into each other at the cabin, they don’t exactly get off on the right foot. Gone is the Prince Charming who saved Jane from being trampled on and in his place is one seriously rude douchebag!! Brock is anything but respectful towards Jane. He is belligerent and condescending every time he’s in her presence. But later on we’ll find out what has Brock all wound up and it does help Jane to forgive some of his rude behavior. Even when he was being a complete prick to her, Jane couldn’t help fight the strong attraction she felt for Brock.

These two have never felt such a connection with anyone else before but they both believe nothing can become of it since Brock is due to marry whoever the highest bidder is at his grandfather’s auction. They try to keep things platonic but that will prove to be an impossible feat.

Will love prevail and allow the girl who has lived in the shadows for too long, to ride off into the sunset towards her HEA with her very own Prince Charming? You’ll have to pick this one up to find out!!

If you’re looking for a light enjoyable read that is low on angst, then this book might just hit the spot for you! THE BACHELOR AUCTION is available now!

EXCERPT REVEAL – ONE STEP CLOSER by Kahlen Aymes

Excerpt

He was going to kill his best friend.  He was literally going to fucking kill him.

The party was buzzing and so was Caleb’s brain.  He didn’t know the time, but it had to be somewhere around 3 AM, and anger was simmering just below the surface.

He was thankful it was winding down and most of the guests had already left because he was agitated and pensive.  The few who lingered were all part of his best friend, Dex’s, crowd.  He knew Jake and Bret because they were part of the same group he used to hang with when he was younger, but there were several new faces.

Caleb had been hell-bent on making his father’s life a living hell. Dex and his friends were rough, tough, and tattooed.  They walked a fine line between right and wrong; more unruly and wild than the preppy crowd that went to the private high school his father demanded he attend. However, that was sort of the point.  The three other guys and two women that remained he’d never met prior to this evening when they’d shown up with his old friend.

Hard to believe how much could change in four years.  Look at Wren.

His eyes had been unwillingly glued to her all night, stalking her every move.

The beer in his hand was probably the sixth he’d had in less than two hours, but he wasn’t drunk. The time at home had been a combination of heaven and hell.  He’d been dying to see Wren and they’d had some great times together in the week he’d been back in Denver, but the familiar aches in his heart and groin hadn’t magically abated during their time apart.  He silently chastised himself for being foolish enough to think that it would ease as she grew into a woman.  His breath left his chest in a loud sigh.

Sure, the alcohol was giving him a buzz, but it wasn’t enough to kill the burn in his gut or the pressure in his chest as he watched Dex put the moves on Wren.  Caleb had asked him to watch out for her in his absence; but Dex was supposed to protect her, not want her.  No one fucking wanted her as much as Caleb had wanted her, or for as long. He’d been tortured with wanting her.  He’d been tormented for years with it, but everyone thought of them as siblings.  The very thought made Caleb’s stomach turn.

Someone was speaking to him, but he barely registered the sound of the female voice.  His eyes were trained on Dex’s arms snaking around Wren’s back and waist, under the luxurious curtain of loose blonde curls that rained to just above her hips.

Caleb lifted the beer to his mouth and took a long pull.  “Hmm?” he asked of the woman standing close to him as he sat, half-assed, on the back of a sofa.  The music was blaring over the state-of-the-art stereo system, and he strained to hear her, but his eyes never left Wren.

“So this is your last year at MIT?  Dex said you two were gonna start some sort of motorcycle company together.  That’s so cool.  My dad is part of an MC.”

Dex’s dad, Darren, had a shop and he had learned a shit load from the two of them; and more importantly, they’d become like family in the years after Caleb lost his mother. Darren was a stand-up guy who’d never abandon his kid, and Caleb envied the close relationship Dex shared with his father. Sure, he was a laborer and Edison Luxon had a successful corporation, but in Caleb’s eyes, Darren was the better man.  He had ten times the respect for him.

Caleb met Dex at a high school wrestling meet when Caleb was thirteen and Dex was fifteen, and the two of them had become friends.  Caleb spent as much time as possible at Darren’s shop and with Dex’s family, as he could.  Dex was sort of a wild child, and his parents were less strict than Edison was, but there was a strong sense of mutual respect in their family.

Caleb and Dex hadn’t been angels growing up, but at least, Dex could count on his parents to have his back.  It was completely unlike the abandonment that Caleb felt from Edison.  Most of the time, Caleb acted out just to get his father’s attention.  It hardly ever worked.  Edison would deliver a cold lecture, calmly deal with the situation by paying someone off, and then forget about his son until the next time he got into trouble.  Caleb had come to the conclusion that the only thing he could do was get the hell away from his father as soon as he was eighteen.  Somehow even that got fucked up.

“Yeah.  We’ve talked about it for a long time, that’s why I’m studying mechanical engineering.  It’s not that easy; we’re both dead broke, and his Dad’s shop can’t spare him right now.  A lot has to happen first,” Caleb answered.

“But…” the young woman began, waving her hand around at the expensive surroundings.  “It looks like your family is rich—”

Caleb cut her off.  “Don’t get excited, honey.  These are my old man’s digs, not mine.”  He huffed. The only reason he even came home, ever, was because of Wren. The music changed to a slow, deep rhythm.

