REVIEW – DON’T GO THERE (Awkward Love, #5) by Missy Johnson

SYNOPSIS

Vodka should come with a warning:

Mixing with Karaoke will make you do stupid shit, like sing that song you wrote when you were fourteen, about the boy who broke your heart.

At least he didn’t see it.

Oh wait. He did.

I should’ve just stayed home. The only reason I came was to stop Lily from doing something stupid, like crash her ex-boyfriend’s wedding.

When I open my hotel room door to find Adam standing there, that sexy smirk tells me he’s hasn’t changed. He’s still the same arrogant asshole who made my childhood hell.

He insists on driving us home, and while he’s the last person I want to be around, he and I both know it’s a bad idea for Lily to be anywhere near that wedding.

I’m on the road trip from hell with my heartbroken cousin, and the one guy I can’t stand.

What was I thinking?

DON’T GO THERE is a crazy and hilarious second chance romance which at times felt like the female version of the blockbuster hit movie, ”The Hangover”. Katie winds up in Vegas after her cousin Lily, convinces her to accompany her, but what she doesn’t know is that Lily’s ex-boyfriend is getting married and she wants to confront him before he walks down the aisle. The girls end up in a Karaoke bar and after having a little too much to drink, Katie gives the performance of a lifetime, singing a song she wrote when she was fourteen for her high school crush. The next day she finds out her cousin video recorded her singing and that it’s been sent to everyone on Lily’s contact list.

Adam, the high-school crush, happens to be in Vegas as well. He’s actually the best-man at Julian’s, Lily’s ex, wedding. A friend shows him the video of Katie and soon enough he’s on a mission to find Katie and her friends, under the guise of keeping them away from Julian. He has ulterior motives and the story got a little confusing until almost three-quarters of the way through it.

I think the comedic banter between Katie and Adam, and the plot with regards to Lily trying to break up the wedding was truly enough to make this an entertaining story. There wasn’t really a need for all of the other twists in the plot, and Adam’s tragic family history felt out of place. The story would have been even better if the author had stuck with the comedic aspect.

I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy this one though. There were several times that I laughed out loud and I loved the chemistry between Adam and Katie. The ”Awkward Love”series is one of my favorites written by Missy Johnson.

REVIEW – ACROSS THE HORIZON by Aly Martinez

SYNOPSIS

“Sometimes love happens when you least expect it.” That was what my husband’s mistress told me the day I found out about their affair.

I didn’t believe it until five minutes later when mouth-watering celebrity chef Tanner Reese walked up, tossed his arm around my shoulders, and told my cheating husband to take a hike.

Tanner and I couldn’t have been more different. He spent his weekends at clubs, rubbing elbows with fellow A-listers. I spent mine in yoga pants with cheese boards and a glass of wine—or six.

Our relationship shouldn’t have worked, but it did. That is until Tanner proved to me that even though love happens when you least expect it…

So does heartbreak.

”ACROSS THE HORIZON” is a spin-off of the Darkest Sunriseduet. The couple in this story is Porter’s younger brother and Charlotte’s best friend. We met Tanner and Rita in the previous story and knew that they became romantically involved but never got their backstory until now. Their romance starts at about the same time that Porter and Charlotte’s did, but without all the crazy drama, and luckily we don’t have to relive it in this book!

Rita meets Tanner not long after her marriage falls apart when she finds out her husband has been having an affair. All signs would point to Tanner being a rebound for Rita, but as the story unfolds it becomes clear that these two were meant to be.

While I thought the story was enjoyable it was nowhere near as good as the previous books. There was a little bit of drama and angst, and a good dose of steam, but the story was missing that spark I come to expect from an Aly Martinez book. It’s still worth picking up for those who are fans of this author. I did love Tanner and I think readers are going to fall for him as well.

REVIEW – JOCK RULE (Jock Hard, #2) by Sara Ney

SYNOPSIS

Kip Carmichael is no pretty boy.

He’s a rough. Dirty. Giant. Hair so unruly, and a beard so thick, his friends on the team call him Sasquatch.

The first time Sasquatch lays eyes on Theodora “Teddy” Johnson across the keg at a party one night on Jock Row, she’d been relegated to the sidelines by her jock hungry “friends.”

Week-after-week, he watches beautiful but bashful Teddy getting overshadowed, and overlooked. Sasquatch finally broad shoulders his way through the crowd, offering to to be her hairy godmother. But the minute their eyes meet? He’s a goner.

Teaching her the RULES for winning a jock will be the easy part. Not falling in love with her is going to be a losing game.

