Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak

Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe Winston remembers everything—every look, every word, every single unrequited second—and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone.

Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be . . .

Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists.

But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor . . .

Dr. Strange Beard is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a stand-alone, and is the fifth book in the USA TODAY bestselling Winston Brothers series.

WRAPPED UP IN READING’s REVIEW OF DR. STRANGE BEARD

Excerpt:

“Simone, this is not one of our adventures from when we were kids. This is not finding Blithe Tanner’s cat. These men are murderers, drug dealers, thieves.”

“I know.” Boy oh boy, did I know. I didn’t want to be here anymore than he did. I was frightened. Yet allowing Roscoe to be taken on his own hadn’t been an option. “I can handle myself, and I can provide backup for you, if you need it.”

Roscoe gripped my shoulders. “Nothing can happen to you, do you understand?” His words were emphatic, his gaze disoriented, desolate, frantic. “If anything happens to you, I’ll . . .” He swallowed, apparently unable to finish the sentence.

My heart twisted to see him like this. I wished there were some way to show him what I could do, what I was capable of, so he would stop seeing me as a liability.

Well, why can’t you?

“Huh.”

Now there was a thought.

Stepping out of his grip, I walked backward to the other side of the room and took a deep breath. “Okay. Come at me.”

He blinked. “What?”

“I want you to come at me.”

“Simone,” he seethed.

“Come at me, bro.” I did that little movement with my fingers, my palm turned upwards. “Come at me or I’ll start singing again.”

“I’m not doing this.”

“Fine.”Frustrating. “I’ll come at you.”

He stood there, features set, looking raw.

Moving quickly forward, staying light on my feet, I faked right and then went left, hooking him behind the back of his leg, catching his arm to twist behind his back, and sending him to the ground—face-first—with a thud.

I winced as he grunted, my knee at the base of his spine, his arm restrained behind his back. “Sorry! But you wouldn’t listen to me.” Leaning forward, I whispered in his ear, “Are you okay? Did I hurt you?”

Roscoe’s back and shoulders rose and fell with an expansive breath, like he was about to respond, but in the next moment he’d spun his legs to the right, leveraged my knee on his back to throw me off-balance, and slipped his wrist from my hold.

In my defense, my grip had been lax as I was purposefully trying not to injure him.

The next thing I knew, Roscoe had me pinned to the ground, air knocked out of me, him hovering above, and my gun digging into my ribs beneath my shirt. He’d been careful to subdue my legs, likely so he wouldn’t end up with a bruised ballsack.

His stare more probing than angry—which I took as a good sign—he said, “I didn’t teach you that. Where’d you learn that?”

Even though I was still coughing, I smiled and rasped, “Since college, take judo.”

He nodded faintly, his eyes moving between mine, looking concerned. “Are you okay? Did I hurt you?”

“No.” Endeavoring to catch my breath, I said, “I took it easy on you because I didn’t want to hurt you either, but I’m an asset, not a liability.”

“You’re definitely an asset.” Roscoe frowned, his gaze dropping to my mouth. “And a distraction,” he said, his voice rough.

“I’m a distraction?” I asked, my words still breathy.

I bucked, but he held me fast.

“Yes. . .” His stare turned inward. “You are most definitely a distraction.”

Even though I’d had plenty of time to recover and we’d been holding still for close to a minute, I was still breathing hard. This might have been because of my lingering irritation. Or, maybe it was because the length of Roscoe’s lean body was lying on mine. He held my hands on either side of my head, our faces even, his mouth just inches away.

Was it insane that I hoped he kissed me?

Yes?

No?

Let’s go with no.

He gave me his eyes again and I saw something there, a battle. He looked undecided, at war with himself, straining against something I couldn’t see.

“Roscoe?” I whispered.

Roscoe closed his eyes, and I thought he was going to let me go, but in the next second his lips descended, capturing my mouth in a tender kiss.

I moaned.

I kissed him back.

That’s what one does when Roscoe Winston kisses one. Moan and kiss. Repeat. Because not doing so would be a travesty.

His hold on my hands slacked, his fingers seeking and threading with mine. He settled his hips between my legs, his form relaxing. The weight of him was different now, warmer somehow. At least I felt warm. I also felt cherished as his tongue sought mine, again tenderly, stroking, causing my abdomen to twist and tighten into delicious knots.

