REVIEW – ATTICUS: A WOMAN’S JOURNEY WITH THE WORLD’S WORST BEHAVED DOG by Sawyer Bennett

SYNOPSIS

A heart-warming and deliciously funny story about the world’s worst behaved dog and how he trained his human how to love herself again.

Through the haze of vodka and self-loathing, Hazel Roundtree saw the poor creature lying in a ditch.

One brown eye. One blue.
Covered in mud and crying from pain, the puppy was desperately trying to free itself from a hopeless situation.

She almost kept walking by. She had her own problems and besides… no one had ever stopped to help her.

Who we’re ultimately meant to be is a journey without end, but there’s always a defined start…

Hazel had no idea the dog would be her beginning, her second chance, the miracle she never saw coming. She named him Atticus. He grew up to be a very bad—and completely awesome—dog. He took Hazel on a life-changing journey filled with mischievous adventure and painful heartbreak. In the end, Hazel grew up to be completely awesome, too.

*****FIVE STARS+++++++*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I’m not sure at what point in my life I became an absolute doormat, but I know I let it happen. But more than all of these new realizations about myself is the one thing that changed it all.

Atticus.

Having responsibility for him gave me purpose. Seeing the way he loves me for who I am and nothing more makes me realize there are many types of love in this world, and I wasn’t searching for the right type.
The unconditional type.

I’m so in love with Sawyer Bennett right now. This book caught me off guard. I had no idea that Sawyer could write such a heartwarming and equally heartbreaking story that would affect me so deeply. My friends know I am a HUGEdog lover. My Phoebe is my WORLD!! She is a total diva and could tie with Atticus for the most misbehaved dog ever but just like the Heroine, Hazel, I wouldn’t have her any other way! This story spoke to me on so many levels and I felt that Hazel was my kindred spirit. While there is a romance in this book, it takes a backseat to the heart of this story which is family, friends, and the unconditional love that only a special fur baby can give us!

Hazel Roundtree is at the absolute lowest point of her life. Her husband left her for another woman and kicked her out of their home a few months back. She’s got a part-time job at a bar making less than minimum wage and is currently taking residence on her friend’s couch since she doesn’t have enough money to afford a place of her own. Estranged from her mother and sister, she literally has no one to lean on. Then one day she stumbles upon a cute ball of fur that’s caught up in some barbed wire in a muddy ditch. Hazel has never had a dog in her life but something about that little guy tugs on her heart and she rescues him. She takes him to a local veterinary clinic and with only $8 in her pocket she hopes that the good doctor will take care of the pup out of the goodness of his heart. Oley Peele is a cranky old man and at first, he comes off extremely crotchety but they work out a deal between them. He mends the poor pup’s injuries and Hazel works off what she owes at his clinic.

This will be the beginning of two of the greatest and most impactful relationships in Hazel’s life. From then on out, Hazel starts to undergo a transformation. No longer allowing herself to be a doormat and looking for love with all the wrong men. Atticus along with Oley become the main focus of her life. Atticus is a rambunctious and misbehaving ball of fur but he brings a sense of peace and happiness to Hazel’s life that she has never had before.

Hazel’s adoptive family grows when she invites her friend Bernard, a homeless Vietnam war veteran, over for their weekly dinners and baseball game watching. As the story progresses, she ends up with a good job, a nice apartment of her own, and a couple of old men who become secondary father figures to her. She is finally putting herself first and things are falling into place nicely for her.

There is basically no steam in this story and honestly, I think it would have been out of place if it was. Love will come to Hazel and it will be at the right time and with the PERFECT guy! I’m so happy that she got her HEA. By the time I got to the end of this book, I felt like she was a good friend.

Get ready to cry so hard, you’ll find it hard to breathe. Keep that box of Kleenex handy. I can’t remember when a story hit me this hard!!

REVIEW – MAREK (Cold Fury Hockey, #11) by Sawyer Bennett

SYNOPSIS

When the Carolina Cold Fury’s hottest young star gets blindsided by an ex with a scandalous secret, it’s game on.

