REVIEW – SHACKING UP by Helena Hunting

SYNOPSIS

Ruby Scott is months behind on rent and can’t seem to land a steady job. She has one chance to turn things around with a big audition. But instead of getting her big break, she gets sick as a dog and completely bombs it in the most humiliating fashion. All thanks to a mysterious, gorgeous guy who kissed—and then coughed on—her at a party the night before.

Luckily, her best friend might have found the perfect opportunity; a job staying at the lavish penthouse apartment of hotel magnate Bancroft Mills while he’s out of town, taking care of his exotic pets. But when the newly-evicted Ruby arrives to meet her new employer, it turns out Bane is the same guy who got her sick.

Seeing his role in Ruby’s dilemma, Bane offers her a permanent job as his live-in pet sitter until she can get back on her feet. Filled with hilariously awkward encounters and enough sexual tension to heat a New York City block, Shacking Up, from NYT and USA Today bestselling author Helena Hunting, is sure to keep you laughing and swooning all night long.

*****FIVE STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I scan his naked body, wishing like hell for a photographic memory, because his body is a gift from the heavens. And that erection is magnificent.

SHACKING UP, the latest romantic comedy by Helena Hunting is guaranteed to be her next huge hit! It’s packed with Hunting’s signature brand of humor and is delectably schmexy! There’s a reason why she is one of my top favorite authors. I never doubt that when I pick up one of her books that I am going to be taken on a wildly fun and insanely comical journey. I not only have another book to add to my favorites shelf, but I also have another book boyfriend who took a piece of my heart. I’m pretty sure Bancroft Mills will be melting plenty of hearts and panties once this book is released!

Ruby Scott is an aspiring actress who has been living in New York City since graduating from college. She’s struggling to make ends meet but determined to get a role in a Broadway or Off-Broadway show because the alternative would be a living nightmare. Her father is a Billionaire who owns a highly successful pharmaceutical company whose wonder drug helps men with erectile dysfunction. He has frowned upon Ruby’s career choice and has asked her time and again to come back home to Rhode Island where he will set her up with a job in the family business. This is not an option for Ruby as she wants to make it on her own doing something that she loves more than life.

Ruby comes from money but she finds it hard to relate to people who run in those high society social circles. She’s vivacious and tends to say what’s on her mind at any given moment. She literally has no filter. Her luck has recently taken a turn for the worse when she ends up in a passionate kiss with one seriously gorgeous stranger at an engagement party. It was a case of mistaken identity due to poor lighting outside the bathroom and the guy was high on cold medicine because he was battling a nasty case of the flu. She ends up getting violently ill the next morning and utterly bombs during her audition for an off-off Broadway play. Not only does this make her financial situation even more dire, but she’s also served an eviction notice for being delinquent on her rent for the past three months. Ruby is about to lose all hope when her Bestie tells her about her Fiance’s cousin who is going to be out of the country for five months and needs someone to babysit his pets. She thinks that he would be willing to let Ruby house sit for him as well. When Ruby gets invited to dinner with her Bestie who is meeting her Fiance and his cousin, she couldn’t be more surprised to see the handsome stranger who gave her the most amazing kiss of her life as well as the nastiest case of the flu.

Bancroft Mills is an ex-professional rugby player and heir to a huge hotel chain. He hasn’t lived in New York for several years and now he’s looking to learn the family business and keep permanent residence in NYC. He is pleasantly surprised when he crosses paths with the beautiful girl he shared that unforgettable kiss with. He’s also beyond remorseful when he learns of her predicament due to the fact that he gave her the flu. Bane asks Ruby to house sit and care for his furry friends while he’s away in London. He helps her move in the next day and the two become roommates for a few days before his trip. It becomes apparent rather quickly that Ruby and Bane are wildly attracted to each other and keeping things platonic is one of the biggest challenges they’ve ever had to face. Somehow they manage to keep their libidos in check but over the next five months their sexy flirting over texts and facetime ends up building a close relationship between them and the possibility of things turning serious is thrilling and a bit scary as well. Ruby wants to be with Bane but not while she’s living in his condo and is receiving a salary from him for taking care of his fur babies. She’s very independent and refuses to let any man take care of her.

