SYNOPSIS:

His name is Beat, and I should hate him.

Bound, blindfolded and bruised, I’m tied in his basement, waiting for the men who stripped me from clothes and humanity to collect his debt to them. Me.

His name is Nate and I should hate him, but I don’t.

I’m not supposed to know his real name, even worse, I’m not supposed to care. He is nothing to me but means to an end. The plan is simple: break free, collect the pieces of my broken soul, kill the bastards and run away.

His name is Nathaniel Thomas Vela, and I’ve never seen his face, though I hear that it’s beautiful.

Behind the rugged and handsome exterior, there’s a quiet murderer, a killer who thinks guns are for pussies and ends people with his bare hands.

His name doesn’t matter, neither does his face, but what does matter is my heart. And right now, sadly, it’s his.

Outstanding ovation for Blood To Dust. L.J Shen kidnapped me from my life with her new book. For days I did nothing but dream and obsess about Nate and Prescott’s story. I felt high, drunk, and overwhelmed by the thrill of this book.

Bravo!!!! Another L.J Shen book that goes to the best of 2016 bookshelf.

19705012._SX540_

Prescott Burlington-Smyth is a woman who’s lost everything in the hands of the man she used to love. She grew up with a silver spoon, anything she wanted she had, except, protection from her family. Greed was something her parents had in spades, and it was what ultimately took the Burlington-Smyth’s to their demise.

Even though Prescott was stripped of everything she once had, including her hopes and dreams, she refuses to be a victim. Instead, she became a warrior, a fighter, whose only purpose in life is to seek revenge against those who hurt her. Prescott is smart, and she had a lot of success in her mission, but as we start this book she is captured again, and taken to a basement to await her new punishment from the villains who are back to collect what they think Prescott still owes them.

19705013._SX540_

One of her captors, is a contracted thug, someone who is also in debt to the ruthless men Prescott hates. Nathaniel Thomas Vega, AKA Nate, AKA Beat. Nate has been both blessed and cursed by incredible beauty, his looks are impossible not to admire, stare at, and fall for. But in the dark world where he grew up, looks mean nothing but a weakness. He is poor, a convicted felon, and also someone who owes his life to a terrible man, who has him watching a beautiful girl in his own basement.

Desperate to escape her captivity Prescott tries to learn everything about her captor, his moves, his likes, his weaknesses. Beat is not a nice man, but he is showing her kindness and respect while in captivity. Little by little his peaceful demeanor turns out to be the only thing that can calm Prescott’s storm.

Beautiful words, extreme lust and a tiny thread of hope, will bring Nate and Prescott together. They form an alliance, and together come up with a plan to destroy the people who are keeping them from living their lives free. Their fiery connection will turn into love, and Nate and Prescott will go together on a bloody chase against time. Will they conquer and find freedom or will they die trying?

Reading this book had me burning from the inside out with lust and heavy emotions. Fast-paced and brilliantly written,Blood To Dust is an unforgettable read that will take you on a thrilling journey from which you will never want to come back. Simply AMAZING!!!

Broken people do things better; we learned how to make it in life without the missing parts other people have. Because when you’re in the dark, you appreciate everything that shines.

This story grabs a hold of the reader from the start and was one hell of a wild ride that had me on pins and needles almost to the very end. LJ Shen’s books have been receiving tons of praise all over Goodreads and I decided that I needed to see what all the hype was about. What I have learned is that LJ Shen’s writing is exquisite. Her characters are deeply flawed and yet incredibly beautiful. This is not a pretty tale of a hearts and flowers romance and neither the Hero nor the Heroine are even close to being law abiding citizens but you can’t help but root for their HEA.

Prescott Burlington-Smyth finds herself in a world of trouble. She’s pissed off some dangerous men and they’re out to make her pay. She did have a motive for her actions. These men brutally raped, sodomized and beat her. What she has been through has left a gaping hole in her heart. But now she’s been kidnapped and held captive by her enemies and must wait for the man who once had her love to come and deliver her final punishment. Prescott aka “Pea” is thrown in a dark and moldy basement. She only gets about 20 minutes of human interaction when one of her captors, Beat, comes down to bring her food and allows her a bathroom break. There’s something different about this man who hides his face behind a mask. She can see it in his eyes and so she plans to win him over in hopes he’ll help her escape.