JOCK RULE starts off almost exactly the same as JOCK HARD did. At first, I was a little annoyed. The only difference was that the Hero was a rugby player instead of a baseball player, and it seemed to take entirely too long for things to spark between the couple but once it did, the story started to get interesting.

Kip Carmichael is huge and extremely hairy. His hair is usually up in a messy bun with different colored scrunchies and his beard is long and out of control. But underneath the forest of hair is one seriously fine specimen of a man. He comes from a very wealthy family and got tired of girls pursuing him because of his bank account. So becoming a living breathing Sasquatch is his way of scaring all the women away.

Kip sees a cute but somewhat awkward girl at the Rugby team’s house party three Fridays in a row and decides to take pity on her by offering his services as her ”hairy godmother”. He thinks she could use some tips on how to attract the opposite sex. They fall into an easy friendship. Their easy-going banter is silly and hilarious. Kip is just a gigantic softie. At times he seems almost as innocent and naïve as Teddy. I loved their chemistry.

Things between Kip and Teddy start off innocent and their interactions are hilarious but there is incredible chemistry between them and the steamy scenes are off the charts HOT! Overall, I thought this story was a pretty fun, sweet and sexy good time!

This is my last arc for 2018! Not a bad way to end the year with regards to blog reviews!

REVIEW – HOTSHOT DOC by R.S. Grey

SYNOPSIS

Dr. Russell has a bad reputation around our hospital. The scrub techs say he’s cold-blooded, the nurses say he’s too cocky for his own good, and the residents say he’s the best surgeon in the world—really, just a swell guy!—on the off chance he’s within earshot.

I try to avoid him and his temper at all costs. It’s just as easy to admire his sexy, grip-it-while-he’s ravishing-you hair and chiseled jaw from a healthy distance, preferably from the other end of the hallway half-hidden behind a plant.

Unfortunately, my plan crumbles when my trusty ol’ boss decides to swap his white coat for a Hawaiian shirt. His retirement leaves me with two terrible options: switch specialties and spend months retraining, or take an open position as Dr. Russell’s surgical assistant.

That means I have to stand near him in the OR for hours on end and anticipate his every need without letting his biting words and bad attitude intimidate me. Oh, and as if that’s not difficult enough, my silly crush on him—the one I’ve tried to stomp on until it disappears—might just be reciprocated.

It’s fine.
I’m fine.

I take my job seriously. There will be no smoldering bedroom eyes across the operating table, no angry almost-kisses in the storage closet. (Well, no more of those.)

What’s the phrase? An apple a day keeps the doctor away?
Maybe I should go for a whole damn bushel.

*****FIVE STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I’m shaking as if he has me on the edge of a cliff. One single finger could push me over. I’d tumble down, and right now, there’s no way to know what awaits me at the bottom. Pain, love, heartache, elation—each is as likely as the last and I can’t willingly do this to myself. I can’t give myself over to a man who has the power to upend my life so easily.

HOTSHOT DOC is yet another FIVE STAR READ by the amazingly talented R.S. Grey! Over the past few years, I have become one of her die-hard fans. If you’ve never read anything by this author, I highly recommend that you give her a chance. My heart is brimming with love for Matt and Bailey’s story. For those of you who enjoy a good ”enemies-to-lovers” romance, this is one that you need to add to your TBRs ASAP! A story that has an engaging plot, swoon-worthy Hero, and a Heroine who steals your heart, HOTSHOT DOC just became one of my top favorite books by R.S. Grey!

You can’t help but fall for Bailey. She’s sweet, silly, and has such a gentle soul. She has been the sole guardian of her fourteen-year-old sister for several years and there isn’t anything she wouldn’t do to make sure that Josie is healthy and happy, including putting her social life on hold. Truth be told, no one has really caught her eye until a certain “McDreamy” like doctor started working at her hospital. Dr. Matt Russell is every woman’s fantasy, but he’s notorious for his hot temper and for making most of his physician assistants quit because none of them can handle his verbal abuse and high standards. Bailey ends up becoming his latest victim when the doctor she’s worked with for the past four years retires and recommends Bailey to Dr. Russell, who happens to have just scared away his latest physician assistant.

Matt and Bailey don’t get off to the greatest start in the beginning, but there’s an instant chemistry that’s hard to deny between them. No matter how terrific Bailey is at being his PA, it doesn’t seem to curb his rude behavior towards her and it’s driving her insane because she wants so badly for him to like her and to receive validation from Matt that she’s doing a kick-ass job. Once the truth behind his belligerent attitude is revealed things quickly heat up between Matt and Bailey.