“One of the best voices in contemporary romance.”—New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne

Marek Fabritis is used to delivering blows, not receiving them. But when he gets tipped off by an anonymous email about his ex-girlfriend, the news leaves him ice cold—and it’s not because Gracen Moore is getting married to a total jerk. It’s the fact that Marek has a three-year-old daughter he never knew about. Now he’s going back home, not to play knight in shining armor but to make damn sure that no man takes what’s his. For the first time, there might be something more important than hockey.

Gracen Moore has always loved Marek. That’s why she let him go, so he could pursue a career in the NHL. And that’s why she never told him about Lilly. Only now does Gracen realize that she made an unforgivable mistake. But is that any reason for Marek to crash her wedding and make an epic scene? If the spark that still smolders between them is to be trusted, maybe. Still, Gracen’s not getting her hopes up. Because she knows better than anyone that appearances aren’t always what they seem. . . .

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I can never allow myself to forget what caused the rift between Marek and me in the first place He left me. He decided he didn’t love me anymore. He wanted a life without me. A life with other things that weren’t me.

The Cold Fury Hockey still remains one of my favorite Sawyer Bennett series! I can’t believe it’s been four years since “ALEX” was released and we’re up to the eleventh book!! I hope it never ends. I was worried for a while that MAREKwas going to be a “let down” for me but luckily, I was won over towards the end. Marek is not a likable character. For most of the story, he walks around with a huge chip on his shoulder and is a complete ass! He is definitely not my favorite Cold Fury player, BUT, this one is filled with Ms. Bennett’s delectably steamy scenes and I’m a sucker for a good “second chance romance” with a guaranteed HEA.

Marek and Gracen were high school sweethearts and madly in love. Several years later as Marek is graduating from college, he gets recruited by an NHL team. He didn’t want to be tied down and so he leaves Gracen behind…brokenhearted. Fast forward three years later and the two find themselves in each other’s lives again when Marek goes back home to stop his first love from making the biggest mistake of her life by marrying the wrong guy. Marek is in for a huge surprise when he finds out that he is the father of a precocious three-year-old little girl. He’s beyond furious with Gracen for keeping Lilly a secret from him thereby cheating him out of being a father to her from the very beginning. He brings Gracen and Lilly back home with him to Raleigh so that he can spend some time with his daughter.

For almost three-quarters of the story, Marek behaves like a petulant man-child. He’s often belligerent and cruel to Gracen and throws the fact that she deprived him of three years of being a father every chance he gets. It was getting old really fast. But, these two have incredible sexual chemistry and they have a hard time staying away from each other. Just when things start to look promising Marek goes and messes everything up yet again with his utter stupidity. He’s one of the most clueless characters in this entire series. While Marek walks around not really knowing his true feelings, Gracen has never stopped loving him but won’t allow herself to have hope because he obliterated her heart once before. She’d never be able to survive that kind of pain again.

Will they ever be able to move beyond the feelings of hurt and betrayal from the past?

REVIEW – THE PECKER BRIEFS (Legal Affairs #7) by Sawyer Bennett

SYNOPSIS

I never thought a pecker would get me in so much trouble.

I mean, sure… if you’re talking about a certain anatomical feature of mine that the ladies just love. Given my bachelor status and appreciation for all things curvy and feminine, I could absolutely see that. But a different pecker is making my life much harder than it needs to be.

My name is Ford Daniels, partner at the law firm of Knight & Payne, and my latest case has me wading through the finer points of peckers—woodpeckers that is. Specifically, the red-cockaded woodpecker. I swear, I can’t make this stuff up but that’s what the sexy-as-hell blonde chained to a tree told me this morning.

Her name is Viveka Jones and she is so much more than a pretty face. She’s got wit, charm, and razor-sharp smarts. Turns out my client is looking to bulldoze the red-cockaded woodpecker’s natural habitat in favor of a multimillion-dollar subdivision and the sexy attorney with legs for days (and days), just happens to be counsel for an animal rights group looking to put a halt to construction.