He broke the kiss and a protest died on my lips as his mouth trailed down my jaw to the sensitive skin of my neck, sucking, licking, savoring me. What had felt warm and cherishing heated, and my hips tilted reflexively as he nibbled on my ear, cradling his rapidly growing erection.

We both gasped as his hips rocked in an answering yet inelegant movement. It felt perfect and essential in the moment.

“Oh God.” His hot breath spilled against my jaw, a ragged sigh. “What are we doing?”

“I don’t know, but don’t stop.”

Excerpt:

*Will*

When I saw how spotless the shared living space was, I allowed my curiosity to get the better of me and peeked my head into her bathroom, Rocky dancing around my feet as I entered the space. The counters were covered in woman-products, but the marble surface and sink were free of water spots, and the glass of the shower had been wiped clean.

I glanced at Rocky. He glanced at me. Bemused, I chuckled to myself, about to turn back to the door, and that’s when I spotted it.

A dildo.

A big, Pyrex dildo.

With ridges.

In the shower.

I froze, blinked, and I stared at it, my brain sluggish. Oddly, I had to remind myself to breathe. Likely because I was . . .

I was—

I was shocked.

I shook myself, tearing my eyes from it and rubbing my chest where an odd kind of pang was spreading mild warmth up my neck.

But why was I shocked?

Why should I be surprised?

Despite my never seeing her that way, Josey was a woman and women have needs.

Don’t they?

I hadn’t grown up around women—any women. My mother died when she had my youngest brother. My grandmother died before I was born. I had no sisters. We lived on a farm, way out in BFN Oklahoma.

Girls—women—and their bodies were sacred lands of the unknown to us Moore boys.

Unbidden—completely unbidden—an image of Josey flashed through my mind’s eye. Her full lips parted, her big eyes closed, causing her thick black lashes to catch droplets of water before they dripped over her sharp cheekbones. Her head would be lolled back as shower spray melted bubbles of slippery soap, sliding down her bare skin as they dissolved. Her legs would be parted, and maybe one hand would be braced against the wall of the shower while the other moved in a steady rhythm.

Holding that huge, glass dildo.

I swallowed a sudden rush of salvia and, unable to help myself, I leaned closer to the sex toy, examining it and comparing its size against my own.

I was bigger.

But not by much.

And for some reason, this realization made me instantly hard.

Crap.

Of course I knew Josey was a woman, but until this moment, I’d never really thought of her that way. Not even the tampon-mountain drove the point home. Up until this point, she was someone I liked as a person, someone who made me laugh, who was smart and compassionate, someone around whom I felt completely comfortable. A good—no, a great companion.

She was still all of those things, except—

Except now I’ve pictured her naked.

*****Dee’s Review*****

Five +++ Crazy-Fun Stars********

L.H Cosway and Penny Reid make a fabulous team when they create stories together. I love their books separately, and together they are like peanut butter and chocolate, just wonderful when combined. This fourth book in the rugby series was total fun for me, when I say this, I mean I was laughing throughout the entire read. This book was full of sexy times and belly laughs, which again, for me is the perfect combination.

William Moore is the good guy of the Rugby team. He doesn’t drink much, doesn’t date, is always polite and always a gentleman, but he does have a secret, and it’s threatening to sabotage his perfect career. Josey Kavanagh is a twenty six year old girl that still lives at home. Josey is genuinely happy to live at home with her parents, she lacks social interaction because she’s always with them and her tiny dog Rocky. Her parents are seeing their mistakes in coddling Josey too much, and they tell her it’s time to go on her own and find her own life, outside in the real world.

Will is looking for answers to fix the big scandal that he is causing for the team, and he thinks living alone is just not doing him any favors; he needs a companion, someone honest to a fault that will keep him away from trouble. Josey needs a place to stay, and a job, so when Bryan, Will’s teammate offers the solution of them being roommates, both Will and Josey accept.

These two couldn’t possibly be more opposite. Where Will is quiet and composed, Josey is EXTREMELY talkative and a bit nutty. Will is immediately dazzled by Josey and her weirdness, he actually finds it endearing. Josey who is a bit of a horn-ball is immediately attracted by him but only in a sexual way. Their interactions are pure, unadulterated fun. And then from fun, they turn into red-hot sexy. Both Josey and Will have problems admitting their true feelings and intentions towards one another, but lucky for us the road to a happy ending both literally and figuratively speaking, will be one hell of a crazy, and sexy ride.

