”There’s a beast inside me. It’s part of who I am…the savage part of my nature that allows me to do all the things I’ve done. Being with you has calmed those impulses, but it will come out from time to time. It’s inevitable.”

It’s been several years since I’ve read anything by L.A. Fiore and after having finished SAVAGE, I know I won’t be waiting that long to read her next book. She is going on my automatic must-read list! This story felt like a dark fantasy even though there really aren’t any supernatural beings in it. I loved the way the author’s writing paints a beautiful picture of the landscape of Scotland, it added to the dark and yet wildly romantic ambiance.

Lizzie Danton is a well-known and hugely successful artist. Her life would seem glamorous to most on the outside looking in, but she grew up in the most horrible of circumstances. Her mother was a conniving and despicable woman who only ever showed Lizzie cruelty and mentally abused her at every turn. When her father left them both, Lizzie’s mother dropped her off at a boarding school and pretty much abandoned her from then on. At the boarding school, she suffered even more at the hands of an abusive headmistress and another student who took great pleasure in bullying poor Lizzie whenever she had the chance. Fast forward to present day, Lizzie finds out that a woman she never knew existed, her great aunt, Brianna, has left her beautiful cottage and the acreage of land it sits on to Lizzie in her will. At first, she is hesitant to go to Scotland because of the connection to her mother but something inside her has her determined to learn more about her deceased Aunt.

As soon as Lizzie arrives in Scotland, she feels a sense of belonging. For the first time she feels like she has a place to call home, and when she meets her Aunt’s husband she quickly learns that she had a heart of pure gold and it brings some peace to Lizzie. While she goes about touring the town her Aunt called home, she runs into a handsome but seemingly dangerous man who is feared by most of the townsfolk. But Lizzie isn’t scared in the least as she doesn’t believe in gossip and is one to form her own opinions instead of being influenced by others.

Brochan McIntyre isn’t the most law-abiding citizen and he pretty much keeps to himself in his lush and expansive castle. What he has chosen as his profession would make him out to be a monster to most people but once you learn of the sad and horrifying life he was born into, you can’t help but feel your heart break for him. Brochan’s mother died during childbirth and instead of showering him with unconditional love, his demented father acted with nothing but pure hatred towards him. There were adults in his life that loved him unconditionally and did what they could to protect Brochan from his father’s wrath over the years but the damage had been done and it turned him into a cold and detached killer.

As soon as Lizzie and Brochan meet, you can feel that sizzling chemistry they share. Brochan has never felt anything for a women before but something about Lizzie pulls him to her like a moth to a flame. She is the first person to truly see him because she is a kindred spirit. Once the romance takes off between them the story gets incredibly steamy but there is always danger lurking behind every corner as the two seem to have countless enemies who mean to destroy any happiness they have a shot at.

Will their pasts continue to haunt them? Is it possible for Lizzie and Brochan to live ”happily ever after” when there are so many people out there who want to see them fail?

Here are my overall ratings on the book:

Hero: 5
Heroine: 5b>
Plot: 4.5
Angst:3

Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5

Savage is a story of fighting your own demons and chasing hope through love. A contemporary romance with a dark fairytale vibe set in the majestic Scotland. I fell in love with the characters and the vividly described scenery. – Elena’s Book Blog

Savage was an absolutely breathtaking read. From start to finish, L.A. paints incredibly vivid pictures that make you feel like you’re actually in the old castles on the rolling hills of Scotland. It was a masterpiece from beginning to end. –Sophie, Bookalicious Babes

LA Fiore weaved together the perfect romance with Savage. I fell in love with Brochan and Lizzie so completely I never wanted the book to end. – Author Jessica Prince

The author did a brilliant job bringing Scotland alive, everything was told in such graphic detail that if I closed my eyes I was taken on a mystical journey. Definitely a highly recommended one click come release day, this is a journey you will want to go on. –Kitty Kat’s Crazy About Books

Both the main characters were amazing. I ADORED Lizzie. She was smart. She was a fighter. She was feisty. She had a huge heart and accepted everything that was Brochan without censor or hesitation. Brochan was a bit more complicated. He had that sexy, brooding thing down to a science. –Eve, Between the Bookends

L.A. Fiore is the author of several books including Beautifully Damaged, Collecting the Pieces and His Light in the Dark. Her favorite movie is Star Wars, a love her son shares. They hope to build their own Millennium Falcon one day. She would like to meet the Winchester Boys to thank them for enlightening her on the versatility of salt as not just a food enhancer, but as protection from supernatural threats. And she thinks it would be interesting to be a zombie, to get an idea of what life is like as a brain-addicted fiend so she can be their voice to tell their side of the story. She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and kids, their two spoiled cats and their awesome dog.