Will these two be able to work out their housing and employment issues or will an unfortunate misunderstanding between Ruby and Bane end up tearing the couple apart?

This was honestly such an incredibly enjoyable read for me. I love it when a book can transport me to another world and during that short period, the stress and monotony of everyday life are forgotten. Helena Hunting’s books always take me to my happy place.

4.5 Stars!

Ruby Scott is a beautiful 24 yr. old woman who comes from money. Her family owns Scott Pharmaceuticals & she grew up privileged in Rhode Island. She attended prep school & college with her best friend Amie, & now lives in New York following her dream of being an actress. Much to fathers disappointment, her degree is in theater. It’s her passion, & she just wants to do what she loves. The problem is it doesn’t always pay the bills & she struggles. She’s behind on rent, currently unemployed, and on the verge of being homeless. She wants to make it on her own & will do anything not to return home to work for her father. It would mean she failed. She has one last chance to turn things around with a big audition.

The night before her audition she attends her best friend Amie’s engagement party where a gorgeous stranger kisses her & then coughs on her. She wakes up sick & bombs her audition. She is panicking about her issues when her friend comes up with the perfect solution to all her problems. Amie knows someone with a luxurious penthouse whose going out of town & needs someone to watch his animals. Ruby is stunned when she meets her new possible employer & it’s none other than her awesome kisser.

Her mystery man is Bancroft Mills aka Bane. His family owns Mills hotels. He spent the last seven years playing professional rugby till he blew out his knee. Now his rugby career is over & his only option is working for the family business in hotel management. Working for his father will require a lot of travel, & will take him away from his pets. When he finds out how he got Ruby sick, he feels responsible & offers her the job of taking care of his pets till she can get back on her feet. She needs somewhere to live & he needs a pet sitter, so it’s the perfect arrangement for them both.

While Bane is away he & Ruby talk a lot. They really get to know each other & he finds her lack of filter & sense of humor refreshing. The longer he’s away, the closer they become. Soon all the late night chats & sexual innuendos turn into a real connection. By the time he returns home they are absolutely dying for one another & can’t resist any longer. These two are on fire for each other & it’s hot as hell!

-Jesus. This man is like a nuclear bomb of sexy, just waiting to go off.

-“This is what I want. You. The way you’re looking at me right now. This feeling right here.”

They soon are both extremely attached to each other & wanting more, but things are complicated since they are technically roommates & she’s still working for him.

This was my first book by Helena Hunting & it was fabulous! I love her fun, flirty writing style that’s full of humor, and super sexy. I adored Bane & Ruby and just loved this book! Can’t wait to read more by this author & hope we get a book for Lexington & Amie. :))

*****Dee’s Review*****

4.5 Sparkling Stars*****

A rockstar romance written by the wonderful pen of Erin Watt. Funny, complicated and totally dazzling. Prepare to be transported to a wonderful world of music, love and second chances.

Oakley Ford is a teen pop sensation, loved by all, the guy can have anything and anyone he wants. He hasn’t been able to put a new record out in the last two years, he hasn’t been able to find his true voice, there’s is much he wants to share with the world through his music, but he doesn’t know how. The problem is that he has been looking in all the wrong places. Excessive partying and quick and meaningless relationships have given him nothing but exhaustion. His record label has started to notice a decline in his numbers and they are pressuring him to get his act together, stop with the wild parties and get back into the studio to cut a new record that will keep him at the top of the charts.

Since Oakley is not able to find a solution to his problem, his manager has come up with the idea to find him a wholesome girl that he can fake date, and that way they will at least fix the party boy image in the public eye, and perhaps help him calm down a bit. The chosen girl is Vaughn Bennett, a seventeen-year-old high school graduate, who is taking a year off from college so she can help her family’s financial situation.

Vaughn lost both her parents two years ago in a car accident. Her older sister has been in charge of taking care of her and her younger twin brothers, working hard to provide for them. Vaughn has been lost ever since her parents died, she doesn’t have any clear direction for the future. When the opportunity to make a lot of money by dating the gorgeous heartthrob Oakley Ford for a year is presented to her, she hesitates at first but the future of her siblings is the most important thing to Vaughn, so she accepts.