My client’s pissed, but all I can think about is getting Viveka across the table from me. And then on the table underneath me. Perhaps up against the wall. And then—

Well, let’s just say when it’s all said and done, I’m hoping the red-cockaded woodpecker isn’t the only pecker that gets some attention from Miss Viveka Jones.

I have another Sawyer Bennett series to add to my “Favorites” shelf! I don’t know why I waited so long to read her ”Legal Affairs” series but I will be making some time to get to these books!! ”THE PECKER BRIEFS” was a well-paced sweet & super steamy read!! I loved the Hero, the Heroine, and just the whole feel of this story.

Ford Daniels is a successful lawyer working for one of the elite law firms in Raleigh, N.C. He’s a real ladies man and loves his carefree life as a bachelor. No woman has been able to hold his attention longer than a few weeks, until he meets the beautiful and headstrong opposing attorney of his upcoming case, Viveka Jones.

Viveka is an animal rights attorney. Recently divorced, she lives in a tiny modest home, making enough just to get by. She has a huge heart and she’ll take on cases even when she knows that her clients can’t afford to pay her because protecting the rights of animals is her passion. One of Ford’s clients calls him and orders him to get down to his construction site to handle a situation for him. When he arrives what he thought was going to be an annoying start to his day, turns out to be the highlight actually when he sees a beautiful woman who obviously chained herself to a tree. He’s even amused when Viveka hands over a court-ordered injunction against any work being done on the site in order to protect the red-cockaded woodpecker which is on the endangered species list, and happens to have built a nest in that tree along with all the surrounding trees in the area.

Ford and Viveka have crazy chemistry. It only takes 24 hours for them to wind up tangled between the sheets and from then on, they can barely stay away from each other for more than a day. Their romance was HOT and oh so sweet! This wasn’t a particularly angsty read but we do get some drama when it becomes clear that someone will do just about anything to silence Viveka. Ford wants to take matters into his own hands and protect Viv but she’s just as adamant about protecting his career and stubbornly makes him promise to not take any action.

Ford and Viveka try to keep their romance under the radar as it could cause big problems for them since they’re currently opposing attorneys on a court case. Will they be successful in keeping their relationship a secret and can they get through the case unscathed when it’s apparent that someone has it out for Viveka?

She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or even better, both.

Sawyer also writes general and women’s fiction under the pen name S. Bennett and sweet romance under the name Juliette Poe.

”I want to continue to get to know you. I want to see where this goes because I have this feeling deep in my gut that whatever is waiting at the end for us is going to be something beyond my wildest imagination.”

The ”Sex and Sweet Tea” series is like the Hallmark movie channel’s version of Sawyer Bennett’s romances. Normally her books contain a healthy dose of steam but her alter ego, Juliette Poe, likes to keep the steam very light and in the case of PRETTY AS A PEACH, non-existent. Don’t get me wrong, there doesn’t need to be gratuitous sex in a book to make it good. As long as the story is entertaining and holds my interest I don’t mind if the “sexy” is missing. This was a sweet romance between a gorgeous Farmer named Colt Mancinkus and a beautiful city girl, Darby Culhane, who is the newest resident of Whynot, North Carolina.

Darby has just moved to the town of Whynot, with her seven-year-old daughter Linnie. She is in the process of divorcing her husband of nine years and starting a new life managing a peach tree farm that her ex-brother-in-law has handed over to her. She wasn’t looking for love but it sure found her from the moment she locked eyes with Colt Mancinkus. Even though they were both competing for a grant from the state to help fund the costs to operate their individual farms which should have made them enemies, they ended up becoming instantly attracted to each other.

Their path to a ”happily ever after” is not free from bumps and roadblocks along the way. Darby’s daughter has a huge chip on her shoulder and is making life challenging because she’s not in the least bit happy about being relocated from the only home she’s ever known back in Illinois. She also clings to the hope that her parents will eventually reconcile. Also, Darby’s soon to be ex is fighting her on the divorce and will use any means possible to get what he wants. The man is cold and extremely ruthless.

