REVIEW – SOMEONE ELSE’S OCEAN by Kate Stewart

SYNOPSIS

The first time I met Ian Kemp in the sparkling blue waters of St. Thomas, I was six years old and we shared a summer beneath the stars.

The second time I met Ian Kemp, he was a shell of the boy I once knew. Turbulent and infuriating, he refused my friendship at every turn. Like me, he was a casualty of life’s cruelty, but we were planets apart.

We’d both sought refuge on the island, hoping to find our anchor. Instead, we found each other and managed to reclaim our stars…until we both got swept away.

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****FIVE+++++++STARS*****
{Beta Read}

I found the one person in the world who understood me and loved me wholly as I was. Love stories aren’t always perfect. They can wreak havoc on the heart and distort the soul. I’d gotten lost in love and found the reality at the end of it where I now lived in the truth. Not all love stories come with happy endings.

Kate Stewart truly is one seriously talented author. At this point, I come to expect perfection from her and she has more than delivered that with ”SOMEONE ELSE’S OCEAN”! I am so in LOVE with this story and I know romance readers everywhere will feel the same! Ian and Koti just might be Kate’s HOTTEST couple to date. Their chemistry SIZZLES!!

Ian and Koti met many years ago on the island of St. Thomas, where their parents owned adjacent vacation homes. Even though there was an eight-year age gap between them, the two managed to become the best of friends. But life took them in different directions and it’s been nearly twenty years since they’ve seen each other–until now. Ian’s world has been rocked to its core and he’s run off to St. Thomas to do some soul-searching.

Koti went through her own soul-searching journey the previous year and has made St. Thomas her home. When she sees Ian going through rough times, she tries to comfort her old friend, but Ian is angry at the world and behaves unbelievably rude towards Koti. The two spend a lot of time bickering and getting into heated arguments but little by little Koti is able to break through Ian’s barriers and old childhood friends start to become something more.

Ian has been hurt by his Ex’s deceitful actions and they share custody of a charming teenaged daughter. His life isn’t free of entanglements and his time on the island has a set expiration date. Home is where his daughter is. But while they both know that their time together is due to end they just can’t seem to stay away from each other.

No man has ever captured Koti’s heart until Ian came back into her life. She never believed in love until Ian showed her how beautiful life could be when you found your true soul mate. But her life is very much planted in St. Thomas. How can these two find happiness when there are thousands of miles between them?

The level of angst in this story nearly destroyed my heart. And I guarantee you’ll want to shake the hell out of both Ian and Koti for their stupid stubbornness. I’m so crazy about this story. Just when I think Kate can’t top her last book, she goes and proves me wrong. I am amazed at how her writing gets even more exquisite. I literally highlighted nearly 75% of this book! Her words touch my heart and soul!

Here are my overall ratings

Hero: 5
Heroine: 5
Plot: 5
Angst: 5
Steam: 5++++
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5++++

SOMEONE ELSE’S OCEAN releases on July 31st! Make sure you add this your TBRs! This is an absolutely perfect summer romance!!

*****Dee’s Review*****

Five Beautiful Stars*****

A standing ovation to author Kate Stewart for writing this phenomenal story. The beautiful beach setting, the lovely and multidimensional characters, and the intense passion in almost every chapter make Someone Else’s Ocean an epic summer read.

Koti Vaughn comes from an important family in New York. She used to be part of the high ranks in society, complete with a high powered job, and a killer wardrobe. From the outside anyone could see she had it all, but at what price?

After one faithful event, Koti was done with that New York life, she packed one suitcase, and left everything and everyone behind. She moved to the one place where she remembered being happy last, the beautiful island of St. Thomas.

Her life didn’t magically change, but she has the life she truly wants. Candles and wine, ocean view, and a best friend that is also her savior.

Koti works with her best friend Jasmine managing a vacation rental company. Her neighbors house is one of the homes she manages and when she notices that their son shows up unannounced ruining all the previous rental agreements , she’s ready to move him to a hotel. All that before she sees the utter devastation in his eyes.

Ian is recently divorced, his pride and joy is his daughter Ella, everything he does is for her. He was married for fourteen years to a woman who made him sacrifice a lot in his life for her, and now he discovers that she’s been hiding the most awful secret that might destroy him for once and for all.

