REVIEW – QUIET MAN (Dream Man, #4.5) by Kristen Ashley

SYNOPSIS

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Ashley comes a new story in her Dream Man series…

Charlotte “Lottie” McAlister is in the zone. She’s ready to take on the next chapter of her life, and since she doesn’t have a man, she’ll do what she’s done all along. She’ll take care of business on her own. Even if that business means starting a family.

The problem is, Lottie has a stalker. The really bad kind. The kind that means she needs a bodyguard.

Enter Mo Morrison.

Enormous. Scary.

Quiet.

Mo doesn’t say much, and Lottie’s used to getting attention. And she wants Mo’s attention. Badly.

But Mo has a strict rule. If he’s guarding your body, that’s all he’s doing with it.

However, the longer Mo has to keep Lottie safe, the faster he falls for the beautiful blonde who has it so together, she might even be able to tackle the demons he’s got in his head that just won’t die.

But in the end, Lottie and Mo don’t only have to find some way to keep hands off until the threat is over, they have to negotiate the overprotective Hot Bunch, Lottie’s crazy stepdad, Tex, Mo’s crew of frat-boy commandos, not to mention his nutty sisters.

All before Lottie finally gets her Dream Man.

And Mo can lay claim to his Dream Girl.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

”QUIET MAN” is categorized as a novella in the “Dream Man” series but seemed to be more of an installment of the “Rock Chick” series instead. I’ve never read any of the “Rock Chick” books but I’m sure die-hard KA fans will be excited for the chance to spend more time with these particular characters. While I liked the Hero and Heroine, I felt the plot could have been better. There was little to no angst and hardly any action. I’m used to a lot of danger and jam-packed action in the “Dream Man” series and this book was highly lacking in both categories. We get the signature over the top Alpha Male KA Hero in Mo Morrison and an endearing Heroine in Lottie McAllister. Once Mo and Lottie were able to pursue their attraction for each other, the steam level is off the charts HOT, but their “insta-love” romance made this just an “ok” story instead of a five-star winner for me.

Lottie is one of the highest-paid strippers in a local gentleman’s club who’s caught the attention of a psychopath. After her boss receives a disturbing letter from the crazed stalker, he hires Hawk Delgado and his team to protect his number one asset. Mo is the strong and sexy silent type alpha who is assigned as Lottie’s 24/7 bodyguard. They spend every waking moment together for two weeks while Mo and Hawk’s team try to find out who is after Lottie. The majority of the story is spent on Mo trying to keep things professional while he is responsible for protecting Lottie. While I found the plot to be luke-warm, I was thoroughly entertained by all the steamy scenes!!

REVIEW – THE DAY HE CAME BACK by PENELOPE WARD

SYNOPSIS

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

It was the summer of my life.
I’d met the guy of my dreams.
Unfortunately, he was the son of my uppity employer—and very much off-limits.
But Gavin was a rebel. He knew his mother would disown him if she found out about us; in his eyes, we just had to be careful.
He never treated me as his mother did—like hired help.
Instead, Gavin put me on a pedestal and loved me harder than I’d ever been loved in my life.

What a summer it was.
Until it all ended—badly.

I was never supposed to see Gavin again.
That didn’t stop me from thinking about him every day for ten years.
I knew little about his life now, just that he was an entrepreneur living an ocean away.

When a twist of fate had me working again in the very place our love affair started a decade earlier, I knew it was only a matter of time before I might see him again.
But I wasn’t prepared.
What if he hated me?
What if he loved someone else now?
I wasn’t prepared for all the unknowns.

And most of all, I wasn’t prepared for today to be the day he came back.

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I had no chance to prepare myself. Before I knew it, I turned around and stared into the shocked eyes of the only guy I’d ever loved, one I hadn’t seen in a decade. I’d never dreamed that today –a random Wednesday—would be the day he came back.

The latest by Penelope Ward is a forbidden/second chance romance. Gavin Masterson is the oldest son of a powerful and affluent family, while Raven is the only child of the Masterson family’s maid. When Gavin returns home after graduating from Oxford University, he becomes instantly bewitched by Raven much to the horror of his uptight and controlling mother. The two carry on a secret romance for about a month but then Raven abruptly breaks up with Gavin and doesn’t tell him the real reason for her decision to end things. Ten years later, the two cross paths again. The attraction is still there but has time erased the pain suffered from a broken heart? Will the truth come out and even if it does, is it too late for these two to rekindle their romance?