Nate Vela aka “Beat”, is an ex-convict. He spent several years in prison for murder. While on the inside he crosses paths with some of the unsavory characters that want Prescott dead. They end up helping Beat out while in prison and now he’s in their debt. This is the reason he’s currently holding Pea captive in his basement. Beat may have no qualms about killing someone when necessary but he draws the line at harming women. This man is beyond beautiful and women tend to throw themselves at his feet but he’s never had any feelings of attraction for any woman until Pea came along.

b2d bleed

As they spend more time with each other, Pea is able to break through Beat’s rough exterior. When they finally get down to the schmexy, it is rough and brutal, and somehow it’s just what Pea needs. They go from Captor and Captive to partners in crime. Pea and Beat aka “Tanaka Cockburn” and “Christopher Delaware” are going to seek vengeance upon the three men who nearly destroyed Pea. Once they are successful, they’ll each go their separate ways.

These two were like a modern day Bonnie and Clyde but so much more. The story gets extremely intense during the second half, I nearly died from all the heart-stopping action. Through all the darkness and bloodshed, a true love story also unfolds. I only hoped that these two could defy such insurmountable odds.

BLOOD TO DUST is available now!! A definite must read! I will be adding LJ Shen to my automatic must-read author list!

AP new - excerpt.jpg

“Food.” He kicks the sole of my boot. So it is him. Somehow, it makes me feel a little less scared. He didn’t want me here, and didn’t slap me across the face. Unfortunately, in my world, this qualifies him as some sort of a black knight.

I hear the clank of a plastic plate being thrown in my direction on the floor, but don’t make a move for it.

“You deaf?” he asks.

“You stupid?” I smart off. “I’m blindfolded and tied. How the hell am I supposed to get to this food? The power of telepathy?”

He offers me another grunt, and I immediately regret snapping at him. I feel his fingers working the black cloth that’s tying my hands together, that peachy breath on my face again.

Once I’m free, he bends down, his warmth engulfing me, and places the plate in my hands.

“What’s for dinner?” I lick my injured lips.

“Whiskey-glazed steak with a side of wine-tossed asparagus.” He lets out a sniffle before adding flatly, “Wait, my bad. It’s just a peanut butter sandwich.”

“That’s better. I’m vegetarian.”

“I’ll let our chef know.” He offers me his own brand of sarcasm, his voice already descending. I realize that he’s about to climb back up. I can’t let that happen. Who knows when he’ll check on me again? The prospect of holding my pee a minute longer is nothing short of tormenting.

“Wait!” I launch forward, crawling on the floor toward his voice. I don’t hear anything, so I continue.

“I really need to take a shower, wash off all this blood. And I really, really need to pee.” I shuffle my way back to the corner, taking a small bite off my sandwich, my teeth brushing against my fingers. “Please?”

I feel his palm pressing flat against the wall I’m leaning on. I swear it moves a little from the impact.

“Finish your sandwich. Make it quick.”

I wolf down my dinner before he grabs my hand and leads me up the stairs. He stalks closely behind, and even though it’s taking me forever to climb up the narrow staircase, he keeps his grunt-count to a respectable minimum.

Leading me to the bathroom by the arm, he throws the door open and we both walk into the tiny room. Still blindfolded, I feel the cold sink stabbing at my lower back, but the warmth of his proximity keeps me from shivering.

“I need my privacy.” I lick my lips, feeling him everywhere. Not only is Beat physically big, he is also somewhat of a human furnace. I swear he radiates enough heat to photosynthesize a whole forest. I guess it’s good, because I always know when he’s around. But also bad, because why would it matter? It’s not like I can fight him in any way.

“Dream on, Country Club.” Another grunt.

“Please.” My voice breaks. Usually, I’m counting on my caramel blonde hair and big Disney-animal eyes—which he unfortunately can’t see right now—to get me out of trouble. I have a feeling this guy is harder to crack. “Just lock me in and stand guard outside. What can I do? Arm myself with a bar of soap? Try and break free through the sink’s hole?”

Is he going to buy it?

Is he sensitive?

Is he hard-nosed?

Maybe he’s both. He’s got some serious codes going on—no beating women, no manhandling your victim—yet he essentially agreed to lock me in here. Then there’s his tone and body language. Peaceful. Like he hasn’t got a care in the world, which couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve known him for a few short hours and I’m already privy to the fact that he was an inmate in San Dimas, has killed, owes Godfrey a favor and has the Aryan Brotherhood on his tail.

“Be warned,”—his peachy breath tickles my nose—“when people are bad to me, I’m worse. Don’t tempt my demons.”