Matt has many layers of sweetness buried underneath his cold exterior and the two quickly get swept up in a whirlwind romance. As with all stories, there’s something just around the corner waiting to burst the couples’ perfect bubble. Is their love strong enough to face the challenges ahead of them?

Here are my overall ratings:

Hero: 5
Heroine: 5
Plot: 5
Angst: 4
Steam: 4.5
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5

REVIEW – ONLY LOVE (One and Only, #3) by Melanie Harlow

SYNOPSIS

A gorgeous former Marine with a tortured soul.

The beautiful, compassionate therapist living next door.

A meddlesome grandma determined to get them together.

I was expecting a proposal on my birthday, and I got dumped instead.

How could I have been so clueless?

Grams knew exactly how to distract me.

The “cute boy next door” who’s been helping her with yard work clearly needs a little therapy. Who better to call than her newly single therapist granddaughter?

She even fakes dementia to get me to visit, and now that I’m here she’s doing everything in her power to throw us together.

Not that I’m complaining. Ryan is the sexiest man I’ve ever met–I mean the full package, from the chiseled jaw to the massive shoulders to the rippling abs. (And yes, his package is full, and he knows exactly how to deliver it.) He makes me want to get out of my head and follow my heart. He makes me want to take chances I never thought I’d take.

He also makes me want to take my clothes off. A lot.

But he’s moody and challenging–one minute he’s an open book, and the next he’s completely closed off. He holds me like he’ll never let go, but insists he wants to be alone.

Some wounds are so deep, only love can heal them.

How can I convince him to let me try?

I watched the candlelight play over her beautiful features and felt an ache deep in my chest. Regret that I couldn’t give her all she deserved. Anguish that soon she’d be out of my life, probably forever. And longing—fierce, uncontrollable longing to hold her in my arms and never let her go.

”ONLY LOVE” is the third and final installment of the ”One and Only” series. We are finally getting the eldest Devine sister’s story. Throughout the series, Stella seemed to be the level-headed, kind of boring sister. She’s been in a year-long relationship with a man in which they’ve never once had sex and Stella has always stood behind her beliefs that sex isn’t the key to a successful coupling. It looks like all she needed was to meet the right man who would obliterate all her misguided notions. All she needed was a little ”help”from her adorable and sneaky ninety-two-year-old grandmother.

Stella’s just been dumped by her boyfriend on her birthday. She spends a little time wallowing in self-pity, until her grandmother calls and asks her to come pay a visit. Little does she know, her grams has a match-making grand plan that involves her very sexy and single next door neighbor and her last remaining beautiful and single grand-daughter.

Ryan is an ex-marine, who has had a hard time acclimating to civilian life. His fiancé left him because of his inability to show true emotions. He’s not suffering from PTSD, he just has trouble grappling with the things he has had to do in the name of his country and then being back home in the states where he gets a mixture of opposing receptions from people when they learn he is a recent war veteran.

The moment Ryan and Stella meet, you can feel the electricity in the air. Grams is very wise and has gotten it right but these two are stubborn, and so it’s going to take a lot of intervention by this cute little old cupid to make them realize they’ve finally found their true other halves.

The ”One and Only” series has been my favorite so far by Melanie Harlow. I’m looking forward to the spin-off series and have a feeling everyone is going to fall in love with the Hero in book one! For those of you who love romances with a single father, I believe we are in for a real treat!!

REVIEW – MY FAVORITE HALF-NIGHT STAND by Christina Lauren

SYNOPSIS

From the New York Times bestselling author that “hilariously depicts modern dating” (Us Weekly) comes a sexy romantic comedy about online dating, and its many, many fails.

With a world-famous speaker at their university, Millie Morris and her four woefully single male colleagues make a pact that they’ll all find dates. Unfortunately, Millie has more success helping them make matches online than she does navigating the onslaught of lewd pics in her own feed. But when she creates a fictional name for a new account, Millie finds herself vying for the online attention of a man she sees every day in the flesh.

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****4.5 STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

Postsex, I feel like a well-used glove, a warm blanket, a body pillow. Soft and warm and sated. But inside, somewhere deeper, I’m a knot of angst. I want Millie. I think I’m falling in love with her. And she just does not see me that way at all.

I honestly can’t get enough of Christina Lauren’s writing. They are one of the greatest collaborative duos in the romance genre today. I fell in love with this super funny, sexy and heartbreakingly angsty ”friends-to-lovers” story. The supporting characters are terrific and endearing in their own super quirky ways. I’m not going to deny that it was Reid who stole my heart from the beginning. He comes in at a very close second behind Will Sumner from ”Beautiful Player”. Reid and Millie’s story felt a little reminiscent of Will and Hanna’s.