Vaughn and Oakley couldn’t possibly be any more opposite from each other. While he grew up with money and everything he could ever wish for, Vaughn has always had to learn to work hard for life’s essentials. But one thing Vaughn has that Oakley doesn’t and he can’t ever buy; is the love of family. The more they fight, the more they are attracted to each other, and as it turns out there is a deep understanding between them. They seem to be the missing piece to the puzzle that is their life. They fall in love organically and it is such a beautiful romance, but can their love survive the differences of their worlds?

When It’s Real is one of those books that grabs your heart tightly from the moment you start reading it. The plot was bold and deeply beautiful and even though there are a million rockstar books out there, this one is definitely one you won’t ever forget.

*****4.5 STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Authors}

I don’t know when that happened, but somewhere along the line Vaughn went from the girl I was forced to have on my arm to the girl I want to have in my life.

Erin Watt fans prepare to fall head over heels in love with their latest collaborative masterpiece! These two authors have struck gold again with WHEN IT’S REAL. I am not particularly a huge fan of YA but when it’s done right even I can’t deny how enjoyable these romances can be. This enemies to lovers story between America’s #1 Pop Idol and a regular girl with absolutely no ties to the celebrity world was pure unadulterated fun for this particular reader.

Oakley Ford is going through a rough patch in his life. It’s been two years since he’s released an album and his creative juices haven’t been flowing. Lately, he’s been indulging in liquor and women and his bad boy antics have been providing enough fodder for the sleazy tabloids. Oakley desperately wants to work with one of the industry’s most sought after producers but his current reputation makes him an undesirable prospect. His manager is forcing him to get his act together and to do away with his bad boy behavior. The plan is to romantically link Oak to a down to earth girl who doesn’t have ties to the industry. He sees a picture of one of his employee’s sister on her desk and decides this girl is the key to boosting Oak’s image again.

Vaughn Bennett is a seventeen-year-old girl who was forced to grow up sooner than most teenagers when both of her parents were killed in a car accident. She graduated from High School a year early so that she could start working to help her older sister take care of their family which consists of their younger twin brothers, Vaughn, and her sister Paisley. When she is approached by Oakley’s management team with the proposal to become his girlfriend for a year and that it comes with a rather large salary, there is no way she can turn it down knowing that it would help to take care of her family.

Vaughn and Oakley’s first meeting is anything but cordial and neither make a really good first impression on each other. Oakley comes off as being narcissistic and condescending, while Vaughn seems to be headstrong and a bit of a spitfire. She actually intrigues Vaughn because for the first time he meets a girl who isn’t falling all over herself to be near him. While Vaughn thinks Oakley is a conceited jerk, she also used to have a huge crush on him and can’t seem to stop her stupid hormones from going haywire whenever he sings or gives her a smoldering look.

While both Oak and Vaughn start to feel something more for each other, the tiny doubt in the back of their minds that what they have is still “fake” keeps them from taking the risk and confessing what is truly in their hearts. When they finally take the plunge and give in to their feelings for the first time in their lives they’re feeling what could possibly be true love but can these two make it work when there are countless of people who would rather see them fall apart?

WHEN IT’S REAL is currently available! It’s a definite must-read!

4.5 He’s Worth Everything Stars!

Oakley Ford is a gorgeous 19 yr. old teen rock star living in LA. He’s the child of famous movie stars & has always been in the public eye. He’s been a young celebrity since he signed his first contract at the age of 14. Lately, the tabloids keep exploiting all his wild nights & partying, and his image has taken a hit. He just wants to make music he loves, & recently it all seems to fall flat. He’s experiencing a creative block, & hasn’t recorded anything decent since his last album a couple years ago. He’s had unreal success but doesn’t want to become a washed up pop star.

He’s trying to turn over a new leaf, & wants to be taken seriously. His dream is to work with his favorite music producer. His team decides it’s time for an intervention. He needs a full image makeover to show the world he’s settled down. The perfect way to do this is to find a good girl. An ordinary, normal girl the public can relate to.