Once again I love yet another book in this series. I don’t know anything about Rugby but I’m thinking about moving to Ireland to study the players, I mean the game, the game…*wink after reading this wonderful series.

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****4.5 STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Authors}

I had no thoughts of rules or boundaries, just of Josey. Rightness, bone-deep satisfaction as I lay on her, our bodies still joined. Maybe it was madness, but a visceral sense of belonging warmed me, feverish in its intensity. Not just that I belonged with her—here, now—but that I belonged to her, with no limitations on place and time.

The ”Rugby” series is one of my favorites. I truly love the individual works by both L.H. Conway and Penny Reid, but when they write together, it’s pretty fantastic. Each Heroine in this series seems to be quirky but it only adds to their endearing personalities. Josey and Will’s story will start off a bit unconventionally but I am sure that fans of these authors and this series will really enjoy this one.

William Moore is somewhat socially awkward. He’s the most reserved and quiet member of his Rugby team but unfortunately for him, he has become the center of a huge scandal. He has a secret fetish that has been discovered by the gossip magazines. Will has been burned badly in his past and it’s made him avoid intimacy and relationships with women. The only way he relieves some of his sexual tension is by watching consenting married couples have sex. He doesn’t take part and he never pays to watch, and so to him, he sees it all as being safe. When his teammate Bryan was living with him, he didn’t have any time to even think about his voyeuristic needs. But the moment he was living alone, the silence and loneliness had him turning to his kinky side again.

Josey Kavanagh has just been evicted from her family home by her parents. They’re also told her that they will no longer be paying for her veterinary school tuition. Lost and bewildered she ends up staying over at her good friend Eilish’s house. Eilish and Bryan are the couple from the previous book ”The Cad and The Coed”. Josey is a bit of a social misfit. She often says the most inappropriate things at inopportune moments because she tends to ramble to avoid awkward moments of silence. She’s a pretty lovable character and although I had really loved Bryan in his story, I kind of disliked him in this one because he was often rude and spoke badly of Josey. BUT, he is the one who gets the bright idea to have Will hire her as his keeper and roommate. The team is trying to salvage Will’s reputation and since his voyeurism need disappears when he has a roommate, Bryan suggests that Josey takes on that role. Josey jumps at the chance because she gets a place to live and a salary which solves all of her current problems.

Their first encounter is a little awkward but from the start, Will senses that Josey is perfect for the job. They enter into an easy friendship and their living situation turns out to be very agreeable for the both of them. But soon Josey and Will are feeling more than friendly and it rattles them. The fears that they each carry deep inside have them doubting anything good or lasting can develop between them.

When Will and Josey finally admit their mutual attraction to each other and somehow agree that a serious relationship would never work out between them, they both agree to a ”friends with benefits” arrangement while they spend two weeks in Australia where Will and his teammates are training for the upcoming season.

Once these two get a taste of each other, it’ll be hard to deny that they’ve got something pretty monumental building between them. Can they go back to being just friends and roommates when they return to Ireland? Or will their two weeks of passion end up ruining their perfect living situation at home and ultimately tearing them apart forever?

Here are my overall ratings

BLOG TOUR – MARRIAGE OF INCONVENIENCE (Knitting in the City, #7) by Penny Reid

MOI BT BANNER.jpg

Marriage of Inconvenience, an all new romantic comedy standalone in the USA Today bestselling, Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid, is available NOW!

MOI copy

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.

Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece.

Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought?

Excerpt:

Staring at his chin, because I couldn’t quite lift my eyes any higher, I cleared my throat. “Should we get ready for bed?”

“Sure,” he said, his voice a rumble. Dan’s eyes were on me, I felt the weight of them.

My hands came to the hem of my skirt and I hesitated, feeling winded for some reason. Sneaking a glance at him, I immediately wished I hadn’t. His gaze was watchful, but it was also unmistakably hot in a way that seemed at once both avaricious and accusatory. The vice tightened around my lungs.

Kiss him! Just freaking kiss him! You want numbered steps? Fine. You kiss him- check. He kisses you back- check. Then you make out- check. Check the boxes.

I licked my lips, balling my hands into fists at my sides again, preparing to follow my hasty list.

But then he said, “Undress me.”

My breath caught. On instinct, my eyes lifted and collided with his in much the same way our bodies had collided at the top of the stairs just moments ago. Jarring. Startling. Thrilling. This time I couldn’t look away because this time I was falling. He made no move to catch me.

“What? What did you say?”