“But this place…”

“Yeah. My dad is swimming in it, but hell will freeze over before I’d ask him for a damn thing.  He’d just hold it over my head for the rest of my life, or at least, the rest of his.”  He could elaborate that his father was a control freak, or explain the reason he hated Edison so much, but he’d most likely never see her again.  So, what was the point?  Besides, he was preoccupied with what was happening across the room.

Caleb glanced down at the woman for the first time since their conversation began.  She had hair so dark it looked black in the dim light.  Her make-up was overdone making her skin tone a deep tan, and her clothing was tight and cheap.  She was a sharp contrast to Wren’s natural, blonde beauty.   Caleb tried to remember the name Dex had mentioned when he’d introduced her earlier.

Was it Marie?  He wracked his brain. Maryann? Michelle? He knew it was an “M” name, but not sure exactly what.  Fuck!

Movement in his peripheral vision made his eyes return to Dex and Wren.  Aside from the girl at his side, everyone else was playing pool on the other half of the big room, except for the one couple dancing.  Caleb’s chest was tight as he tried to breathe; it physically fucking hurt to watch.

Dex was pulling Wren close, pressing her against him and they were swaying softly to the song.  Wren seemed to be enjoying herself.  Her head was tilted up to look at Dex; she was smiling alluringly.  She was so beautiful when she was happy.  How could she keep getting more fucking beautiful every time he saw her?

Wren laid her head on Dex’s shoulder, her hands slipping up around his neck, clearly losing herself.  She had just turned eighteen a month earlier, but Caleb was sure she’d had a drink or two; which was enough to make her less inhibited.

Caleb swallowed.  He was mesmerized, unable to look away from the two of them. It was nothing short of torture knowing it was impossible for him to touch her the same way Dex was able to. Not only was she the daughter of his father’s second wife, she was younger by close to three years.  Sure, he could protect her from that abusive bitch.  He could spend time with her. He could even fantasize about her, but that’s where it stopped.  Even though Wren had developed a kind of crush on him at first, he’d never considered they could be more.  He loved her.  He’d always loved her, but he’d always considered her off limits.

He tried to keep making small talk with the girl whose name he couldn’t remember. He nursed what was left of his beer, until he caught sight of Dex’s hand sliding down over Wren’s ass to the hem of her dress and then creep up slightly; underneath.

Caleb’s eyes narrowed and adrenaline started to flood his veins abruptly clearing the alcohol haze. Suddenly the music was deafening.  The beat was pounding in his head like a hammer; the dim light flickering with the beat. It was getting brighter with each hit of the base drum.

“It looks like Dex likes your little sister.”

Caleb’s nostrils flared, and the skin of his face felt as if it was lit on fire.  He ran a quick hand over the scruff on his jaw trying to alleviate it.  The girl reached out to touch his muscled bicep.

Caleb clenched his teeth.  “Wren isn’t my sister.”

The girl rolled her eyes. “Whatever.  Stepsister then.  Same diff.”

No.  It wasn’t the same thing, not even close.  If the “M” girl sensed Caleb’s irritation, she didn’t show it.

His instincts made his muscles coil, and it was all he could do not to fly across the room and pummel his best friend down to the floor.  He still fought in the occasional underground fight club, but he was in even better shape now.  The boxing club at MIT was official, and kept him lean and honed.  He could still beat the shit out of anyone who challenged him. He could probably do it even easier than before, and right now; he wanted to pound Dex into the fucking ground.

Didn’t he know how Caleb felt about Wren?

When Dex’s hand rose higher under Wren’s dress, his intent to grab her ass full on, Caleb couldn’t stand still any longer.  He dropped his beer and the glass bottle broke with a loud crash on the hardwood floor; making the girl beside him jump.

“Party’s over,” Caleb growled deeply.

The girl looked dumbstruck as Caleb left her standing there and moved quickly across the room to shut down the music.

“Party’s over!” he said, louder this time; shouting so he would be heard over the music.

Dex and Wren split apart when the music stopped abruptly and everyone in the room was staring in Caleb’s direction with blank looks on their faces.  However, they sat down their drinks, and began putting on their coats.

Dex’s hand slid down Wren’s arm and his fingers closed around her hand, as he took a couple of steps toward his friend.  “What’s up, man?  Why?  The house is empty.”

Caleb met his eyes unflinchingly.  “I’m tired.  Everyone out.”  Caleb’s tone was low but the only sound in the silent room.  “Now.”

Dex looked incredulous, and shook his head.  “Why Caleb?”

Caleb continued to stare him down, his eyes menacing.  “I said; I’m tired.”  He was livid and he didn’t even understand why he was so fucking pissed off.  Shit, if he’d been dancing with a beautiful girl he was into, he’d probably have copped a feel too.

Wren pulled her hand from Dex’s grip and walked to Caleb, looking up into his face.  She looked so damn innocent, her brilliant blue eyes wide.  “Cale, what’s going on?  We were only dancing.”

Caleb looked down into her face, his eyes softening at the confused look in her blue eyes, and his thumb lifting her chin briefly.  “Stay here.”

The others, sensing the palpable tension between Dex and Caleb had already started to file up the stairs to the outside door.  Caleb nodded in the direction of Bret, who was waiting for the two girls to precede him up the stairs, then followed.