EXCERPT

I’m back at Farrington Farms. It’s a different day, slightly different story.

I pull my truck up right in front of Darby’s house. I hadn’t expected to be back here this Sunday morning, but after I hung up the phone with Darby not too long ago, I decided to take matters into my own hands. This morning when Darby called to regretfully inform me that she and Linnie could not attend Sunday dinner with my family, it hit me like a wrecking ball that my interest in Darby extends far beyond just mere intrigue into this fascinating woman. I now fully admit I’ve come to like her.

Strange.

I’ve never used the word “hate” in my life to describe my feelings for someone, but before I ever met Darby, I intensely disliked her. It’s not lost on me that within just a matter of moments of meeting and talking to her, my entire perception changed. Darby really let herself get into trouble with me when she made the bold move to pull her application for the expansion grant from consideration. Yes, Darby is one of the most beautiful women I have ever known, but she became infinitely more attractive when I realized she has a heart of gold.

So here I am at her house, unbidden and possibly unwelcome, to make it known I have an interest in her. And if I’m interested in her, it means I have to be interested in Linnie.

After I hung up the phone with Darby, I had a new person I intensely disliked.

Her husband, Mitch.

“I’m really sorry, Colt,” Darby had explained on the phone not but half an hour ago. “But we’re not going to be able to come to supper today.”

“Why?” I asked quite simply.

She had no hesitation in admitting, “It’s Linnie. She’s just… in a mood, I guess. She’s flat-out refusing to go. While I could certainly force her and drag her to your house, it would not be a pleasant experience for any of your family.”

“What’s the reason for the mood?” I could sense by the tone of her voice that something had happened to put Linnie in her funk.

Darby didn’t answer right away. I could read into her pause she was trying to figure out whether she should share a burden with me. So I urged her. “Talk to me, Darby. What’s going on?”

There was no hesitation after that. She let it all come out in a rushing confession of frustration. “Her father called her this morning. I could only hear her end of the conversation, but it was clear he was in full-out attack mode on me. I could tell that whatever he was saying on his end, he was trying to manipulate Linnie into putting pressure on me to come back to Illinois.”

I didn’t push her for the details. I can imagine some of the things a parent might say to an impressionable seven-year-old to turn them against the other parent. While I don’t have any firsthand experience with such things, I’ve had plenty of friends and acquaintances over the years who have gone through bitter divorces and custody struggles. I’m aware there are some people in the world who will use their kid as a weapon.

Yeah, I don’t like this Mitch dude.

I assured Darby there would be other Sunday dinners they could come to. I put her mind at ease by saying I completely understood what she was going through, even though I don’t. The only thing I did understand is I had made a new friend in Darby McCulhane. I thought she was a good woman. She’s struggling right now to get situated into a new home and is very far away from everything that provided her security.

She helped me out and by extension helped my family out when she gave up the expansion grant.

I’m going to return the favor.

I turn my truck off and hop out with determination. After jogging up the creaky porch steps, I give three solid raps with my knuckles on the wood casing of the screen door. Within moments, Darby’s opening it and blinking at me in surprise.

“Good morning,” I say cheerily.

Darby pushes open the screen door wider and steps back in silent invitation. As I brush past her, she asks, “What are you doing here?”

“I’ve come to kidnap your daughter,” I tell her.

I did not expect this to alarm Darby, so it was not surprising to see the corners of her mouth tip upward. “Kidnap my daughter? I just want to make sure I heard that correctly.”

I grin and nod. “Cross my heart I won’t corrupt her or anything.”

Darby stares at me for a few moments and while she’s clearly amused, I can see a little bit of distance in her eyes—not because she doesn’t trust me, but because she doesn’t want to place her burdens on my doorstep.

I give her a reassuring smile. “I’m going to take her horseback riding. You told me the other day when you came over to have lunch that she had a horse and it was one of the things she really missed.”