“Be warned”—his peachy breath tickles my nose—“when people are bad to me, I’m worse. Don’t tempt my demons.”

Beat takes off my blindfold, but he’s not as thoughtless as to show me his face. His black tee is pulled over his head, revealing a tattooed six-pack. Even his fingertips are full of blues and blacks. Yet, one side of his body is completely ink-free. Massive, menacing…and as much as I hate to admit it, attractive.

Sweet Statute of Liberty, if I need to screw one of them in the name of freedom, please let it be him and not the chunky tattooist.

Beat can still see me through the fabric of his shirt, but before I get the chance to make out his face, he dashes out of the bathroom and locks the door from the outside with a key.

“You’ve got fifteen minutes to do everything. Pee, shit, shower, get dressed. Starting now.”

I don’t argue or waste a second. I jump into the shower and pee as the stream of gurgling water splashes over my body. My bladder is burning with release, and so are the blistering fresh wounds Seb decorated me with. Slowly, I’m starting to feel a little better, think a little clearer.

The water is hot and violent against my strained muscles. There’s only one bar of soap—I’m pretty sure Beat and Ink are sharing it (I’m guessing they’re roomies by the two worn-out towels on the rack). Not very sanitary, but hygiene is a luxury I cannot afford right now.

I scrub my body and keep the water running as I try to pry open the overhead rust-stained window next to the showerhead. I stand on my toes, peeking outside, blinking away disbelief as the sight in front of me registers. A teenager with a beanie zig-zags his way on a bike in the middle of the road, the electric wires above his head tangled with shoelaces and sneakers. Beyond the sight of shotgun houses, wilting porches and the echoes of desperate, barking dogs…a Taco Bell.

Taco Bell!

I recognize the branch. I’m in Stockton. Whose streets I know, whose crack heads I studied, whose language of hardship and adversity I speak fluently.

I study my surroundings. The house I’m trapped in is a simple one-story, and the house right in front of it is probably an identical bungalow. It looks deserted, so yelling will get me nowhere other than on Beat and Ink’s shit list.

But I’m guessing by the sound of traffic and the location of the fast food restaurant that we’re close to El Dorado, one of Stockton’s main streets.

Knowing where I am will work in my favor when I run away.

And I will run away. One way or the other. With or without Beat’s help.

I always land on my feet.

I broke free from Callum, Godfrey and Sebastian. Getting rid of these two should be a walk in the park.

Beat’s fist slams against the door three times, then unlocks the door from the outside.

“Yo, Silver Spoon. Your time’s up.”

“Just one second,” I call, turning off the faucet and stepping outside. I reach for one of the manly dark towels and cover myself up as I squat down to pick up my gray dress.

Hold on a minute.

Manly…Dark…Towels.

They might have a shaving razor. Holy hell, they might have a weapon in here.

I start flinging drawers open, still wrapped in a towel, desperately trying to find something to injure Beat with. I don’t even care if he hears. Give me a razor and I will dice this 6’5 Goliath to pieces the size of Barbacoa. Talent can be outworked and rage can outweigh size. That’s the motto I live by.

Beat bangs on the door again, and it wails on its hinges.

“Hey…you,” he grunts. He doesn’t even know my name. “If you make me open this door myself, you’ll be fucking sorry.”

I ignore him. He can’t rape or harm me. Godfrey made that clear. Honestly? I’m not scared of him that much. He’s been nothing but compassionate to me so far, in his own, angry, Stockton way. Damn it, though. They have absolutely nothing in these drawers. Empty, empty, empty. What’s wrong with these men? Do they not live here, or did they think about this scenario beforehand? Probably the latter. I’m just about to turn around and pick up my dress when the door swings open and Guy Fawkes’s face greets me again, bat-shit crazy galore. The drawers are all open. I threw most of their contents on the floor in my desperate search for a weapon.

This is not looking good for me.

This man is going to kill me…and for once in my life, I don’t feel like putting up a fight anymore.

“You don’t get a say in this shit,” Ink announces with borrowed authority. I can hear the uncertainty leaking from him. He’s what I call an easy job. If it were just him watching over me, I would have been dancing in Iowan cornfields far away from here by now, Sebastian and Godfrey’s heads tucked in that Nike bag.

“You make me uncomfortable.” I yank my arm away.

“What, and the other guy makes you warm and fuzzy?” He sounds genuinely offended.