“I don’t get it, Caleb. I mean, what the hell?” He took two steps in Wren’s direction.

“You don’t have to get it,” Caleb commanded, nodding at the stairwell.  “You just have to get the fuck out of here.”

Dex looked pissed, then glanced down at Wren.  “You wanna come with?” he asked Wren.

Caleb shook his head once and in one second had moved in front of Wren, to separate her from Dex. “She stays.” His tone insisted compliance.

“Caleb, this makes no sense, man. We were having a good time dancing.”

“Yeah, I saw,” Caleb hissed.  The fingers on his right hand began curling into a fist at his side, and he had to mentally insist it didn’t fly and punch Dex right there.  “I want to talk to you. Outside.”

Dex’s eyes widened.  Suddenly he understood.  Definitely, he made a move in Wren’s direction, intending to kiss her full on the mouth just to piss Caleb off, but Wren, sensing it wouldn’t help the situation between the two men, backed up even further behind Caleb.

She’d danced with Dex and purposefully let him get a little too familiar with her because she felt hurt that Caleb was letting Michelle monopolize him on his last night in town.  However, she didn’t intend for the two of them to out and out brawl, and she didn’t see it coming.  She would have preferred spending the evening alone with Caleb; talking, driving around, or watching a movie together; but it hadn’t been her choice.

“Unless you want to die, I suggest you get the fuck out! Now!” Caleb seethed.

Anger flooded through Dex, as well. His friend was overstepping.  He didn’t do anything wrong, and he’d be damned if he’d cower to Caleb’s jealousy.

“Just go, Dex.  Go on,” Wren implored, peering at him from behind Caleb’s solid form. Caleb was poised to strike, and Wren could feel his anger vibrate in the air around them like electricity.

Dex was built; lean and strong, but Caleb was a competitive boxer and formidable; he easily had thirty pounds of muscle on Dex. Wren didn’t want Dex getting pummeled or Caleb regretting his actions afterward, which she was certain he would.  They’d been friends for as long as she’d known them both and the last thing she wanted was to see their friendship ruined.

She mentally kicked herself for leading Dex on.  She was confused by Caleb’s sudden anger, but it made her heart trip around in her chest at the same time. She felt excitement at the prospect he might be jealous making her own adrenalin flow.

Wren liked Dex and he’d taken great pains to fill Caleb’s shoes after he left, but no one could ever take Caleb’s place.  Wren had been in love with Caleb for years, but he was older and not once had she imagined he’d reciprocate her feelings.  Even now, habit made her push down that daydream.

He was just acting like the protective older brother, as he had since the day he found out about her mother’s treatment of her.  He’d changed her life, and that was the beginning of her hero worship.  Before she knew it, her schoolgirl crush had eventually matured and grown into full-blown love.

Dex turned and pulled on his leather jacket.  He started to climb the stairs with Caleb following closely behind, leaving Wren standing in the middle of the big room, alone.   “I’ll be back in a minute,” Caleb said over his shoulder as he left.

Dex’s motorcycle was the only one left in the wide driveway at the back of the house in front of the five-stall garage, signaling that everyone else had already gone.

Before Dex could say a word, Caleb used both of his hands to give Dex’s shoulders a forceful shove that sent him stumbling and falling backward into his bike.  The machine fell over with the loud clang of metal bashing against the pavement, and leaving Dex sprawled face-up over it.

“What the fuck were you doing touching her like that?  Wren is off-limits! You were supposed to protect her, not try to get in her pants!  Have you touched her before this?”

“Son of a bitch!” Dex shouted.  “You just wrecked my bike!  You’re gonna pay for that!”

“Answer me!”  Caleb’s chest was heaving. “What’s going on between you two?”

Dex scrambled to sit up, pushed his weight up off the fallen motorcycle with his hands, and lunged at Caleb without answering; hitting him hard in the middle with his shoulder.  Caleb grunted as the breath was forced from his lungs.  He stumbled backward but didn’t fall.  He pushed Dex back and soon the two were going at each other with fists swinging.  Caleb took a hit on the jaw, pain exploding in his face, before he managed to land a hard right hook to Dex’s temple.  He followed it with a solid left upper cut to his jaw.

Dex fell backward, hard onto the pavement, and landed with a guttural grunt.

“What the hell is your problem?  For Christ’s sake, Caleb, we’re friends!”

Caleb looked down at Dex, his breathing heavy from the exertion of the fight, the fight with his emotions getting the better of him. “Yeah, but friend or not, touch her again and I swear I’ll mother fucking kill you!”

“Wren isn’t fifteen anymore, Caleb!” Dex returned, out of breath and moving to get to his feet.  “She’s an adult and she doesn’t need big brother’s permission to dance with me.”

If anyone was painfully aware of Wren’s age and how she’d blossomed into a gorgeous and graceful young woman, it was Caleb.

“I saw what you were doing, and dancing was the last thing on your goddamned mind!  I could deal with a random guy; but not you.  Anyone but you, Dex!”