My hands fisted in the pockets of my trousers as I watched Lizzie Danton walking down the drive. Fuck. Damn that fucking conscience. I didn’t need it, didn’t fucking want it. I wanted to turn my back, but I could hear Brianna and Fenella, even Finnegan, in my head. “Fucking hell.”
Fenella was just entering the library as I was leaving it. She was giving me her stink eye, that frosty look that condemned without her needing to speak a word. What the hell did she want? I let the woman sleep here, fed her, and clothed her. It was the clothes, or lack of them, that stirred something left well enough alone. “Our guest is walking home.”
     “I saw.”
“I think she’s coming down with a cold.”
“Fucking walking in the rain will do that.”
“Not her fault the car broke down.” She narrowed her eyes at me before she added, “And it’s not her fault she’s kin to Norah Calhoun. Remember, she’s kin to Brianna too.”
I didn’t pay my staff to lecture me. They weren’t staff; they were family, but I ignored that. I was halfway down the hall when Fenella called after me, “She wants to paint your home.”
That stopped me, my head swiveling to her. “She said that?”
“Yes. Said you could Google her to see her portfolio and that she would gift you the painting.”
I didn’t need to Google her. I was familiar with her work. But after my interrogation last night, why the hell would she offer that? “Why?”
“Because the sight of the castle from the lane took her breath away, her words.”
It was the view from the lane that sold me on this place; more specifically the feeling of peace it evoked, a foreign, but not unpleasant feeling. Fucking hell.
There were a few broken branches blocking the drive. By the time I got the Range Rover out of the garage, it had been about an hour since Miss Danton left. Halfway back to the village, I saw the body on the boulder. My chest grew tight thinking harm had come to her; the unwanted sensation annoyed the hell out of me. Pulling over, I climbed out to hear Lizzie Danton talking to herself. She had a bizarre habit of talking to things, like those cows and Brianna’s ghost. Her words that day had lingered because despite the shit she’d seen, she still had it in her to paint fucking sprites…to try for happy. I couldn’t decide if she was the most well adjusted person of my acquaintance or the craziest. I wondered if she’d spent any time in a mental facility.
I couldn’t make out what she was saying, didn’t really care. My goal was to get her ass back to the cottage. That would ease the nagging from my fucking conscience. I stepped closer, to peer down at her, her eyes went wide then she screamed. She jumped off the boulder like it was on fire.
“What the hell! Didn’t you ever learn not to sneak up on someone resting on a rock?”
I ignored that ridiculous question. She was pale and there were dark circles under her eyes. “You don’t look so good.”
“Nice. Scare the shit out of me and then insult me. Seriously, charm school was completely lost on you.”
She had the oddest way of communicating. More surprising was the urge to grin at her nonsense. “I’ll give you a ride to the cottage.”
“No, thank you. I wouldn’t want you thinking I was after your car, or your house and heaven forbid you. I’ll walk.” She started walking away but stopped and turned back. “And why assume I was like my mother? You knew Aunt Brianna, but you interrogated me like I was after something. Never mind. I don’t care what you think.”
She did care. I saw how deeply it cut her to be compared to her mother. Another unfamiliar sensation curled in my gut. Guilt. I shook it off. “You can barely stand.”
Temper burned behind her eyes, but she acquiesced. “Fine.”
She didn’t wait for me and walked to the car in much the way a child in temper might do. She yanked open the door and dropped into the seat. I climbed in, felt her eyes on me, but when I looked over her focus was out the window.
“Why are the villagers freaked out by you?” She turned in her seat to face me. “They think you’re a werewolf.”
I’d heard that rumor. Was actually rather fond of that one. “Maybe I am.”
I glanced over at her and she was contemplating the real possibility that I was a werewolf. Damn, if I didn’t want to grin.
“I don’t think so, but I’ll be sure to stay inside on the full moon.”

REVIEW – THE RIPPLE EFFECT: EPISODE 1 (The Ripple Effect #1) by Keri Lake

ripple-effect-ep-1-1-2

SYNOPSIS

Ripley

They call me RIP.
I’m a killer. A murderer. A psychopath.
In the eyes of the righteous, I’m a monster, born of sin and depravity.
I want to protect her, but I’m not a good man.
I want to love her, but I no longer feel.
She gets under my skin, though, and has awakened something inside of me.
Something I’d kill for.
I’m not her savior—not even close. In fact, I’m worse than the hell she’s already suffered.
I’m her vengeance. Tit for tat, as they say.
And if she’s not careful, I’ll be her ruin.