Like Koti, Ian too fled to the island looking for peace, for answers, for clarity. They knew each other when they were kids and spent one summer by the beach, but now the only thing they have in common are , heavy emotional baggage.

Their friendship rekindles once again, and quickly new feelings are born between them. The beach, the moon and the stars will be the witnesses for a passionate affair that they both know can have no future. But the heart wants what it wants, and even if these two characters fight it, love and heart break will light up the beaches of their beloved island.

My favorite thing about this story was the father/ daughter aspect. Ian was not only sexy, tormented, brooding and dirty mouthed, but he was also the most caring father to his daughter. Like Koti he wasn’t perfect, and I loved that too. Kate Stewart created these characters with as many flaws as beauty, humanizing them in such a way that the story felt raw and real at every turn. What a magnificent story. Another thing I loved while reading this book was Koti’s and Jasmine’s friendship, it added the perfect amount of humor and sensitivity to an already great plot, and let’s not forget about cute Disco, the puppy, she was the star of the book, LOVE HER!!!!

Excerpt

Thwack.
Thwack.
Thwack.

“Fack!” It was another one of the hundreds of curses that erupted from the Kemp kitchen.

With wide eyes, I watched the wood fly across the porch and onto the sand and heard another loud crash as I stalked the house next door with my phone pressed to my ear.

“So how is my son?” His mother asked as I saw more of Rowan Kemp’s kitchen fly over the railing, off the porch, and into the sand. “Is he adjusting well?”

“Damnit! Oh, fack your motha,” Ian’s voice rang out in frustration. Giggling, I covered the mouthpiece of the phone as another cabinet door hit the sand. He’d been at it for a few hours. It started with an explosive phone call that I managed to avoid mostly due to my taking cover in the shower and ended with a bang.

“He… is. It looks like he’s remodeling the kitchen.”

In a flash, Ian stood on the porch only in shorts, his chest heaving, a bottle of the red in his hand. He studied the wood in the sand before he glanced at my house. I ducked out of his line of sight and answered her before more banging started. “He’s fine.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful news. Maybe you could put him on the phone?”

More growling ensued and then a clear, “Damn you! EISH!”

“Well, at the moment, I think it would be impossible, he’s in the midst of demolition.”

I cringed at the ripping sound and poked my head out of my screen door just as he hurled more wood over the railing.

“You know he’s always been so good at things like that. He built his father a beautiful bookshelf for his study.”

“That’s wonderful,” I said, as Ian unloaded an entire can of lighter fluid on the discarded wood. I raced around the bottom floor of my house and collected every fire extinguisher I had before I sat them next to my front door. Seconds later I heard the whoosh of the wood go up in flames. The rising inferno seemed to fuel him as he added more of his mother’s kitchen to it piece by piece.

Rowan went on, speaking of her pride and joy. “From boy scouts all the way through college, my boy excelled at everything he did. Honor student, swimming, tennis. I had to beat the women away with a stick.”

Ian chose that moment to snap another cabinet door in half over his knee and used his empty wine bottle to bat it into the burning pile.

“You don’t say.”

“Oh, yes, he was such a ladies’ man before he met Tara, his ex-wife.”

Only mildly prepared, I walked out onto my porch at the same time Ian returned to it. He had several photo books in his hand. Rowan whispered in my ear as if he could hear her. “I was never really that fond of her, she seemed a little cold compared to his warmth.”

Ian pulled pictures from the books and began to burn them one by one. Something in my chest split as he walked around Rowan Kemp’s burning kitchen cabinets, tossing away what I was sure were irreplaceable pictures.

He had lost his shit. It was, without a doubt, Ian’s doomsday.

“Don’t!” I screamed from where I stood.

Ian ignored me as he tossed an entire book into the fire before shaking another so that the pictures fed the flames.

“Koti? What is it?” Rowan said anxiously on the phone.

“Oh nothing, I was just…”

“Is everything okay?”

“Oh, fine,” I said, as I paced the porch watching her son destroy his mother’s memories. He must have found the pictures in the linen closet. The Kemps had very few of their own things in the house.