Their eyes met and Dex could see the pain on his friend’s face.  He’d watched Caleb come to Wren’s defense at school, with her mother, or anyone who made fun of her or hurt her for years. He should have seen that Wren was more to Caleb than he’d ever admitted.  It was clear that brotherly was not how his friend felt about Wren.  It was clear that it wouldn’t matter who was trying to get with her; Caleb wouldn’t take it well.

Dex nodded and put up his hand to keep Caleb from hitting him again, while he was down.  “Okay, man. You should’ve said something.”

“You should’ve known.”  Caleb’s brow was furrowed with a scowl firmly planted on his face.  He turned his back and reentered the house, running his hand through his over-long hair, anger still pumping through his veins as he went down the backstairs to the lower level.  He probably didn’t need another drink, but he wanted one.  His body was still on fire, and his mind was raging at him.  He took a deep breath, not sure what the confrontation with Wren was going to be like.  She was sitting on one of the big recliners that were lined up in front of the big projection TV on one end of the room.

Caleb walked past her, between the theater set-up and the pool table to the wet bar along one side.  Foregoing the beer in the full-sized refrigerator, he reached for a glass and the crystal decanter of amber liquid.  It was his father’s expensive single malt scotch.  He’d never liked that shit. He was feeling in need of something stronger, so he poured half the glass full and downed it in one big swallow. It burned all the way down; Caleb could feel it run down his esophagus and into his stomach, the heat leaving a trail that didn’t lessen the tightness in his chest.

He refilled the glass and turned, his gaze intense as it settled on Wren.  The music was still off and Wren hadn’t said anything.  Caleb had fought his desire for Wren for years.   Ever since he’d seen her as she really was without that hideous disguise she always wore when she and her mother first moved in with the Luxon men.  The scotch, along with the beer, might be impairing his judgment just a little, but damn, if she wanted to grow up; he’d help her.

His eyes seared over her body, taking in the short dress that left her legs bare and gave Dex easy access to her ass.  Anger flared inside him again.

“I don’t understand you, Caleb—” Wren began, but he held up his hand to stop her.  He took another swallow of the scotch then sat the glass down on the mahogany bar and walked purposely toward her.

She was amazingly beautiful, and he’d had enough fantasies about her to last a lifetime.  He couldn’t resist the blonde curls that tumbled down her back to her waist.   Her dancer’s body was slight and firm, her skin flawless and smooth.  Caleb’s cock was already hard, but blood surged again, making it throb even more painfully inside his jeans.

Their eyes met and locked.  Wren could sense a danger behind his eyes, a look that had never been directed at her.  Her body quickened and heat pooled inside her at the intensity in his eyes as he slowly unbuttoned his white shirt.  When he got to her he reached out and took both of her upper arms in his hands, forcefully pulling her up to stand in front of him, close enough to feel the heat radiating between them.  She smelled amazing.  Like spring flowers with a hint of vanilla.  He leaned down and ran the tip of his nose from her shoulder, up the cord of her neck until his mouth was next to her ear.

He spoke in a guttural whisper. “You wanna play with the big boys?  Then, play with me.”

EXCERPT

“You don’t know anything about me.” My voice is slight but strong, my need to assert myself front and center despite his calling me on the carpet.

“That’s where you’re wrong, Socks. I might not know where you’re from or why I ruffled your feathers today, but I know you’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. Whatever it is that you ran from back home, you did it. You got out and are making it on your own. That takes guts and you deserve mad props for that. I know you like things messy and are goddamn cute when you’re tipsy. I know you’re stubborn as hell and gorgeous as fuck. And that your kiss tastes like an aged whiskey: something I want to sip slowly, feel on my lips, savor on my tongue, and take my time with before I get drunk on it.” With a lift of his eyebrows and a nod of his head, he walks past me, leaving me with my mouth agape and eyes wide.

I can’t move. Just stand staring at the door in front of me as I try to process what he just said, what he meant by it, and yet there’s no use because we just had a whole one-sided conversation and that need to banter with him is gone. Lost to the tingling in my lower belly and the wild spinning of my thoughts.

“Oh, and, Getty?” Zander calls out to me from the kitchen, refusing to continue until I turn to face him, standing there unabashedly shirtless. “If you ever call me pretty again, we’re gonna have a real problem. I guarantee you there is nothing pretty about me.”

I almost smile at the fact that out of all of the crappy things I said to him, that is the one that bugged him the most.

“You are kind of pretty, though,” I murmur, unable to resist goading him further, needing to try to get us back on an even playing field. Because hell if right now I don’t feel like I’m on the low end of the teeter-totter.

His immediate response? A snort to signify that his chiseled abs and the tall, dark, and handsome thing he’s got going on are nothing more than average.

“Last warning, Socks.” His eyes flash with mirth. And what looks like desire.

An unexpected part of me—the one who usually hides and doesn’t ever take a chance—wants to say it again. Just to see what he’d do if I did.

“So damn pretty.” I don’t know who’s more shocked at my comment, him or me, but we stand there for a moment, gazes locked, unspoken words warring across the distance between us.

He walks toward me with a predatory gleam in his eyes and a salacious smirk on his lips that catches me off guard. “I know I said you were brave, Getty, but now you’re just playing with matches.”