”MY FAVORITE HALF-NIGHT STAND” is about two besties who have the greatest friendship but underneath the layers there exists a deeply rooted attraction. Neither seems to be self-aware enough to figure out what is developing right in front of their very eyes. The two decide to join an online dating service with three of their other friends, in hopes of landing a date for an upcoming gala event for work. But somehow during the attempt of finding love online, Reid and Millie end up having one passionate night of steamy sex together. The two chalk it up to a one time deal because they’re not willing to risk the friendship, but then there’s an added twist, when Millie creates a ”fake” account on the dating site and Reid ends up being a 98% match with her.

They end up carrying on with an online connection via emails but Millie never reveals her true identity to Reid. Her online “self” is not necessarily a lie. It’s the only time she is REAL with Reid. She lets him in on all her fears and sorrows. Things she never lets anyone see in her everyday life. Life has been hard on her from early childhood and her only coping mechanism was to bury her feelings and to keep silent. Reid is torn because he is becoming aware that he’s falling for Millie, but she’s emotionally closed off, and he knows there’s no chance for their relationship to survive if she is unable to trust him and let him in all the way. Then there’s “Catherine”, whom he’s never met in person yet he feels a true connection to, but somehow it feels like he’s being unfaithful to Millie.

Millie struggles with her feelings for Reid. There were many times, I wanted to shake the two of them. For two highly intelligent people, they were beyond dense. That is what made this story so painfully angsty. You keep hoping that they’ll wake up and fight for what’s been right in front of them for so long and then it gets so incredibly painful when things blow up and you know that it’s coming because…how could it not??!!

She brought me up to her level just by allowing me to be in her presence. The name I was given at birth, King—it had always been a joke. Until Elizabeth Dyson stood beside me and finally made me royalty.

The conclusion to the ”Dirty Sexy Games” duet takes steamy to a whole other level! It has been several months since I listened to the first book on audible, so I must admit I forgot some of the plot, but it didn’t take long for it to all come back to me.

I don’t know why, but I had this feeling when I first started this book, that I was going to be disappointed. I was completely wrong. I loved Weston and Lizzy’s journey. I think reading instead of listening to this one, made the experience so much more enjoyable for me. I loved that their relationship went through a transformation and I felt the connection between the two in this installment as opposed to how I didn’t really feel the chemistry in book one.

I ended up empathizing for these characters and hoping that they’d figure a way to make things work out for them in the end.

REVIEW – PUCKED LOVE (Pucked, #6) by Helena Hunting

SYNOPSIS

As an NHL player, relationships haven’t been my thing. Shrouded in secrecy and speculation, they never last very long. But then that’s what happens when you require an NDA before the first date.

Until Charlene. She’s like a firefly. She’s elusive, and if you catch her she’ll burn bright, but keeping her trapped dulls her fire and dims her beauty.

I caught her. And as much as I might want to keep her, I’ll never put the lid on her jar. Not at the risk of losing her. So I’ve let her set the rules in our relationship.

But as long hidden secrets expose us both, I discover exactly how fragile Charlene is, and how much I need her.

We’re all broken. We’re all messed up. Some more than others. Me more than most.

I kiss her, and my whole world seems to come together and fall apart at the same time. She’s everything. She’s all the missing pieces I need to feel whole.

The ”Pucked” series is my absolute most favorite sports romance series of all time. I will always put Helena Hunting in the highest regard for creating Alex ”Super MC” and Violet Waters. All of the characters are incredible, but those two will forever hold a special place in my heart. But I can’t deny that I have loved every couple’s journey and couldn’t wait to finally get to Darren and Charlene’s story. They’ve always been in the background and seemed a bit mysterious to me, so it was a pleasant surprise that their story was filled with so much heart and that I even got a little emotional towards the end.

This is the last installment of the series. It’s so very hard to have to say goodbye. I don’t want to do it. I know there will be several re-reads in my future. What makes this series special, aside from how the Heroes worship the women they love, are the amazing friendships between all of them. Through thick and thin they are there for each other. These are some of the best supporting characters I’ve come across in a series and I have treasured every moment that I got to spend with them.

REVIEW – GIGOLO: INSIDE THE SECRET WORLD OF THE SUPER RICH by Ben Foster & Clifford Thurlow

SYNOPSIS

Ben Foster works double shifts for minimum wage at a care home for boys with learning disabilities. With a young wife and three children under the age of five, he is ground down by poverty and debt.