I have been a huge fan of Penelope Ward’s for years now, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. The cover of ”THE DAY HE CAME BACK” is visually stunning! The plot was decent but I wasn’t crazy in love with either character. When we get towards the last 30% of the book, it felt a bit rushed. All of the issues that the couple had to face seemed to be quickly and neatly resolved. I did like that the first half of the book was devoted to the couple’s past and the last half jumped to the present. The switching from past to present every other chapter is getting old in romances, so this was a refreshing change for me.

Here are my overall ratings:

Hero: 4
Heroine: 3.5
Plot: 3.5
Angst: 4
Steam: 4
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 4.5

REVIEW – I HATE YOU by Ilsa Madden-Mills

Charisma Rossi.

Can this wide receiver score the girl or will he make the biggest fumble of his life?

He’s everything. He’s everything I never knew I wanted. He’s perfection wrapped in a dark, deep lake, and I ache to swim in those waters, to discover his secrets and let him delve into mine

”I HATE YOU”, the latest by Ilsa Madden-Mills, has a couple of my favorite tropes—enemies-to-lovers, and second chance romance. Blaze Townsend is the hotshot wide receiver of Waylon University’s football team. He’s got endless amounts of jersey chasers trying to win his heart over. Charisma Rossi is the feisty nerdy girl from the Bronx who he can’t seem to get off his mind. The two had a hot & heavy three weeks together but then Blaze humiliated Charm when he publicly broke up with her at a sorority party. It’s been several months and neither Charm nor Blaze has been able to move on. When the new semester starts and they end up sitting next to each other in the same psych class, Blaze tries to make amends but Charisma is not willing to help ease his guilty conscience. Eventually, it becomes difficult for Charm to ignore her true feelings for Blaze, but their shared insecurities threaten to wreck their relationship once again.

Blaze and Charisma have intense sexual chemistry and when they give in to it, I couldn’t help but stop to fan myself a time or two! Their biggest problem is that neither of them is any good at reading the situation. They each took turns jumping to the wrong conclusion due to deep-rooted insecurities and it made for some frustrating angst. While I found that I was equally annoyed with both characters, I can’t deny that I was pretty much consumed by this book and finished it in a day.

REVIEW – THE LAST POST by Renee Carlino

SYNOPSIS

In this evocative and poignant novel from the USA TODAYbestselling author of Blind Kiss and Wish You Were Here, a young widow in the midst of grieving her late husband through Facebook posts learns to heal and fall in love again.

“See you on the other side.”

Laya Marston’s husband, Cameron, a daredevil enthusiast, always said this before heading off on his next adventure. He was the complete opposite of her, ready and willing to dive off a cliff-face, or parachute across a canyon—and Laya loved him for it. But she was different: pragmatic, regimented, devoted to her career and to supporting Cameron from the sidelines of his death-defying feats.

Opposites attract, right?

But when Cameron dies suddenly and tragically, all the stages of grief go out the window. Laya becomes lost in denial, living in the delusion that Cameron will come back to her. She begins posting on his Facebook page, reminiscing about their life together, and imagining new adventures for the two of them.

Micah Evans, a young and handsome architect at Laya’s father’s firm, is also stuck––paralyzed by the banal details of his career, his friendships, and his love life. He doesn’t know what he’s looking for, only that there is someone out there who can bring energy and spirit to the humdrum of his life.

When Micah discovers Laya’s tragic and bizarre Facebook posts, he’s determined to show Laya her life is still worth living. Leaving her anonymous gifts and notes, trying to recreate the sense of adventure she once shared with her late husband, Micah finds a new passion watching Laya come out of the darkness. And Laya finds a new joy in the experiences Micah has created for her.

But for Laya, letting another man in still feels like a betrayal to her late husband. Even though Micah may be everything she could wish for, she wonders if she deserves to find happiness again.

Written with Renée Carlino’s signature “tender and satisfying” (Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Maybe in Another Life) prose, this warm and compassionate novel shows us how powerful the courage to love and live again truly is.

There are times in life when the pendulum swinging between happiness and sadness begins to slow. The powerful force of emotions goes dormant, we pause, look up, and realize we are finally content.

This story was equally depressing as it was bizarre. At times I wondered what path the author was trying to pave for the main characters. I struggled with my feelings for this book for almost 70% of it. I didn’t empathize or even like the heroine, Laya, and I thought Micah was a deranged stalker. The only character that I liked was Cameron, the dead husband, whom we only get to meet during the first chapter of the book. I idealized him along with Laya, and that’s because, in her point of view, he was the perfect version of himself.