His eyes narrowed, which served only to increase the intensity of his gaze from smolder to inferno. “Take my clothes off.”

I stared at him, licking my lips again, and shaking my head. That wasn’t one of my steps.

Lifting my chin, I moved to kiss him. He leaned to the side, evading me even as his eyes dropped to my mouth.

“Take off my shirt and I’ll give you a kiss.” He’d used his naughty-secret voice.

An explosion of heat erupted in my belly, and now I was hot all over. I couldn’t figure out if the heat was embarrassment or arousal or both.

He didn’t give me a chance to figure it out. His hands lifted and he undid his cuffs; then they moved to the top button of his shirt.

“You better take over,” he said darkly, “or else you’re not getting that kiss.”

SB_BANNER.jpg

Marriage of Inconvenience, an all new romantic comedy standalone in the USA Today bestselling, Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid, is LIVE!

MOI copy.jpg

*****Dee’s Review*****

FIVE ~Dan Is Mine Stars*****

A lot of emotions I’m feeling right now with this book. First, excitement, because I’ve been wanting to read Kat and Dan’s story FOREVER, and let me tell you, it was even better than I could ever imagine. I’ve been a die-hard fan of this series since the first book came out and I’ve loved them all, a lot, but Marriage Of Inconvenience is truly my favorite, EVER!

The only way I can describe what this book meant to me is by saying it was, a total unicorn of a read, so special, so unique, so unbelievably amazing. Kat was a heroine like no other, and what I loved the most about her, were her flaws and insecurities, and she had a lot. But Dan with his love, patience and the most precious care started to peel every, single layer in what was the onion of Kat’s issues. Their relationship is the most beautiful, and even the most hilarious romance I’ve read in a long time. Penny simply outdid herself with this one, it was truly a spectacular read. (Insert fireworks)

So… Remember when the whole knitting gang went to Las Vegas, and tons of crazy things happened? We knew Kat and Dan “The Security Man” had shared a night together and that something has happened between them that nobody else knew. So in this book, we get the very juicy piece of information that explains what brought them together for a night and then push them apart for two years.

Kat, as it turns out, is the heiress of a Pharmaceutical empire. Her past is one she doesn’t often like to think or talk about, and her current mission in life is to overcome everything she once used to be. She has been preparing to take her place, and take charge of the family business but her heinous cousin is concocting an awful plan to take from Kat, what is rightfully hers. Kat needs help, but she also has a crazy plan and lucky for her, Dan is the first in line to help her.

All the ladies in the Knitting In The City series feel like they are close friends of mine. I feel like we, as readers have gone through so much with these characters, and they are like a little fictional family. These ladies are always there for each other, each with their own special kind of love and talent and they just make each story, even more precious. The men too. At some point or another throughout the years, I’ve fantasized about either dating, marrying, or engaging in naughty panty parties with one or all of them at some point. But Dan takes the cake, he is hands down my absolute favorite. I love the way he talks, the way he looks, his hilarious humor; I especially love how he is still scared of his mom. I mean, I LOVED EVERY. SINGLE. THING about Dan. He is my Dan the Man, my Man!!!! Sigh!!! I could talk and think about him all day…

This book comes packed with a ton of laughter, tons of beautiful romance and a very healthy dose of sexy. This book will go down in my TBR history as the best book I could have read. I was having an unusually hard week and this romance made it all better. I kept having to go back and re-read my highlighted notes in order to relive all the beautiful emotions this book was giving me. I’ve actually decided to buy myself a hard copy to always carry it with me as a guide to help myself find happy when I most need it.

So do yourself a favor and give this book or any of the other previous books in this utterly awesome series. By the time you’ve read them all, you too will feel, like you have seven new crazy friends, that will stay with you forever…

*****5++++++++++ STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

”I have to tell you my limits because you have to trust me. So you have to know…you mean something to me. It’s never going to be a finish line with you or something to cross off a list. It’s—I want—I need—it to be everything.”

Almost on an everyday basis, I wish that there was more time in the day so that I could get to all of the books out there that I am sure I am missing out on. This is a serious conflict for us avid readers. I read ”Neanderthal Meets Human”several years ago and somehow I never had a chance to get back to this series until now. I wish that I had read all the previous books because I truly feel like I missed out by not getting to spend more time with these incredible characters. To say that I LOVED ”MARRIAGE OF INCONVENIENCE” is just the tip of the iceberg. I was in book heaven with this one! It had the perfect blend of romantic comedy, intrigue, action, and of course, the yummy steamy bits! There’s a new book boyfriend who has swept me off my feet and I am sure when you all read this, Dan O’Malley is going to steal your hearts!

