Adele was
babbling, she knew, but she couldn’t stop herself. So she was thankful when
Jones cut her off and yanked her close. He sat up at the same time, and before
she even realized what was happening, he was kissing her.
Finally.
The last
time – the only time – they’d kissed, he’d disappeared forever. This
time, she was determined to make the most of it. They both shifted onto their
knees, arms going around each other, and when she gasped at the intensity of
his hold, his tongue slipped into her mouth. She moaned and curled her fingers
in his hair, praying the moment would last forever.
Ah, but
this place is the anti-prayer. So shall you think it, so shall it not
be.
Jones’
hands had moved to cup either side of her face. He pulled away, then leaned
back in for another slow kiss. Tried to say something, then kissed her again.
Once more, and she could just feel it – it was the last one.
“I wish we
could stay here forever,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to hers.
“Me, too,”
she whispered back. He grabbed hold of her wrists and gently removed her arms
from around his neck.
“But it
can’t be. You either go forward, or you go back. You can only stand still for
so long, Adele.”
She didn’t
even know what he was talking about, and she knew he was right. The storm above
them was getting worse. Something was coming. Eternity waited for no one, not
even her, it seemed.
She
squeezed her eyes shut tight.
“I tried,
Jones. I tried to stand still with you. I tried to get caught in the now with
you.”
“I know you
did. And now I want you to try something else,” his voice was so low, she could
barely hear it over all the thunder.
“What?”
“I want you
to concentrate. And then, I want you to open your eyes.”
She bit
into her bottom lip and turned her head, brushing her nose against the side of
his cheek so she could remember the feel of him. Inhaled deeply so she could
remember the smell of him. Then she took an even deeper breath and did as she
was told.
She
concentrated on the ground below her. Listened to the storm raging above her.
Felt Jones’ body heat in front of her.
And she
also remembered. Could hear her brother Ocean laugh in her ear, the sound made
such rare appearances. Could picture her brother River standing in front of
her, looking so serious and concerned. Could feel her brother August around
her, giving her one of his big hugs.
The wind
around them didn’t lessen in intensity, but it did slow down. Or time slowed,
she couldn’t be sure. There was a terrific booming noise, followed by the sound
of something ripping. At first, she thought it was the sky – the storm must
have really been opening up. Then she felt a tremor in the ground under her,
and she knew what it was.
The giant
tree was finally tipping over. It groaned as gravity took hold of its weight
and pulled it over the edge of the cliff. She could actually sense the roots
being ripped from the earth as the tree made a swan dive.
And as the
roots came free, they tore apart the face of the cliff. She could feel the
ground crumbling away from her, could tell she was falling. Jones held onto her
for as long as he could, but just as his arms were about to reach their limit,
gravity took over once again and yanked her away completely.

*****3.5 Stars*****

The premise of A STICKY SITUATION sounded pretty hot and I was excited to get my hands on this book, but I wasn’t expecting the story I ended up getting. That’s not to say that I was disappointed but I have to admit that this wasn’t my favorite in the ”Awkward Love” series. I would be lying if I said I was not entertained, because I was, but something was missing for me. I never completely felt the chemistry between Hannah and “Brix”. I don’t know that I liked the twist that the author threw into the story.

There were some very funny, extremely embarrassing moments that Hannah gets caught up in that made for some great entertainment. I just was always hoping for more development with the connection between the main characters. It felt like things were rushed and didn’t flow organically between them.

I have really enjoyed most of the books in this series. They’re quick and fun reads when you’re in the mood for something funny and steamy.