I was worried that this was going to be the first book by Renee Carlino that would be a disappointment, but the writing is good. I couldn’t help but laugh at the snarky and quick-witted banter between Micah and his twin sister Melissa. Those two cracked me up more times than I could count. Somehow the author managed to turn things around but it took almost three-quarters of the story for her to pull off what I considered to be an impossible feat. I couldn’t fathom that Laya and Micah could have believable chemistry but then the author throws in a plot twist to shake things up and it was then that I felt a connection to the story and characters. I only wish it didn’t take so long to finally click. I will say that the author has a great sense of humor and it made for some terrific comedic banter and I’m happy that I got the chance to read this one.

REVIEW – ON THE CORNER OF LOVE AND HATE (Hopeless Romantics, #1) by Nina Bocci

SYNOPSIS

For fans of Christina Lauren and Lauren Layne comes a delightfully sassy and sexy romance about a campaign manager who reluctantly works with the local Lothario to help revamp his image for the upcoming mayoral elections, only to discover that he’s hiding something that can turn both their lives upside down.

What’s a campaign manager’s worst nightmare? A smooth-talking charmer who’s never met a scandal that he didn’t like.

When Emmanuelle Peroni’s father—and mayor of her town—asks her to help rehab Cooper Endicott’s image, she’s horrified. Cooper drives her crazy in every way possible. But he’s also her father’s protégé, and she can’t say no to him without him finding out the reason why: Cooper and her have a messy past. So Emmanuelle reluctantly launches her father’s grand plan to get this Casanova someone to settle down with and help him lose his lothario reputation.

Cooper Endicott wanted to run for Mayor, but he never wanted the drama that went with it. Now that he’s on the political hamster wheel, the other candidates are digging up everything from his past. Even though he’s doing all the right things, his colorful love life is the sticking point for many of the conservative voters. He wants to win, badly, and he knows that if he wants any chance of getting a vote from the female population, he needs to change his image. The only problem? He might just be falling in love with the one person he promised not to pursue: the Mayor’s off-limits daughter.

A perfect blend of humor and heart, On the Corner of Love and Hate is the first in a new series from USA TODAY bestselling author Nina Bocci.

Anytime I was alone with him, which was why I actively avoided it, I was transported back to that eleven-year-old girl who realized that the belly flutters she got when he walked in wasn’t a lactose allergy but her first full-blown crush. At twenty-eight, those feelings didn’t remain, but the reminder of what they felt like did.

”ON THE CORNER OF LOVE AND HATE” is a frenemies-to-lovers romance which takes in the political arena. This book crept up on me ever so slowly in a good way. I knew right from the start that Emma and Cooper were harboring some intense feelings for each other and that certain perceptions were totally off the mark. Their story is high on angst and light on the schmexy. The anticipation that builds over when or if they’ll ever confess what’s in their hearts is what made this book so thoroughly entertaining for me. I’ve got a good feeling about this series and can’t wait to see what that author has in store for us next.

REVIEW – HAPPY GO LUCKY by L.H. Cosway

SYNOPSIS

Every workplace has that one person you don’t want to mess with.

At James & Peterson Investigations, that would be Cameron Grant: sullen, grouchy, intimidating, oh yeah, and sexy as hell. He can make your soul wither with a single disapproving glare. And he never, ever socialises with his co-workers.

This is why Maisie Wilkins, happy-go-lucky ray of sunshine, can’t fathom why Cameron finally decided to show up at their annual office Christmas party. Every year he received an invite, and every year he failed to attend. But not this year.

Curious as to why he’s there, Maisie can’t resist sitting next to Cameron. Before she knows it, she’s had one too many drinks and is drunkenly hailing a cab back to his place. Office party flings are not something she normally does, but despite his intimidating character, Cameron has a charm she can’t resist. Or maybe it was just those five gin and tonics blurring her judgement.

Whatever the reason, Maisie now has to navigate the awkward, tension filled waters of sharing an office with someone she’s slept with.

*****FIVE STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

Emotions I’d never felt before swelled inside me: longing, desire, respect, love. Yes, I couldn’t lie to myself any longer. I was falling for this man, drowning in the sea of him and there was no swimming back to the surface.

”HAPPY GO LUCKY” is a light-hearted office romance between a quirky super sweet woman and her gorgeous but grumpy and standoffish co-worker. This was a fun read that had it all—an endearing Heroine, swoon-worthy Hero, some deliciously steamy moments, and a mystery that provided some entertaining intrigue and unexpected plot twists. This is why I’m so in love with L.H. Cosway’s writing!!