With a small inheritance from his gran, Ben qualifies as a masseur and is introduced to the mysterious ‘committee’ – a group of society women with one thing in common: they adore sex and don’t mind paying for it.

With his dark hair, blue eyes, and robust appendage that the ladies dub Big Ben, the shy careworker is drawn into a world of private jets, Parisian sex clubs, state secrets, endless lines of cocaine and orgies in country houses with a Who’s Who of celebrities, MPs and the international super rich.

Ben Foster’s true life story explores the extravagance of old and new wealth in today’s Britain and reveals how the super rich can find no way to relieve their boredom other than with multiple partners and through sex lives that grow ever more kinky and erotic.

As Ben’s bank account swells, he acquires a taste for the good life. But what will happen when his wife discovers he has been giving more than just massages…?

*****Dee’s Review*****

FIVE BRILLIANT STARS *****

WOW! What a fantastic read!

What I loved most about it, is that it’s one hundred percent real. Ben Foster invites the reader into his life as a male sex worker, giving us every detail of his alluring and complicated story.

You might love it, or you might hate it, but of one thing I’m sure, anyone who reads this book will be highly entertained and it will be hard, if not impossible to put it down.

Married, and a father of three, Ben Foster was struggling to make ends meet, even after working two different jobs. He had inherited some money from his late grandmother and used it to go to school, and became a certified massage specialist, but it wasn’t easy getting clients.

One of his regular clients was a rich man, and Ben would see him once a week in his state. The guy wasn’t very friendly and looked down upon Ben, but one day there was a group of rich and powerful ladies visiting the client’s mother and they all took interest in the dark-haired, blue-eyed masseuse.

After that afternoon, Ben’s life changed forever.
Massage appointments all came with special instructions and many perks. Expensive clothes, beautiful restaurants and more money than he ever saw. Suddenly he was able to keep his family’s refrigerator always stocked, his kids well clothed, and even take them all out on holiday.

For me, the topic in this book opened up so many questions. We always assume we would always do the right thing, pick the right choices, but when life becomes difficult and then you are presented with an opportunity, what do you do, do you take it and repent later, or do you just walk away?

I enjoyed this book very much, it is exciting and bold. The only problem is, I got very attached to the story, so naturally, after I was finished, I still wanted more.

If you are looking for an amazing read that will tease all your senses and will keep you turning the pages until you are done, but are left panting for more, READ THIS BOOK.

REVIEW – BE MINE by Jen Frederick

SYNOPSIS

At twenty years old, Lainey Valdez has made enough mistakes for a lifetime. She’s gotten herself knocked up by a cruel, uncaring man, lost her home, and found herself outside of a ramshackle bar with a crying baby and a broken purse.

When Nick Jackson, the Mustangs’ new rookie quarterback, swoops in like her savior, all she wants to do is fall into his arms. There’s just one problem… she’s sworn off football players and men for good.

He’s charming, eager, and sexy as hell, but Nick’s not the man for her. No matter what her body says.

Besides, she’s got bigger problems to fix such as how she’s going to feed her child, where she’s going to lay her head, and how to stay hidden from her ex. There’s no room for flirtation, a hand on the small of her back, or even the way he makes her daughter smile.

Nick Jackson isn’t in her plan now or ever.

Right?

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

BE MINE is the second book in the Jackson Boys series. While I haven’t read ”The Charlotte Chronicles” yet, it wasn’t hard at all to follow the storyline since Charlotte and Nate are secondary characters in this story. Sports Romances are one of my top favorite romance genres but I love it when there’s also a heavy dose of comedy thrown in. That wasn’t the case with this one. The plot is at times, gritty and dark. I wasn’t really all that surprised as I have come to expect a bit of the gritty side when reading a Jen Frederick book. She delivered a nail-biting plot that had me on the edge of my seat.

Nick Jackson is a rookie NFL Quarterback for the Dallas Mustangs who falls instantly in love with Lainey Valdez and her precocious little daughter, Cassy. Lainey is a young single mother who made some bad choices in her youth and was seduced by another football quarterback who played upon her naivety and insecurities. Although she regrets the mistakes she’s made, she wouldn’t change a thing since it resulted in the birth of her daughter. Lainey is wary of men, especially football players. While she is attracted to Nick, she has no intention of getting romantically involved with him. Her main priority is providing a safe and nurturing home for her daughter. What she doesn’t realize is that Nick is one of the good guys.

There is undeniable chemistry between the two and I was instantly falling for Nick. He seemed almost too perfect, but that’s ok in the world of romance novels. We get a ton of angst and even some thrilling suspenseful moments as the story progresses.