Vaughn Bennett is a 17 yr. old girl who’s a part-time waitress & a devoted sister. After losing her parents, Vaughn & her siblings are barely keeping their heads above water. When a unique opportunity she’d normally never even consider comes her way, Vaughn decides to go for it. She’s offered a lot of money to be pop star Oakley Ford’s fake girlfriend for a year. She has the wholesome girl next door look. She’s the perfect nonfamous, down to earth girl for him to pretend date. She decides her family could really use the money & financial security.

Vaughn thinks fake dating Oakley Ford shouldn’t be too bad, but then she meets him. He’s a shallow, arrogant, conceited, egotistical jerk who thinks he’s better than everyone else. She’s totally unimpressed with the star. They initially clash, but then Vaughn begins seeing glimpses of the real Oak. He’s kind, & the more she gets to know the real him, the more she likes him. Soon she doesn’t feel like she’s pretending anymore, and real feelings are developing.

-I’m so into this girl it’s not even funny. And I know she’s into me, too.

-Under my mouth, she melts. Her own lips part and she kisses me back. And it’s everything I’d imagined. Better than fifty thousand people shouting your name. Better than a sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd singing your lyrics back to you. Better than the greatest song ever sung.

-“You’re beautiful. Every day I’m with you is brighter and more exciting than the last.”

To the outside, Oakley Ford has it all. A beautiful beachfront home, millions of adoring fans, a huge bank account, & a fabulous girlfriend. Lately, all he wants is to make new music & be with Vaughn. He loves spending time with her and is tired of playing make believe. His feelings are real, & he wants to be with her. She completely owns his heart.

Vaughn is caught up in Oak’s world of Hollywood, publicists, & being in the spotlight. Everything is confusing & overwhelming. The only thing she knows for sure is she wants Oak to be hers & she doesn’t want money to get in the way. Can this couple make it work, or will the media & outside influences try to destroy them?

I really enjoyed this book & loved Oak. Such a sweet, sexy, swoony rock star! I hope we get a book for Paisley & Ty next. :))

My Best Friend’s Ex by Meghan Quinn
Publication Date: June 1st, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

When I found an eviction notice taped on my apartment door, I had two options: find a comfortable cardboard box to call home, or move in with Tucker Jameson.

Seeing that cardboard makes me feel itchy, I chose the latter. Which shouldn’t be that big of a deal since Tucker is one of my good friends. And because he’s still pining after his ex-girlfriend and I’m trying to finish my nursing degree, there is nothing to worry about in the romance department, making my last semester an easy one to conquer.

Boy, was I wrong.

Rules are set, dinners are made, conversations are had, and a shirtless, swoony roommate walks around in nothing but a pair of black briefs, ruining me for every other man.

Before I know it, I turn into a panting, lust-filled woman begging for Tucker to kiss me, touch me, and show me exactly what is hiding under those briefs.

But with great orgasms, comes great consequences.

Tucker might be my friend and roommate but he’s also my best friend’s ex-boyfriend, making him completely off-limits. At least that’s what my brain is telling me, my heart is speaking an entirely different language.

Excerpt:

“Morning,” Tucker’s deep voice rattles off the cabinets. It’s his morning voice, deeper, throatier—if that makes sense—and I hate to admit it, because he’s just my friend, but sexier.

Once my pupils adjust to the light, I take Tucker in. He’s standing in front of the stove, rubber spatula in hand, wearing a white long-sleeve Henley shirt, the top two buttons undone, a pair of worn jeans with a few paint stains on them, and tan work boots. Sweet Jesus, he makes construction look good. Strap a tool belt around his waist and stick him in front of a camera for the benefit of all womankind.

“Morning,” I say in reply, using the counter to help hold up my tired body. “You’re up early. What time do you have to go into work?”

“Around seven thirty. I like to get an early start before the boys come in.” He looks me up and down, a small smile at the corner of his lips. “You look good.” He motions around his head with his hand. “I really like what you did with your hair.”

I turn toward the window in the kitchen and check out my reflection. Sure enough, my long brown hair looks like a lion’s mane poofed out and framing my face with an abundance of volume. Beautiful.