“Rowan, I’m going to ask him if he needs any help.”

“Okay,” she said hesitantly. “But please ask him to ring me.”

“Will do.” I was already running toward the small bonfire just as Ian tossed another picture into it.

“What are you doing!?”

“Privacy,” he said through thick lips. “That’s all I asked for.”

“Kind of hard to ignore you, Ian. Since you’ve gone all Tom Hanks Castaway—me man, me make fire!” I reached for the picture in his hand as he tossed it in. I watched it burn. It was a shot of a woman in her wedding dress who I assumed was Tara. She looked beautiful as she smiled at her groom. I was only able to admire Ian in a well-fitted tux for seconds before the fire engulfed the photo.

Jesus, what could have happened?

“Ian, if you want to talk about it…”

He picked up another book and took a few pictures out shoving them into his pocket before he tossed it into the pile.

“Leave.”

“Please stop. You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Blazing eyes scoured me before he looked back at the fire. “I know exactly what the fuck I’m doing.”

Sweat pooled on his forehead. He was covered in splintered wood. Ian Kemp had cracked, and he wasn’t coming back until he was ready.

Way too far into his headspace, he ignored me standing next to him.

I walked back to my house and watched him dismantle years of memories as he stared at the fire until it went out.

And then the house next to mine went completely quiet.

Blurb:
They say it happens when you least expect it.

It did for me.

It started the moment I saw the simple message pop up on my computer screen:

Cameron’s Mac: Hi.

And when I met the eyes of the gorgeous man messaging me from across the coffee shop, I never thought my reply would lead to the most intense, sexual, and passionate relationship of my life.

We both agreed to check our bags at the door and put our future hopes and aspirations on the table.

It worked.

I fell in love with his no holds barred attitude, sexy smirk, and undeniably good heart . . . and for a while we forgot about our baggage. We happily tripped over it to get to the other, neither of us willing to show the contents of our pasts in the off chance it could ruin us.

We built our love on a foundation of gray.

It was life in black and white that threatened to tear us apart.

EXCERPT:
Cameron’s Mac: Hi.
I looked above my laptop and took a deep breath before I accepted his invitation.

Abbie’s Mac: Hi.
Abbie, he’s going to wear your skin! I tried to ignore my inner voice.

Cameron’s Mac: I saw you with the homeless guy.
Abbie’s Mac: Ok?
He took a sip out of his Real Men Love Pomeranians mug and shrugged before he typed.

Cameron’s Mac: So, that was nice of you. Most people in the city just walk on by.
Abbie’s Mac: Oh. Most people do walk past Bennie. But he’s different and I’m not most people.
He lifted a brow and bit his lip.

Cameron’s Mac: I see that.

Cameron’s Mac: Want to have your next cup with me?
Say yes, say yes! It’s only coffee!
Abbie’s Mac: No, thank you.
You idiot.
His brows drew tight with his frown.

Cameron’s Mac: Sure? How about some breakfast?
My pulse raced with the memory of my last reaction to that type of attention and the consequences, and I answered without another thought.

Abbie’s Mac: No, thanks.
His chuckle was deep and covered me, even across the space between us. He bit his full bottom lip as he typed, his smirk still intact.

Fuck. Me. Damn it, Abbie!
Cameron’s Mac: Well, I guess today is not my day.

Abbie’s Mac: That’s all you’ve got?
I had no clue why I sent that message . . . why I was bothered that he didn’t try harder. Just that fucking smirk. It was sexy as hell.

He read my message and shrugged as he typed.

Cameron’s Mac: You seem to enjoy coffee. I don’t have an agenda. You’re beautiful, I noticed. I wanted to drink coffee with you. You said no. I’m going to scrape up the rest of my pride now and head out.
He closed his laptop and stood while I deflated. Damn it. He was being nice. Since when are guys just . . . nice?

Am I a man hater? Have I become that woman?
I spoke up as he slipped his computer into a worn leather bag.

“I’m sorry,” I offered in quick apology. “I was expecting some horrible line or screwed up proposition. The web, messaging, anything that has to do with technology has been hazardous for me. I’ve seen enough unsolicited dick pics for a lifetime. I was just being cautious.” And that was the truth. But I’d said it aloud in verbal vomit. Did I really say “dick pics” out loud?