I draw in a long inhale as he steps right in front of me. I can’t look at him. My nerve is suddenly gone. Outside, rain pelts the roof. The constant drip into the bucket in the hallway serves as a metronome to this anticipatory silence we are dancing in. The goose bumps on his chest are the only thing I can focus on.

When his thumb and forefinger direct my chin up so I’m forced to meet his eyes, every part of me hums from his touch. From the want of something I don’t quite understand myself and couldn’t ever put into words. Our eyes meet—his intense, mine searching for answers that aren’t his to give—before his gaze flicks down to my mouth and then back up again.

“Not yet, Getty.” He closes his eyes for a beat, and I see what I think is restraint reflected in his grimace, before a ghost of a smile spreads on his lips. “I don’t think you’re ready to light this fire just yet.”

But while they can’t have a fairy-tale ending, maybe they can indulge in a little bit of fantasy . .

Man young handsome sensual elegant model in suit with black skinny necktie and smartphone looks in camera on grey background

Excerpt:  Chapter Four

Jane was pressed so tightly against the wall she would have sworn her body was starting to blend into the wallpaper. Most people didn’t give her a second glance. Then again, she wouldn’t give herself a second glance either.

Women with fake boobs and injected lips mocked her while rich men in three-piece suits completely ignored her.

She self-consciously tugged at hem of the short black dress. In a last ditch effort to modernize the dress, or at least add a bit of spice, she’d grabbed her mother’s long pearls, wrapped them around her neck twice and called it good.

But the minute they’d arrived at the party she’d wanted to disappear. Her sisters were already semi-drunk, thanks to the vodka they’d had in the car. Against Jane’s protests they’d taken shots while she drove. And then she’d paid for parking only to hear them whine that she had parked too far away.

They’d been here for twenty minutes and already she wanted to leave, or at least sit down, but most of the available space was taken by couples talking, eating…kissing.

She was surrounded by the beautiful and rich.

The only reason her sisters had even been invited was because they were complete and total social climbers, and had managed to gain an invitation from a friend who was an heiress to some french fry company.

A waiter passed by with champagne.

She grabbed a glass and downed the entire thing. It didn’t help her nerves, but at least the bubbles semi-calmed her stomach.

Her sweaty feet slid in her too-big red pumps as she pressed harder against the wall to alleviate the ache in her toes.

The music shifted to a loud techno song as the lights went from red to a bright white, and with a gasp she covered her eyes and then blinked a few times to clear her line of vision.

The jumbled sweaty bodies moved aside as the music changed to a slow song. There was just enough of a break for her to see across the room.

“Oh.” It was all she could utter, really the only word she was capable of as her breathing picked up. Without thinking, she grabbed another glass of champagne from a passing waiter, suddenly awkward. What was she supposed to do with her hands?

Thick wavy auburn hair fell in disarray over his forehead. It was lush, shiny, perfect. Were guys born with hair like that? Or was his somehow chemically engineered? His full lips pressed together in a secret smile as the equally handsome man next to him said something, then erupted in laughter.

The first man stiffened, then shook his head. His broad shoulders seemed to grow tight as a drum. A slight tic in his jaw was the only clue that he was irritated or maybe outright angry.

And then his shoulders slumped as he was handed another drink and then another.

Nervous. He must be nervous. But what could a man like that possibly have to be nervous about?

He easily towered over most of the men in attendance. Suddenly his posture changed, then he smiled.

Jane felt her mouth drop open in shock.

Dazzling.

He was…like a duke or a lord or a prince from a storybook. Clearly, she read too many romance novels, but his entire presence demanded attention; screamed authority, importance, and sex. Lots and lots of sex.

Yes, his virility was a tangible thing, as if she could reach out and grasp it with her fingertips.

“What are you doing?” Esmeralda yelled in her right ear, interrupting her blatant sexual fantasy about a complete stranger. Great. That’s what her life had come to. And sadly? It was the most fun she’d had all night.

Jane turned to Esmeralda, prayed for patience, and answered. “Sorry, I was just thinking.”

“You’re so boring.” Esmeralda rolled her eyes. “No wonder you got dumped.”

Another fun fact? Esmeralda was mean when she was drunk.

The reminder of the breakup burned like acid.

It had been a year ago, not that it mattered. It still hurt that the last guy she’d dated had told her that although she was cute, she wasn’t really doing it for him anymore.

Right. Doing it.

Maybe that was because she hadn’t done anything for him or with him, and he found that lacking. But they’d only dated for a few weeks. Did normal girls do that? Put out after a few weeks? Apparently.

She wasn’t normal.

But if that was normal, maybe she was better off being strange.

“Jane, are you even listening to me?” Esmeralda whined. “Essence needs you to dance next to her for a bit. I’m tired and tipsy. I want to sit. Plus your dress blends in enough that it won’t take attention away from her.”

No way. What? What had she just said?

Jane wrapped her arms around her middle. “I’m sorry, what?”

Without warning, Esmeralda grabbed Jane’s hand and jerked her toward the dance floor, causing Jane to lose her footing and crash directly into Esmeralda’s back. Then, like a domino, she slammed back into Essence.

Jane opened her mouth to shout out an apology, but Esmeralda was already too drunk to listen to reason. With determination in her eyes, she reached for the pearls at Jane’s neck but grabbed the fabric of the dress instead.