It’s not hard to figure out that the rapid blinking of Darby’s eyes means she’s trying to dispel some wet emotion my offer has caused. The last thing I want to do is make a lady cry, so I also add on with a wink, “And that way, you can have a few hours of relaxation all to yourself. Maybe go get your nails done or your hair fixed up all pretty or something. Not that it isn’t pretty as is, but you know… spend some time on Darby.”

She just stares at me in disbelief. That lasts for only about three seconds before she snaps her head to the right and yells up the stairs, “Linnie. Get down here.”

The footsteps overhead are far too heavy to belong to a seven-year-old. The way she’s stomping through the house above us indicates she is not a happy kid. She comes down the staircase with her shoulders hunched forward. When she reaches the bottom landing, she glares at her mom and says, “What?”

It’s not quite belligerent, but it is rude.

As I was raised by a Marine Corps drill instructor father with no patience for smart talk and a strong, southern woman who insists on manners, a crappy attitude has never been something tolerated in our family. I want to tell Linnie to have some respect for her mother, but that would put us off on the wrong foot.

To my surprise, Darby makes it known she doesn’t find her daughter’s attitude acceptable. She narrows her eyes slightly, and says in an even but firm voice, “Remember what we said? You need to check your attitude at your bedroom door. I don’t care if you want to stay up there and sulk but when you’re in my presence, I expect you to be pleasant.”

Linnie doesn’t respond, but her cheeks turn pink.

Darby glances to me and inclines her head my way before telling Linnie, “Colt is here to take you horseback riding if you would like to go.”

There’s no doubt in my mind I made the right decision in coming here when Linnie’s entire face lights up with joy. Her head snaps my way so fast her glasses slide down to the end of her nose. She just pushes them right back up as she asks, “Really?”

I nod. “I’ve got a good buddy who has a few horses, and he’s got two ready for you and me to saddle up for some trail riding.”

It’s also made clear to me that despite Linnie’s sullen attitude toward her mom, she was actually raised with good manners. She immediately turns to Darby. In a very sweet yet imploring voice, she asks, “Can I go, Mom? Please.”

Darby doesn’t hesitate or make her daughter suffer. She just smiles at her and gestures toward the staircase. “Go get changed into some riding gear.”

Linnie doesn’t need to be told twice. She goes flying up the stairs.

SYNOPSIS:
New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett has written her most gripping and poignant tale yet. Provocatively heart-breaking, audaciously irreverent and romantically fulfilling, The Hard Truth About Sunshine exposes just how very thin the line is between a full life and an empty existence.

Despite having narrowly escaped death’s clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It’s only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life.

What could they possibly learn from one another? How could they possibly help each other to heal? And the question that Christopher asks himself over and over again… can he learn to love again?

He’s about to find out as he embarks upon a cross country trip with a beautiful woman who is going blind, a boy with terminal cancer, and an abuse victim who can’t decide whether she wants to live or die.

Four people with nothing in common but their destination. They will encounter adventure, thrills, loss and love. And within their travels they will learn the greatest lesson of all.

The hard truth about sunshine…

Warning: This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

✦✦✦✦✦

I’ve never been to a state fair before. We have them in Illinois and I’d venture to say they’re just as big, if not bigger, given how important agriculture is to that state. But the spectacle all around us as we walk over the massive fairgrounds tells me that the state of North Carolina takes this fair business very seriously.

I’ve mostly enjoyed watching Linnie look around with wide eyes filled with excitement and enthusiasm I just haven’t seen from her in a long time.

Even though I wore my best running shoes complete with personalized arch supports, my feet are absolutely killing me from all the walking we did. Not only did we traverse the midway at least ten times so Linnie could ride the same rides over and over again, but we had to try all the various foods being sold.

Crazy food.

Not only do they have the standard fair fare, like funnel cakes and candied apples, but they have foods that are particular to the state. I had a little bit of Eastern North Carolina barbecue—the kind with the vinegar-based sauce—as well as calabash-style fried seafood.