Here are my overall ratings:

Hero: 3.5
Heroine: 3.5
Plot: 3
Angst: 3
Steam: 4
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 4

Panicked, I
sit up, gaping in disbelief at the person standing in the doorway. I grasp at
the sheet, I frantically try to cover the most crucial bits of me, while
feeling completely mortified. He, on the other hand, can’t wipe that damn smirk
off his face.
What the fuck?
His head
cocks sideways and his lips twitch into an even bigger grin that I’d probably
find sexy—if I wasn’t two knuckles deep and showing him more of me than any guy
has seen of me in a long time.
“Well, I
have to say,” he drawls in a low, husky voice, “women do a lot of shit to try
to get my attention, but this is definitely up there as the most original.”
I can’t
even comprehend what he’s saying, because I’m frozen on the spot and trying to
work out what the hell he’s doing in my room. Is this some kind of sick joke?
Is he planning on attacking me? My eyes dart to the phone on the wall, but they
switch back to him when he walks closer.
Fuck.
He steps
out of the shadows, giving me a better look at his face and—
Double fuck.
What the
heck is the lead singer of The Vision doing in my hotel room?
I don’t
know whether to laugh or cry, so my body decides to do both. I can’t think
straight, but I’m doing my best to stop freaking the fuck out so I can try to
figure a way out of this mess. I’m so unbelievably embarrassed. And naked,
apart from this flimsy sheet. I should probably get dressed. The problem is,
doing anything at this point feels impossible.
“So, do you
speak?” he asks, jolting me out of my thoughts. “I mean, we’ve established that
you can moan quite well.”
Oh God.
“I had a
friend once, who was mute,” he muses, “we drifted apart because our
conversations were always very one-sided.”
“I am not mute,” I snap, glaring at him.
“Great,
then you can start by telling me what you’re doing.” He laughs and rubs his
jaw. “I mean, it’s pretty obvious what you were doing, I’m just not sure why. Not that I didn’t appreciate the
show,” he quickly adds. “Trust me, I did.” His dark eyes flash with amusement.
“It’s refreshing to meet a girl who doesn’t mind opening herself up.”
What the ever loving fuck…?
How can he
casually crack jokes like he isn’t the slightest bit embarrassed about walking
in on me? I don’t trust myself to speak, so I just glare at him.
“Can I get
you anything, like a drink?” he offers. “Or maybe offer you a hand…?”
“You could offer me some privacy?” I suggest, my
body shaking with rage.
“Privacy,
huh?” He grins at me. “Sure. I’ll turn around.”
He’ll turn around?
“Or you
could leave, the same way you came in?” I retort.
“You seem pretty agitated over there. I’m
guessing I interrupted the finale? Have you thought about trying some
relaxation breathing?” he suggests, “it’s supposed to be great for relieving
tension.”
“Are you
done?” I growl.
“Are you?”
he asks. “Maybe you should be the one leaving?”
A surge of
anger hits me. Why the hell should I be the one to leave when he’s the one in
my room? I wrestle myself up so I’m sitting on the edge of the bed, my knuckles
white from clinging onto the sheet so tightly. While I’m at it, why am I the
one who’s embarrassed?
If I can’t
get myself off in the privacy of my own room—
I stop,
mid-thought as I look around, an uneasy feeling creeping into my stomach. The
clothes scattered outside the bathroom. The freaking guitar leaning against the
couch that I somehow neglected to notice. The champagne. The note…there was no
upgrade.
I’m the one in the wrong room.
And I was
seconds from climaxing all over Brix Wilson’s bed.
My heart
pounds as a trickle of sweat makes it’s way down the back of my neck. I swat it
away, while trying hard to think up an excuse for being in his room that
sounds even half plausible.
Who am I
kidding? There’s no getting out of this. Not without me looking like a complete
fuckwit. Sure, they gave me the wrong key, which makes this whole mess not my
fault, but as if he’s going to believe that.
I take a
deep breath and reach for my clothes, somehow managing to dress myself while
showing minimal skin. Not that he hasn’t seen everything already.
God, he’s seen more of my than I have.
I stand up,
nearly losing my balance. My legs feel like jelly, so even walking feels like a
hard task, but I have to get out of here. And the longer I wait, the harder
escaping is going to be.
“I have to
go,” I mumble.
“So soon?
You went to all this trouble of getting in here and performing for me, and now
you’re leaving? Where’s the harm in hanging around for a little longer?” he
presses. “I was looking forward to seeing how far you’d go.”
I stalk
over to the door, avoiding all physical contact with him. He can’t wipe the
smirk off his face, but I can’t let myself think too hard about what just
happened, or I’ll lose control. As I close the door behind me, I hear his voice
call out after me;
“What, I
don’t even get an encore?”