Maisie Wilkins works as a researcher at a private investigation firm. She loves her job and her solitary life. She always has a cheerful disposition and goes out of her way to please others because she can’t stand the thought of anyone disliking her. On the night of her office Christmas party, she decides to make an effort to interact with Cameron Grant, her gorgeous but severely anti-social co-worker. She never expected to end up in his bed later that night. Fearing the possibility of becoming fodder for office gossip, Maisie asks Cameron to agree to forget they ever slept together. For some reason, she has it in her head that people think of her as a joke and that there’s no way someone like Cameron could ever have feelings for her. She couldn’t be more wrong.

When Maisie is offered a promotion at work to become a private investigator, she asks Cameron to be her mentor. The ability to keep things platonic during Maisie’s training proves to be almost impossible for the both of them. Throw in the difficulties of keeping their romance a secret in the office along with being immersed in a complex and dangerous case, this story was well and thoroughly entertaining.

I loved how while Maisie and Cameron might have seemed to be polar opposites, their differences made them fit like two perfect puzzle pieces. They helped each other to step outside of their comfort zones. I know that readers are going to fall in love with these characters.

REVIEW – SAY YOU STILL LOVE ME by K.A. Tucker

SYNOPSIS

The bestselling author of The Simple Wild and Keep Her Safe and “master of steamy romance” (Kirkus Reviews) delivers a sizzling novel about an ambitious and high-powered executive who reconnects with her first love: the boy who broke her heart.

Life is a mixed bag for Piper Calloway.

On the one hand, she’s a twenty-nine-year-old VP at her dad’s multibillion-dollar real estate development firm, and living the high single life with her two best friends in a swanky downtown penthouse. On the other hand, she’s considered a pair of sexy legs in a male-dominated world and constantly has to prove her worth. Plus she’s stuck seeing her narcissistic ex-fiancé—a fellow VP—on the other side of her glass office wall every day.

Things get exponentially more complicated for Piper when she runs into Kyle Miller—the handsome new security guard at Calloway Group, and coincidentally the first love of her life.

The guy she hasn’t seen or heard from since they were summer camp counselors together. The guy from the wrong side of the tracks. The guy who apparently doesn’t even remember her name.

Piper may be a high-powered businesswoman now, but she soon realizes that her schoolgirl crush is still alive and strong, and crippling her concentration. What’s more, despite Kyle’s distant attitude, she’s convinced their reunion isn’t at all coincidental, and that his feelings for her still run deep. And she’s determined to make him admit to them, no matter the consequences.

Because, even after all these years, with college and boyfriends, and my career and my engagement to David, Kyle Miller has always been a sliver in my heart, a shadow in my thoughts. A lingering “what if” that I have never been able to truly shake.

”SAY YOU STILL LOVE ME” is a sweet and steamy second chance romance that is both young adult and adult contemporary. It started off a bit too slow for me but luckily towards the second half of the story the plot started to rev up and I couldn’t wait to find out how it all would end. There were surprises I didn’t see coming.

Piper Calloway and Kyle Miller met and fell instantly in love during their shared summer as counselors at camp Wawa. It’s hard to believe that you can find your true soulmate at sixteen, but as the story unfolds it becomes clear that what they shared was more than a summer fling.

The story goes back and forth between present and past. We see how adult Piper and Kyle are living their lives and it’s obvious that thirteen years of separation has done absolutely nothing to erase the feelings they had for each other. I did feel that there may have been a little too much emphasis played on the back story which created the slowness for me. Maybe I am getting a bit tired of the switch from past to present in most of the books I have been reading lately.

Luckily plot twists take place towards the end, which explains Kyle’s actions in the past and why he suddenly reappears in Piper’s life. Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable read. It’s definitely worth adding to your summer reads list!

REVIEW – THE GUY ON THE RIGHT by Kate Stewart

SYNOPSIS

Strike One-My mother named me Theodore after her favorite chipmunk.

Not cool, Mom.

I‘ve spent most of my life answering to Teddy, because I couldn’t make Theo work.

Except for here. College. The place where all bets are off, and I’ve managed to redeem myself.

There’s only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot.

Doesn’t matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well.

And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she’s perfect.

That’s right. Theodore Houseman, former band geek, now marching band rock star has finally landed the girl of his dreams.

Everything is perfect.

That is, until Troy takes a good look at her.

I’m not going down without a fight. As a matter of fact, I’m not going down at all. As glorious as these days may be for my all-star roommate, Laney is my end game.

I may not know much about play strategy, but I’ve been the good guy my whole life. I’ve been listening and I know exactly what women want. Framed in a picture standing next to me, Troy may seem like Mr. Perfect, but he’s underestimating the guy on the right.

Spoiler alert: In this story, the underdog is going to win.

I want more, but I would rather go without than lose him. It’s fear that has me shaking in his arms. I’ve never felt so much in my life at once. Passion, lust, fear, ache, need, hope.