He chuckled again as he looked down at me from where he stood, then grinned.

“Today isn’t the right day.” The husky baritone of his voice matched the silky hue of his eyes, which seemed to darken as he looked me over.

“No?” I asked in a whisper as I sized up his six-foot-plus frame and imagined the possibilities.

“No,” he said. “Maybe we can not have coffee again sometime?”

He’d tapped out with a simple ‘no’ from me. He couldn’t have been that interested in the first place.

I couldn’t deny the disappointment welling up in my ovaries.

Okay.” I lifted the last syllable when he didn’t press further.

Cameron pulled out his wallet and set some money on his table then walked over to mine and did the same.

“At least let me buy your next cup.”

After setting the bills down, he stood over me briefly and I caught his scent—purely masculine. I inhaled as much as I could without being obvious. He didn’t smell like a psycho.

Cameron picked up his man–bag while I pictured running my fingers through his messy, inches thick, dark-brown hair.

Don’t let him leave. Tell him you aren’t that big of a bitch. But that would seem desperate. You aren’t desperate. But you are horny. Omg, are you horny??
As if reading my thoughts, I caught another flash of his teeth and had to bite my cheek to keep my reaction in check.

“I’ll see you.”

“Yeah, see you. And thanks,” I said to his retreating back, an octave louder than necessary. “For the coffee,” I added. Outside the window, Cameron bent and exchanged words with Bennie before sticking some cash in his hand.

Well, Abbie. Guess you’ll just have to wait until the next time you roll out of bed and a beautiful man hits on you. Should happen again, you IDIOT!
Once again, my hesitance had cost me. And I couldn’t help but feel like this time it cost me big.

Sagging into my seat, I continued to stare in his direction, watching those broad shoulders walk out of my life.

REVIEW – SWEEPING THE SERIES (Balls In Play #3) by Kate Stewart

SYNOPSIS

Ren Makavoy is one season away from realizing his Major League dreams. Unfortunately, his bad-boy reputation off the field has landed him in hot water. Ren swears his days of drinking, brawling, and seducing starlets are over, but management sees fit to bring in PR to clean up his act. Determined to prove himself as a reputable catcher, his plans of playing along backfire when he comes face to face with the woman who shattered his heart.

She is the last hope of saving his reputation.

And things are about to get a hell of a lot hotter.

This sinfully sexy second-chance romantic dramedy is a stand-alone and spinoff of The Balls in Play Series. Join the rest of the gang from Anything but Minor and Major Love for one last season of love, laughter, and baseball.

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****FIVE STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

Even as I settled into the role I was expected to play, I didn’t play it well. I tried everything, and no part of me wanted to forget. Loving her was torture. And the realization that I was still so much in love with her, well, that was the cruelest punishment.

I want to give Kate Stewart the biggest hug, and smooch and then a fist bump because this short story was absolute PERFECTION!! I may have to switch teams and choose Ren McAvoy as my new favorite book boyfriend created by Ms. Stewart!! Who knew this character had it in him to be such a charismatic Hero??!! I don’t think I can find the words to truly express just how much I fell in love with this novella!! It was fabulous from beginning to end and it’s got Kate’s signature ”HOTTER THAN H” steam!! What a terrific addition to the ”Balls in Play” series! If you love Second Chance Romances, this one is sure to steal your hearts!

Ren McAvoy and Erica Wild were once madly in love with each other but one day without an explanation or an apology, Erica packed up and left her life with Ren just when he was making it to the big leagues. For the next two years, Ren will be labeled the “bad boy” of MLB, bedding a different woman every night and having his escapades splattered all over the gossip magazines. When management decides they’ve had enough of his antics they hire a new PR agent to get his reputation back in a favorable light. Ren is shocked and maybe even a little excited to meet his new agent who turns out to be the woman who broke his heart, Erica.

There’s a lot of heated arguments, angst, and comedic moments with all the beloved characters from the previous books. It was terrific to get the chance to spend some more time with Rafe, Alice, Andy, and April! They made for a perfect ensemble cast! I loved SWEEPING THE SERIES so much that I wish Kate would write more installments but I believe this will be the end of it.