Her poorly sewn dress ripped instantly, causing the fabric to slink past her strapless bra. A diagonal slit split up her thigh almost all the way to her hip. In an  effort to cover herself, she took a step and tripped, thanks to her clunky shoes.

And then she fell to the floor.

Hard.

Her sisters watched in horror—but neither of them offered a hand. They were probably kicking themselves for forcing her to come. Esmeralda leaned over but missed Jane’s shoulder by a mile, grabbing her hair and giving it a tug, which only made Jane wince harder.

Both sisters were completely tanked.

And she was less than two minutes away from being trampled by the other sweaty bodies around her.

She glanced up.

And into the eyes of the man she’d just been lusting after.

Oh God, the humiliation was complete.

That one glance told her he’d seen it all. She swallowed back the thickness building in her throat. Of course the only time he’d notice her would be when she’d ripped her dress and nearly took out a few guests on her way down to the dance floor.

The crowd gathered around her.

And the sexy man disappeared—probably off in search of a girl with perfect hair, perfect teeth, perfect clothes.

She really should have stayed home.

Tears filled her eyes as a heel pressed into her right hand. With a jerk she tugged her hand free, struggling to get up to stand on her wobbly feet, when suddenly she was pulled to a standing position and then swept up in strong arms.

Jane’s eyes were still so blurry from unshed tears she couldn’t make out the man’s face as he carried her out of the crowd.

He smelled like heaven.

She fought the insane urge to press her face against his chest and just…close her eyes.

Because he felt safe.

Pathetic, when a stranger’s arms provided more safety than her own family. And yet he felt…right.

In a world where things for the past ten years had felt so wrong.

He felt right.

Maybe she’d had too much champagne.

“Are you all right?” he whispered in a deep voice with a hint of a southern drawl. He’d brought her into a private room where the music wasn’t quite so deafening.

He set her on one of the black leather couches and shut the door, muffling the music on the other side.

Blinking, Jane glanced up and gawked, like a starry-eyed teenager. He was the same man she’d seen earlier, the one she’d been captivated by. “Yes.”

“Yes?” He looked confused. His amazing eyebrows drew together, and a small line creased the center of his forehead. Even the line was gorgeous, just as gorgeous as the rest of him.

His thickly muscled body screamed power. Her hands slid down the front of his chest. Even his shirt was smooth. She didn’t realize she’d been basically petting him until his muscles tensed beneath her palm. Oh crap.

“I mean, yes, I’m fine.” She tried to stand then fell back down; her stupid heel was broken. “Or I was fine, until I got trampled.”

The line in his forehead deepened. “You’re not hurt, are you?”

Jane shook her head then pressed her hand to her chest and gasped out, “My pearls!”

“Wait here.” He held out his hands. “I’ll get the necklace, I’m sure it’s where you fell and—”

“No.” Jane slumped, defeated. “They broke off when my sis—” She corrected herself, not wanting to claim the crazies in the other room. “They broke apart when I fell.”

The man sighed loudly and ran his fingers through his perfect hair. “I’ll talk to the club manager and see if anyone turns them in.”

It was on the tip of her tongue to give him all the many reasons why they were irreplaceable, but instead she settled with, “That’s really not necessary. It’s not your fault I was a victim of the techno craze.”

His upper lip curled. “I hate techno.”

“Me too.”

“Is there something I can do? Anything? You promise you aren’t hurt?”

“Careful or you’re going to have me believe you got me trampled on purpose in order to trap me in a private room,” she joked as a smile tugged at her lips.

“Had I known you were willing, I wouldn’t have had to go to such extremes to orchestrate it.”

He appeared stunned by his own answer.

Her breath hitched. Was he flirting with her?

His crystal blue eyes twinkled with amusement.

“So…” Her voice was hoarse, like an old woman’s. Great. “I should probably get back to the party.” Why did she need to go back again? All the reasons seemed to disappear as he maneuvered around the couch and popped a bottle of champagne that had been chilling in a nearby crystal bucket.

“Why don’t you and I have a drink first?” He peered around the table. “I’ll need to send for some shoes. It’s the least I can do.” His gaze heated. “Shoes are appropriate to purchase for a stranger. A dress, I’m afraid…” The corners of his mouth tilted into a sultry smile as his eyes slowly raked over the scraps of fabric barely covering her breasts. “Not so much.”

Did people do that these days? Just send for shoes? Who was this guy? “Really, it’s not necessary. I’ll just stick to the shadows so I don’t scare anyone with my limp and I’ll be okay.” She sounded more confident than she felt, and her lower lip trembled a bit. Next time she was going to hold her ground, stay home, read a book, and be plain boring Jane. This wasn’t her scene. Not by a long shot.

He leaned in close, so close she could smell his aftershave again. “A woman like you doesn’t belong in the shadows.”

Uncomfortable, she tried to make light of the situation again. “Wow, a hero and good with words. I bet you’re just a regular handful, aren’t you?”

“Me?” He laughed as if the thought was the funniest thing he’d ever heard. “No, that would be my twin brothers. They’re the handfuls. I’m…” He seemed to think about it. “Just Brock.”

“Well, Just Brock…” Jane held out her hand. “I’m Just Jane.”