Dylan

For months, I’ve watched him.
I’ve fantasized him as my savior, my lover. My ticket out of the hell I’ve lived in for the last six years.
I never dreamed he’d be my nightmare.
Had I known what he really is, I’d have never gotten in the car that night, but life is full of cause and effect.
And sometimes the choice on offer isn’t a choice at all.
It’s the result of something already in motion, and we’re merely left to survive the ripple effect.

*This is an erotic suspense/erotic romance not recommended for readers under the age of 18 due to graphic violence and sex.

Darkness has a way of welcoming immoral self-indulgence. Whether it’s sex or murder, the night makes it a bit more personal, dream-like, since most of the world is in a state of suspended consciousness. Completely unaware of the danger that lurks among them during the day.

The Ripple Effect is a seriously dark and gritty story. There isn’t even a hint of romance within the pages of this book. The characters are deeply flawed and broken, and yet for some reason, you can’t help but hope the Hero and Heroine will eventually end up together. At times the scenes are beyond gory, so if you are squeamish, this may not be the book for you.

Dylan is just another unfortunate victim of the child welfare system. She’s been living in foster care since her crack whore mother died several years back. Her current foster dad pays nightly visits to her room, drugs her and then sexually molests her. She’s become addicted to oxy. The only thing to bring happiness to her life is her dog, Charlie, and the man who goes to the diner across the street every night who she has illicit fantasies about. One day, after school she is attacked by her foster dad and is put in a precarious situation which ignites her survival instincts and she ends up escaping with her dog and another little girl who was staying at the house as well. Desperate to make some money, she heads out to the streets in hopes of picking up a guy who’d be willing to pay her a couple hundred for some sexual favors. She ends up getting into the car of the absolute worst guy imaginable.

Ripley is an assassin for hire. This man definitely has a strong constitution and a huge imagination. Killing someone would probably be too mild of a term to describe how his victims meet their end. It is just too gory to even describe. But somehow he has a sexy edge to him, I mean it’s not like he’s killing innocent people. These men are in organized crime, pedophiles, rapists, and deal in human trafficking. During his stakeout on his latest mark, he sees what appears to be an underaged girl trying to turn tricks and she becomes an unwanted complication as she gets into the car of his next intended hit.

Rip follows them to an abandoned warehouse. When he gets inside he can’t help but be impressed by the tenacity of the young woman. She’s a fighter and does her best to protect herself from the slime who has made it clear his intentions are to rape and kill her. Rip ends up stepping in before Dylan is about to be taken out and she is knocked unconscious. When she comes to, the horrific scene that is laid out before her eyes has her gut wrenching from the grotesque visuals. Somehow she is able to reach the part of Rip’s deeply hidden humanity and he spares her life. He gives her $50 from the canvas bag full of cash that her dead potential rapist was carrying on him.

There seems to be a perpetual black cloud hovering over Dylan. She finds herself in need of some serious cash but having no home nor anyone to turn to, she recalls that bag of cash that Rip took with him and as luck would have it, Rip turned out to be the man from the diner who she would watch and fantasize about every Friday night. She knows when and where she’ll be able to find him and somehow get the chance to get her hands on that money.

I’ve never read anything by Keri Lake before but having seen so much love for her previous series, I couldn’t wait to dive into this book. I usually love for my stories to have some romance in it and although this one was lacking in that department, I still was very entertained. There were moments in the beginning where I wasn’t sure I could read it as I’m not a fan of child abuse and molestation but luckily the story doesn’t stay in that uncomfortable area for too long. I’m not too sure what to think of Rip at the moment. I think he had good reasons for getting into his line of business but thenumber of kills under his belt has nearly obliterated any semblance of an empathetic soul within him.

I do hope that somehow, Dylan is able to get out of the dire straits that her life has led her to and that maybe these two characters will find solace within the connection that is building between them.

-When you want a man dead, you buy a gun. When it’s personal, you hire me.-RIP

22068227-_sy540_

Dylan Westrick is a beautiful 17 yr. old girl that lives her life between foster care & living on the streets of Chicago. She’s had a tragic life at the mercy of others with no opportunity. She feels discarded & alone, and is just trying to survive the next two months till she graduates high school. She will be 18 in a few weeks & will finally be free.

Dylan has been watching a gorgeous man for months from her window & fantasizes about him. She doesn’t expect to ever meet him, but when she unexpectedly comes face to face with this stranger, she quickly finds out he’s more complicated than she realized. She soon thinks he’s a psychopath. Stunningly handsome, but crazy & scary as hell.