Anton Scalene
I was born in hell, raised in a nightmare.
I was fifteen when I killed for the first time.
As a child, my dreams were about climbing out of that hell,
of being on top of the pile of bodies and not one of them.
I live in the shadows, find solace in the darkness.
Until her.
A chance meeting, a fleeting moment…
Her innocence beguiles me.
I want her, but to have her would destroy the very part of
her I crave.
And even knowing that, I can’t stay away, until my past
threatens to drag her into my nightmare.
Letting her go is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but a
demon has no business falling in love with an angel.

Excerpt
I didn’t drag it out. Staring him right in the face, I drew
the blade across his neck. His hand went to his throat, blood immediately
coating it, his eyes going wide with fear. I watched as he realized it was the
end for him, watched as his eyes dimmed, listened to his death rattle. I didn’t
move until his soulless eyes stared up empty. Only then did I climb off him,
toss the knife on the floor, and strolled from the room. Removing the gloves, I
grabbed the duffel, pulling the door closed behind me. Down the street, I
tossed the gloves into the trashcan fire the homeless were using to stay warm.
The boy I had been died that night and Anton Scalene was born.

At the stadium’s
concession stand, I took a tall stool, putting Georgina and I at eye level
since she stood. “So, why didn’t you kiss François?” I asked. “Bad breath?”
She gasped
into her hand. “My breath is fine.”
“I meant
his. I’m sure yours is pure relish on a hotdog.”
She made a
face. “Gross.”
“I happen
to love relish,” I said. “But does François?”
Each time I
said François with flourish, she
flinched. I didn’t care. Something about him bugged me—I just couldn’t put my
finger on it.
“We didn’t
kiss because you interrupted us,” she pointed out.
“So? If I
were in his position, and we both wanted that kiss, I wouldn’t let anyone stop
me.”
Frank and I are clicking,” she said,
scowling. “There was even mention of spending time at his summerhouse.”
“Hamptons?”
She coughed
into her fist. “Boca Raton.”
The idea of
Georgina spending a summer with him in Boca Raton was tragic enough that I
almost smiled. I got the sense she was playing up the date. If it was so great,
why wasn’t she sitting here with him? And why was I more relieved than smug
about that? “Meanwhile, Justin and I will be clamming in Montauk.”
“You two
should really just make it official and announce your love to the world.”
“But then I
wouldn’t get to flirt with pretty girls.”
“For
someone who pretends to have as much game as you,” she said, “I still haven’t
seen you successfully flirt with any
girls since I’ve known you.”
I smirked.
“How do you know I’m not flirting with you right now?”

Anthony Dwayne

Anthony started writing years ago as a hobby, but it quickly
turned into a passion. He first began publishing under the name, Kane Caldwell,
but has since changed the name he will continue publishing under. He is the
epitome of a country boy with jeans, t-shirt, hat (No, not a cowboy hat. Lol),
scruffy face, work boots on, driving his truck and definitely not a guy you’d
picture writing romance. Anthony works in the construction business where he
runs his own crew. He has two awesome boys, and an amazing woman that keeps him
on the edge. He drinks way too much coffee and probably curses in one day
what others curse in their lifetime. Lol! Anthony resides in the south
where the weather is warm but most times sweltering hot. During down time, he
loves to be surrounded by family, friends, great food, or engrossed in a good
book. And of course, putting his imagination to work, where reality and fantasy
collide.