His hand completely engulfed hers as their palms pressed against one another. He was so warm. And big.

Huge.

Huge hands. That meant something, right?

Crap, she was still shaking his hand, and he was grinning at her as if it was the funniest thing that had ever happened to him. And he was looking at her. At her eyes, not at the fact that she was half-naked on a couch, with a broken shoe.

With a jerk, she pulled her hand back and nervously reached to tuck a stray piece of hair behind her ear.

“So, Brock.” Jane looked down at his shoes. That was safe. Shoes. Nothing sexy about a man’s feet, right? Except his were inside shoes that she ventured probably cost more than she’d ever see in a lifetime. “About those shoes.”

“Shoes.” He repeated the word and then quickly stood. “Right, just wait here.”

He disappeared, giving her the breathing room she absolutely positively needed, only to re-appear a few seconds later.

Without shoes.

She frowned; then again, what had she expected? That he’d bang some plastic Barbie over the head with his cell phone, steal her shoes, and then toss them to Jane?

Brock studied her. “Your shoes should be here within the next fifteen minutes. I just sent my degenerate brother across the street. Saks is still open. The night is young.”

Saks?

Shoes from Saks?

She’d never owned anything from Saks. Ever. But she knew the store; didn’t every woman? Still, the most expensive thing she’d ever owned had been the pearls.

“That’s really…” She waved her hand in the air and stood. “Not necessary…you can tell him that—”

Brock reached for her hand and lightly tugged her back. “Sit. It is necessary. And although I typically wait until the third date to buy a woman gifts, I think your nearly getting trampled allows me to break that rule.”

Still tense, Jane nodded and took a shaky look around the small, private room.

“To new shoes?” Brock grabbed his drink and lifted it in the air toward her.

She lifted her glass and clinked it against his then took a small sip. The champagne was pink and sweet, with a tart aftertaste. “It’s good.”

“You sound surprised.” Brock’s lips lifted in a smile.

She scrunched up her nose. “I’m not much of a drinker, and I typically don’t like drinks that are the same color as my underwear.”

The minute the words were out of her mouth, she froze, barely managing to suppress the urge to clap a hand over her mouth. She wanted someone to run her over with a car.

With a choke, Brock nearly spit out the sip he’d just taken. Face flushed, he stared her down and then whispered, “You’re making me regret my decision to send out for boring black shoes.”

“I didn’t…I mean, pink is fine.” Stop talking, stop talking. “Not all of my underwear is pink. I have black, too.”

Brock’s lips parted with a greedy exhale, and he downed the rest of his drink. “Oh?”

Hell in a handbasket.

Why was she giving him a rundown of her lingerie drawer? As if he were a naughty Santa with a checklist in front of him, putting down little marks on the little boxes that read “red lacy thong”? Check. “Black boyshorts”? Double check.

“I’m more of a boxer brief sort of guy,” he said smoothly, bringing her back to the present.

“Huh?”

“Too far?” He chuckled. “I figured if I knew the color of yours…I should at least show you mine.” He leaned forward.

Had he said show?

Just how drunk was he? Maybe that was the reason his eyes were zeroing in on her mouth. He blinked, and then seemed to sway a bit.

Was he okay? And why was he still staring at her mouth? Did she have something on her face?

Self-consciously, she pressed her fingertips to her lips only to have him suck in a breath and lift his right hand from his thigh as if wanting to touch the place where her fingers had just been.

“Got the shoes!” a male voice yelled as Jane jerked away from Brock.

What had just happened?

“Holy shit, you’re hot.”

She recognized the man from before. He was about an inch shorter than Brock, but had the same perfect auburn hair. “I’m Bentley, and since this one’s about to get married, I feel like it’s only fair to let you know that out of the two of us, I’m the single, available one, who’s also—lucky for you—been given a higher rating in the sack.”

Married?

He was getting married?

And hitting on her?

Or was she hitting on him? After all, she was the one who’d mentioned underwear. Ugh, she wanted to crawl under the table and die.

Excerpt

The sun burned across a cloudless sky. I felt the intensity of it bake into the skin of my bare shoulders.

Waves crashed against the shore, some carrying surfers with them in the distance. A few feet ahead of me, a small child kicked a sand castle and giggled with his father.

I sat down on a step and slipped my sandals off.

The sand was warm underneath my feet as I dug my toes into it, staring out at the world in front of me. I rubbed a shell between my fingers as I watched a couple walk hand-in-hand toward the pier.

They looked happy. I tried to remember the last time Marcus held my hand, or even reached for it.

My chest burned when I couldn’t conjure up an image in my mind.

I looked down at the faint line marking my left ring finger. The token I was left with now that I no longer wore my ring. It was subtle, thanks to my naturally pale skin, but to me it stood out like embers glowing in the dark.

I hated it. I didn’t need a reminder of how I’d failed as a wife. Or how Marcus stopped seeing me as one.

Maybe I could coat my entire hand in sunblock except for that thin strip. Burn the memory away.

The idea seemed promising enough to consider.

From my back pocket, my cell beeped with an incoming message.

I wiped the tear from my cheek as I stood and palmed my phone, expecting to see Tori’s name lit up on my screen.