Beat inches closer behind me, and I feel the heat of his body drifting into mine. He’s close. Hot-jock-leaning-against-your-locker close. It’s going to be hard to bypass someone his size.

“You think I’m nice?” His breath moves through the plastic of his mask, tickling my ear. I shudder down to my toes. His mouth smells like peach. How bad can a guy who smells like a peach be?

“Nice-r.” I clear my throat, my eyes still trained on Ink in front of me. Ink shakes his head, indicating that I’m dead wrong. The air becomes chilly. Why hadn’t I noticed it’s so chilly?

Because it’s not. It’s August in California, and I’m cold because I’m frightened.

“Let’s test your theory. I’m going to touch you now. Move without permission, and I’m breaking your arm.”

My busted lower lip splits open again as I scowl at his threat. He definitely looks like a guy who makes good on his threats.

“Okay.” I lick my blood, my voice tender.

Beat kicks my legs open and brings my arms up, patting me down dryly, like airport security. His rough fingers stroke the curves of my shoulders as he moves down from my skull to my outer breasts, circling them lazily. Down to my stomach…lower to my tensed inner thighs, pushing the fabric of my mini dress away to make room for his warm paws.

Every muscle in my body is ready to plow forward, to run away, to try and hurt him; the memory of every experience I’ve had that started this way demands for me to take action. But this…it doesn’t feel like a violation. The sour taste of bile has yet to explode in my mouth.

His hands move down my legs, stroking my ankles…then he stops.

“Got something inside?” He squats down, hooking one of his thumbs into my ankle boot. His masked face is eye level with my pelvis, and warmth spreads along my bones like hot wax.

“No,” I lie. There’s still a slight chance he won’t check.

But he checks.

Beat jerks my boot out and a Swiss army knife falls with a clank on the concrete pavement. I let out a sigh and drop my head. Shit.

Happy thoughts.

Frozen yoghurt with Preston down the local mall.

Curling up on the egg-swing with a Mia Sheridan book.

Water lilies blooming over the artificial pond in the Burlington-Smyth’s garden.

A genuine smile from a stranger.

Beat stands up slowly, his gleeful mask zeroing on my face. It all looks like a scene from a horror movie.

And I’m the victim.

*****Dee’s Review*****

5++++++RED HOT Stars************

(ARC kindly provided by author in exchange for an honest review)

I love discovering new authors, and last year I read the debut novel by L.J Shen and I was very impressed with her work. She writes the kind of stories I like to read, strong and complex characters, passionate plots, with a hint of humor. Now, with this new book I was in total awe. Sparrow had all the components I look for in a story and more. I fell head over heels in love with Troy and Sparrow’s story. This book is what I like to call, book-crack, totally addictive!!!!

We start the book meeting Sparrow Raynes as she stares back at her reflection in the mirror on her wedding day. She is marrying the extremely sexy and dangerous Troy Brennan. She’s supposed to say I do to the man people call “The Fixer”, he makes situations and people disappear. He lives a life of extreme chaos and he owns the streets of South Boston.

Sparrow can hardly believe Troy Brennan bullied her into marrying him. He could have any woman he wants, why her? She’s just a simple girl. Sparrow is not a fan of fashion or style. She’s happiest wearing a pair of boyfriend jeans and sneakers. What she is full of, are dreams and goals that she wants to fulfill far away from the town where she’s been an invisible girl, until the day this mountain of a man showed up at her house and stormed through her life, changing everything.

Troy Brennan’s father was one of Boston’s Irish mob kings, Troy grew up in the life of luxury and crime. After his father’s murder, his views and priorities in life have changed, and just like Sparrow, he has many goals, but his might require bloodshed by others to be fulfilled.

Sparrow and Troy start their arrangement hating each other, but soon a sizzling passion develops and their fights become passionate and the interactions turn burning hot. Once these two give into their deepest desires, the rules of the game they’ve been playing start to change and the flames caused by their love will scorch every single page of this novel.

I loved Sparrow’s character so much, even though she was married to a scary, sexy mobster, she never showed him weakness, she fought him tooth and nail. She is smart, and sassy, a total firecracker type of heroine. Troy was my favorite type of Alpha Male, a bit of an anti-hero, that sexy man that you will love to hate. These two characters made a deadly combination, taking us for one super wild ride. So, buckle up, put your hands up in the air and be ready for the thrill!!!

Sparrow is a standalone novel, told from both the MC’s POV and it releases on March 8th. Make sure to pre-order to take advantage of the amazing price.