Kat is the sole heir to a Pharmaceutical empire worth billions. Her mother suffers from an extreme case of catatonic schizophrenia and has been institutionalized for many years. Her father has been suffering from Alzheimer’s and has also been hospitalized for the past three years. Growing up, Kat and her father didn’t have much of a relationship. She was sent away to boarding schools and he was always watching for clues that she may be succumbing to the same sickness her mother had. During her teenage years, Kat felt the need to rebel. She went down a dark road filled with countless casual hook-ups, alcohol, and even drugs. Eventually, she got herself back on track and cleaned up her life, but the damage was done and some of her family considered her to be unstable. Caleb, her cousin, who is currently CEO of her parent’s company is an evil ‘SOB’, who wants to gain access to her parent’s assets, so he plans to prove that Kat is mentally incapacitated so that he can become her legal guardian. This will enable him to gain access to her inheritance. Kat’s legal counsel has been her parent’s lawyer since before she was born and he advises her to get married to someone trustworthy which will thwart her cousin’s attempt to gain guardianship.

Kat goes to her best-friend Steven, but he’s just recently started dating his boyfriend and suggests that she ask Dan O’Malley ‘aka’ Dan the Security Man, who has been the secret object of her desires for over two years. The two had a “moment” in Vegas where things could have turned romantic between them but a stupid misunderstanding wound up keeping them apart. Kat has no idea that while she has secretly been swooning over Dan, he’s also been hiding his true feelings for her too.

To say that Dan is dumbstruck when Kat proposes is putting it mildly. Kat was certain that he wouldn’t agree to her proposal because she really believes that she isn’t good enough for him. But what she doesn’t realize is that she has been a walking fantasy for him for far too long. Dan jumps at the chance to become her husband. Deep down he’s hoping that feelings will develop between them and maybe it won’t have to end up being a “pretend” marriage, and Kat is definitely wishing for the same.

The romantic tension that builds between Dan and Kat throughout the progression of the story was giving me endless goosebumps. Every kiss and every brush of his fingertips across any part of Kat’s body was driving me insane. I got worked up when he merely kissed the back of her hand!! This man had serious game!! What made it even better was the fact that he truly was a goner for Kat. I loved that Dan somehow always knew when Kat was struggling internally over what was happening between them and he would make sure to express what he was truly feeling about her so as to leave no doubt. It was clear from the start of their marriage that this was going to turn into something everlasting.

Both Dan and Kat have deep rooted insecurities about relationships and added on top of that for Kat is her inability to be intimate which stems from her wild teenage years. Their pasts and dysfunctional families played a huge part. While they try to navigate through their new life as a married couple and deal with issues that affect their relationship, there are also multiple outside threats that they have to contend with that make up the action and intrigue portion of the story.

Here are my overall ratings:

Hero: 5+++++
Heroine: 5
Plot: 5
Angst: 4
Steam: 5
Chemistry Between Heros & Heroine: 5

SURPRISE – SCENES FROM THE HALLWAY by Penny Reid

Scenes from the Hallway, an all new novella from USA Today bestselling author Penny Reid, is LIVE and as a special Valentine’s Day gift from Penny it’s FREE!

SFTH.jpg

Synopsis

From the USA TODAY Bestselling romantic comedy series, ‘Scenes from the Hallway,’ Knitting in the City #6.5

You know who I am.

I swear too much, I crack too many jokes, and I got a thing for Kat Tanner; a messy thing, a distracting thing, a getting-in-the-way-of-everything thing; a thing that makes being in the same room with the woman torture. Sometimes it’s the good kind. Mostly, it’s not.

What you don’t know is how it all started. You don’t know how we met, you might not know what happened in Vegas (or the morning after), and you definitely don’t know what happened after that.

You want to know the story before the story? Well . . . here you go.

But be careful what you ask for. As I’ve discovered the hard way, you might not like it.

‘Scenes from the Hallway’ is a companion short prequel/short story (11k words) for the upcoming book, ‘Marriage of Inconvenience,’ and includes the first 3 chapters of the soon to be released novel! (‘Marriage of Inconvenience’ releases March 6, 2018.)

WARNING This short story contains a lot of cussing. Do not download or read if you dislike curse words in novels. WARNING