I froze on the step, my free hand on the railing as I stared curiously at the message and the number it was sent from.

Wild Girl. Eaten any innocent men alive today yet?

My lip twitched, the hint of a smile.

I sat back down, reading the message a second time as I remembered my conversation with this stranger yesterday.

My accidental verbal beat-down.

Jesus. I really let him have it.

I couldn’t think of the last time I was that embarrassed.

I told the guy to remove a dildo from his mouth, for Christ sakes.

All in all, whoever this was seemed to be a good sport about it. He could’ve laid into me and cussed me out. Made me feel even more like a complete shit for dialing the wrong number and not confirming the identity of my intended victim before I tore into him like he owed me money.

He was more than decent about the whole thing. Easily forgiving.

And now he was messaging me out of nowhere and striking up conversation.

Wild.

He wanted to talk to me.

Huh.

I tapped my thumb on the edge of the phone case, then hovered over the letters of my keypad as I stared at the message.

Did I even want to talk to this guy anymore? Wasn’t this weird? We didn’t know each other. Our encounter was a mistake. A one-time mishap, never to be repeated.

Right?

She’s a mixture of most of her female characters: sassy, intelligent, stubborn, reserved, outgoing, driven, emotional, strong, and wears her heart on her sleeve. All of which she displays daily with her husband and three children where they live in Southern California.

On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Since then she has written The Driven Series (Driven, Fueled, Crashed, Raced, Aced), the standalone Driven Novels (Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, Hard Beat, and Down Shift (Releasing 10/4/16)), and a short story titled UnRaveled. She is currently finishing up Sweet Cheeks a standalone novel out at the end of 2016.

Her plans for 2017 include a sports romance duet (The Player (#1) and The Catch (#2)) and the Everyday Heroes series (Cuffed (#1), Combust (#2), and Cockpit (#3). She’s also writing a novella for the 1,001 Dark Night series that will be out in February 2017.
She loves to hear from her readers so make sure you check her out on social media.

Things a good neighbor can do for you:

1. Give you a cup of sugar

2. Let you borrow his lawnmower

3. Water your plants while you’re on vacation

4. Make your eyes roll back in your head with his tongue

Katya Tocci has never paid much attention to who lives next door – her career always kept her too busy. She’s a good girl, working her way to becoming the most sought after cake designer in all of San Francisco.

But even a good girl’s gotta cut loose once in a while, right? So one fake dating profile later, and she’s ready to tarnish her squeaky clean image. Little does she know, her fun time is closer to home than she ever imagined.

Throw in a neighbor who wants to corrupt her, and another who just wants to own her, and her entire world is flipped upside down.

Who knew neighbors could be so helpful?

Excerpt

It was no joke.

Liam had been waiting in the lobby for her at nine o’clock, sharp. Liam Edenhoff – “but everyone calls me Eden” – he’d introduced himself again to her before guiding her out to a taxi he’d had waiting.

She felt a little nauseous. She’d chugged down another half bottle of wine, and some crème de menthe, before heading downstairs to meet him. She’d almost talked herself out of going, but she’d made the mistake of telling her roommate Tori about the whole fiasco. Apparently, Katya owed it to women everywhere (and Tori in particular) to explore this opportunity to its fullest. She’d all but been shoved out the apartment, the door slammed and locked in her face.

“Nervous?” Liam Eden-whatever-his-name-was asked her as the cab slowed to a crawl.

“Nope,” Katya’s voice sounded overly loud.

“Liar. Tonight is gonna be an interesting night, angel cake.”

“Stop calling me that.”

“What’s your last name?”

“None of your business.”

“Okay then – when the gang bang starts, I’ll tell them to call you Katya X.”

She couldn’t stop the blush from happening that time. Liam burst out laughing, then soothed the sting by grabbing her hand.

Even when they got out of the cab, he didn’t let go of her. Normally, she would’ve been uncomfortable with a stranger assuming such a familiarity with her, but this time, she was thankful for it. She held onto him tightly as they walked down a crowded street. Then they turned into an alley, and his gang bang joke didn’t seem so funny. He led her to a plain door, above which a simple, small, neon sign spelled out “The Garden”. Outside were several small groups of people, chatting and smoking. Some of them called out greetings to him, all of them using his nickname, but a large and scary looking bouncer addressed him very properly.

“Hey, Mr. Edenhoff, wasn’t expecting you in tonight. Any problems?”

“Nope, just bringing a friend to show her the place, let her see what I do for a living.”

All the blood was quickly rushing from Katya’s limbs, pooling somewhere in her stomach. None of this was a joke. He really did own the place, that much was obvious.

As Liam led her through the door, though, Katya actually felt a surge of confidence. She was still nervous, still more than a little scared, but she was okay with it. Liam seemed like a nice guy, he wasn’t going to take her into some dark room and insert foreign objects into her orifices. She could leave whenever she wanted to, whenever it got too uncomfortable. Everything was fine, and for once, she was doing something exciting. She’d een have something interesting to talk about at work the next day.

Finally.

WRAPPED UP IN READING’s REVIEW OF NEIGHBORS

About the Author:

stylo

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since … forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball – I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I’m clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there’s your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair – both a curse and a blessing – and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can’t understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.