Then came the really crazy food—much of it deep-fried. There were fried Twinkies, fried Oreos, and even deep-fried butter balls. That’s right… Frozen balls of butter that were then coated in batter and deep-fried.

There were pickle popsicles, chocolate-covered bacon, Krispy Kreme hamburgers, and even one vendor truck that boasted chocolate-covered bugs. We avoided that one.

It’s late afternoon, and we’re all dragging. Colt is gallantly carrying our loot. This includes a bag of gummy bears for Linnie, cotton candy he promised his mama, a goldfish Linnie won tossing Ping-Pong balls into fishbowls, and a huge pink stuffed bear Colt won popping balloons with darts.

“Look… the line for the Ferris wheel isn’t long at all,” Linnie says with excitement as she points that way.

It’s been the one ride she hasn’t been on yet but was on her list to try. I silently groan at the thought of waiting for her to ride it. I’m not into the rides at all. No offense to the carnies, but they don’t look like the most reliable workers in the world. My luck, I would end up on the ride where an important bolt was misplaced, and I’d be facing imminent death.

I wanted to hold to this philosophy with my daughter and forbid her from going on any of the rides, but I couldn’t face her disappointment. So I relented and prayed the entire time she and Colt rode one.

“Okay,” I say tiredly. I hold my arms out for Colt to transfer all the stuff to me. “I’ll just wait over here.”

“You should come on this one with us,” Colt says.

I’m shaking my head before the words come out. “No way. Terrified of heights.”

And you know, this thing is probably not built very solidly.

“Come on, Mom,” Linnie pleads. “Just go on one ride with us. This one is really slow, and I’m sure it’s super safe.”

There’s no way that thing is safe.

But I also see something in Linnie’s eyes I used to see a lot but has been a rarity of late. She truly wants to spend quality time with me.

“I have an even better idea,” Colt says as he nods to the Ferris wheel. “You two ladies go ride that, and I’m going to sit here and hold on to everything.”

“Awesome,” Linnie exclaims without even waiting for my agreement that I’d be a willing participant. She grabs my hand and starts pulling me toward the end of the Ferris wheel line. I look over my shoulder helplessly at Colt, who grins at me. He doesn’t even look the slightest bit worried I might be marching off to my death.

My stomach rolls the entire time we are waiting, and Linnie just chatters on excitedly about the farm animals we had seen in one of the buildings. She’s trying to talk me into some cows and chickens and has promised she will take care of them.

It’s not that I doubt her sincerity, but she is only seven and isn’t the best on follow through. Still, it might not hurt to get a few chickens. Carlos can easily build us a coop. It would be nice to have fresh eggs each day.

It happens all too quick, but we are now at the front of the line and being ushered into one of the carts. A thin-looking bar is placed over our laps, and Linnie starts rocking the cart back and forth.

“Stop doing that,” I say, clutching onto the bar for dear life. We’re currently suspended two feet off the ground, yet my pulse has gone through the roof.

Linnie laughs, but she stops the rocking motion. “Sorry, Mom.”

She doesn’t sound sorry at all.

“I can get off right now, and Colt can get on,” I suggest. “He’d be glad to let you rock this back and forth.”

“No way,” she says. She peels one of my hands off the bar and holds it tightly with hers. “I won’t do that anymore. I want to ride this one with you.”

That was all I needed to hear from my sweet little girl. A burst of confidence and bravery wells up within me, and I give her hand a squeeze back. Besides, if I’m going to fall to my death, at least it will be doing something that makes my daughter extremely happy.

I gasp when the Ferris wheel goes into motion and we shoot forward and upward a few feet before coming to a stop again, so the next people can be loaded into the cart behind us. I refuse to look down and resolve to look straight out at the horizon.

In order to take my mind off my residual fears, I ask Linnie, “Did you have a good time today, honey?”

Linnie nods. Lifting my arm, she scoots under it, prompting me to cuddle her into my side. “I really did.”