Ripley aka RIP lives in a world where it’s kill or be killed. After a rough childhood, his moral thread snapped years ago. He works for the underworld & left his humanity behind when he began ridding the world of vile scumbags. He’s now nothing but a feared machine used to exact someone else’s vengeance. He’s a mercenary that delivers pain. He’s a numb, heartless, killer. He’s a calculated monster that shows no mercy & feels no empathy, so when he meets a beautiful young girl that he wants to protect, it goes against his instincts. She quickly gets under his skin & he can’t stop thinking about her.

-He’s beautiful. A sad, but beautiful man.

-I hate that his touch is everything I’d fantasized- strong and penetrating, but gentle.

-She is the wrinkle in smooth satin, the curiosity that won’t leave me be.

-“Every decision you make affects every moment that follows, Dylan. It’s like a tipple effect. Choose wisely.”

Title: Out of the Storm
Author: J.B. McGee
Genre: Romantic Suspense

THEO
There’s an eerie calm before the storm,
And my best friend is in the direct path of the hit.
I have to protect him, no matter the cost.
He’s like a brother to me.
I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure he’s safe.
Even if that means being pulled into the vortex that is Jules Hemingway,
A sexy, fiery tempest that has the potential to destroy everything in her wake.
All I want is to dive in, take my chances.
But first, I must complete the mission—save my friend.
Though it may mean losing what really matters,
The only woman worth drowning for.
JULES
Something’s amiss—strange and ominous,
And I can’t quite put my finger on it.
When Theo Katawhateverhisnameis comes thundering in,
It’s like lightning to my heart, my body, my soul.
It’s a shock—a jolt, as I realize my life is a scam,
A scheme with no winners.
I’m in over my head, treading in a sea of lies,
Leery of whom to trust,
Only looking to protect myself, my heart.
Together, we’re wreckage, debris,
but are we collateral damage in this perfect storm?

“Passionate. Angsty. Mind-blowing. A masterful tale of intrigue, lust, and jaw-dropping sex…Yep. It’s one of my hottest reads this year.” -Ilsa Madden-Mills, Wall Street Journal Best-Selling Author

Swiping my face with my shirt, it’s hard to ignore the searing gazes of the girls in the gym that roam to the exposed skin of my ripped abs. A small sideways smirk quirks at the corners of my lips as I duck my head down, heat rushing to my cheeks. I work damn hard for this body, and I love when someone appreciates it. I nod at Rockin’ Red, who’s licking her pouty lips like I’m a fine piece of meat she’s hoping to slowly devour. She probably has a better chance with Charlie, unfortunately for her. Of course, there’s a lot more of him to consume. The thought causes me to chortle.
Making my way to the locker room, I swing the door open. “I’m meeting Jules tomorrow night. You can have your guy do it—” They glance in the mirror at me.
I nod. “‘Sup?”
“What’s happenin’?” Their jaws tick. It may have been posed as a question, but it was definitely a statement.
“I heard you overtalkin’ out there. You know I was engaged once. Never again. I say, get as much ass as you can while you can, man.”
Charlie’s eyes narrow at me as he sizes me up, but he’s more than six inches shorter than me. “It’s not nice to eavesdrop.”
“Didn’t mean to. Normally, I have my iPod with me, but I forgot it. And, if it was a secret, maybe you shouldn’t be talking so loudly I could hear you two machines over. But anyway, I’m not here to socialize.” I glance down at my pecs and abs as I pull my shirt over my head. “In case you can’t tell.”
“Right.” He laughs. “And as for my fiancée. If you saw her, you’d understand why I wanted the best of both fucking worlds, man. Have a nice night.” Charlie pats Tattoo Guy on the back. “Let’s get outta here, Angelo.” Ah. Charlie looks back over his shoulder. “Sorry, I didn’t catch your name. I’m Charlie Hawke.”
I didn’t miss that he didn’t extend his hand to me, so I push mine out toward him. “Theo. Theo Kataigída.”
“Greek, huh?”
I nod, smiling. “You got it.”
He never takes my hand. They both just give me a look that screams ‘go fuck yourself’ before walking out. Yeah. The feeling is fucking mutual fuckers.

There’s not much more I can say about this story without giving too much away, and this unpredictable story is better enjoyed if you go in blind. I never expected how complex and delicious the plot was going to be. I’m very impressed by both of these authors. They took me on a thrilling ride, full of passion and great entertainment. I couldn’t get enough and now I’m desperate for more.