I have been a fan of Kate Stewart for years now. She is the Queen of the “slow burn” romance and she pulls it off magnificently once again with ”THE GUY ON THE RIGHT”. Theo wasn’t your typical swoon-worthy Hero. At first, he comes off as being the nerdy and somewhat awkward sidekick. Theo and Laney are so completely different that I didn’t think these two could ever have “white-hot” chemistry. I should have known that Kate would eventually ignite the spark between Theo and Laney in such a way that my heart was fully invested in this couple. Theo Houseman went from band geek to a sexy as hell book boyfriend, and Laney might be one of my most favorite of Kate Stewart’s Heroines.

Laney and Theo both have been burned by their past relationships. They vow to be strictly friends and for a while, this works for them, until one day they no longer want to remain in the friend zone. I’m not going to lie, it took quite a while for things to heat up but once they did, I 100% felt the chemistry between them. Their relationship was as equally heartfelt as it was passionate. But when demons from their past come back to haunt them, their love is put to the ultimate test.

REVIEW – MILLION DOLLAR MARRIAGE (Million Dollar, #2) by Katy Evans

SYNOPSIS

From New York Times bestselling author Katy Evans comes a hot romance about two strangers and their race to fall in love.

If someone had bet Nell a million dollars that she would be saying “I do” to a complete stranger on national television, she’d have called them crazy, but with her crushing student loan payments sending her deep into the red, she’s out of options. This should be nothing more than a business transaction—until she sets eyes on her groom, and everything changes.

The game is on the instant Luke spots Penelope “Nell” Carpenter. He’s out for the money, yes, but getting a little dirty with Nell doesn’t sound too bad either. Everyone knows he’s not the marrying kind, so it’s a good thing it’s just for show. God knows he’s the worst guy his pretty wife should pick for real.

They have nothing in common, but if they want the grand prize, they’ll have to beat out eight other couples. Proving that total opposites attract should be easy enough…as long as they don’t fall in love in the process.

He’s the first person who gets me. The first person who took the time to take care of me. And the first person in this world I think I might actually trust.

Katy Evans is another one of my most favorite authors. Ever since reading ”REAL” I have been a huge fan. She writes stories that I can’t help but devour. ”MILLION DOLLAR MARRIAGE” takes us on a fun and steamy adventure with two people who at first, seem to be so completely opposite that I have to admit, I had a hard time believing they could have real chemistry. Luke Cross is the filthy talking sexy bar owner who dropped out of high school at sixteen. Penelope Carpenter comes from an affluent family, has her Ph.D., and is lacking in interpersonal skills. They do have one thing in common—they’re each in serious financial debt. When a commercial announces an audition for a new reality show that promises a prize of a million dollars, both Luke and Penny are eager to sign up. No one knows what the show’s premise is but that prize is too enticing to pass up.

”MILLION DOLLAR MARRIAGE” ends up being a reality game show that is a cross between ”Married at First Sight” & “The Amazing Race”. The contestants must agree to marry the person they’re paired up with and then compete against eight other couples for two weeks full of crazy missions that challenge their endurance and their problem-solving skills. When the two weeks are up will Luke and Penny have found something more precious than the million-dollar jackpot or has it all been an act to win the prize?

Suddenly, he stepped back, breaking the contact, and the surge of loss took her by surprise. As if her body recognized its other half and now refused to live without it. Eyes wide, lips swollen, she stared at him with rising horror, recognizing what they’d just done. They’d ruined everything.

The romance between Harper Bishop and Aidan O’Connor was an incredibly slow burn. These are two people who each have been burned by their painful past. They’re both loners who enjoy the companionship of animals over people. I found their characters to be relatable. The plot is what held my attention. Harper runs the family Horse rescue farm. She has a huge and tender heart when it comes to animals in need. Aidan is a professional horse trainer who was forced to leave Ireland to rebuild his reputation in the horse racing circuit. He convinces Harper and her siblings to hire him on in order to help train the beautiful horse Harper rescued, named Phoenix, who has severe behavioral issues.

Honestly, I was more invested in Phoenix’s story and the adorable friendship that develops between him and the sweet little goat that Harper and Aidan rescued from nearly being euthanized. I fell instantly in love with little Captain Hoof, with his anxiety issues and who only felt a sense of calmness when wearing a chicken costume and being near his best buddy Phoenix. Once Harper and Aidan stopped fighting their feelings for each other, I started to care about the couple as well. These two were perfect for each other and their little family of fur babies made the couple endearing. If you’re looking for a sweet and sexy romance with an engaging plot, this one is sure to please.