There is no use in taming it, so I leave my hair as is and turn back toward Tucker. “Not many people can get this kind of height while sleeping.” I pretend to fluff my hair.

“Impressive.” He chuckles and then points to the coffee maker with the spatula. “Coffee is done, mugs are above in the cabinet. Grab me a cup, will ya? Eggs will be done shortly, bacon is warming in the oven.”

I do as directed, thinking it’s kind of cute how he’s including me in on his little morning breakfast. “I didn’t even know you had eggs. I was expecting to hit up Dunkin’ Donuts or Tim Horton’s this morning.”

He turns off the stove and reaches for two plates from the dish rack. “I went to Walmart this morning. Picked up a few things.”

“This morning?” I pour two cups of coffee and turn toward him. “What time did you wake up?”

“Four thirty,” he answers casually. “Got a quick run in, did some weights, took a shower and then went to Walmart.” He fills our plates with bacon and eggs and then nods toward the dining room, plates and silverware in hand. “I have a surprise.”

I follow him to the dining room where he flips on the light and reveals a card table fold-out dining set.

“You got a table.” I chuckle, loving that it’s a fold-out card table with matching chairs. Anything is better than the floor.

“And placemats,” he adds, as he lifts two plastic placemats from one of the chairs. “The options were bleak so I went with dinosaurs for me and Trolls for you. Given the look of your morning hair, Trolls was the right choice.” Clever bastard. He sets them on the table and then puts our plates on top of them.

God, it’s too freaking cute. Chuckling, I take a seat and hand him his coffee. “Look at you getting all domestic. I never thought you would be a placemat kind of man, I stand corrected.”

He rests a napkin on his legs, which are spread drastically, almost the length of the table and leans over to fork some eggs into his mouth. “Didn’t want our food to damage the plastic of this high-class table.” I love the humor in his voice, it reminds me of all the good times we had, before the end of his relationship with Sadie.

“Smart man, you want this table to last.”

“Of course, you don’t see fine furniture like this in houses anymore. Everything has to be so sturdy. What ever happened to rickety furniture and living through a meal with the threat of your food possibly kissing the floor at any point in time?”

“The horror,” I joke.

He looks up at me. Some of his hair is still wet from his shower. Pointing his fork at me he says, “Are you ready to be schooled?”

“Schooled on what?” I take a bite of bacon and my stomach jumps in excitement for finally rewarding it for waking up early. All right, I will admit it, getting out of bed was a smart idea.

“It’s Monday, babe. DJ Hot Cock has his song picked and ready to show you what real music is.”

“When was my music taste ever questioned? I like good music.”

“We’ll see.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone. I watch as he flips through it until he lands on the song he wants to introduce me to. He presses play and sets his phone on the table. The light pickings of a guitar fill the small dining room. I don’t recognize the song, but I like the sound of it so far.

Just as I’m settling in to the sweet pickings of a guitar, the distinct voice of Zac Brown chimes in. I’ve known Tucker for loving EMO growing up, so his choice in a country song is very surprising to me, but when I look up at him, pure hometown country boy sitting across from me, it makes perfect sense.

And then the lyrics hit me. My Old Man. Zac sings about his father, hoping he’s proud of the man he’s become. I’m transported back to a dreary day in Whitney Point, where we grew up, when Sadie called me one Saturday morning. I was getting ready for the day. We were in middle school. Tucker’s dad was killed by a head-on collision, the dad Tucker just reconnected with, the dad Tucker had plans on moving in with to get away from his neglectful mom. Those next few days—and weeks—were a whirlwind of sorrow. Attending his funeral, my first ever funeral, seeing the look of devastation on Tucker’s face, wondering what he might be feeling, trying to channel his hurt, it was so much to take on as a teenager.

Glancing up, I take in Tucker’s expression. He’s lost in the music, in the words, just like me. When the song ends, I lean over and place my hand on his, our eyes meet and there is an unspoken understanding between us. I don’t have to say anything about his dad, about the tragedy we went through so many years ago together as friends. It’s all said between this silent exchange.

”I’ve never wanted another woman the way I want you. I need you to know that’s true. This isn’t surface level. It goes deep, all the way to my bones.”

The conclusion to Boone and Ripley’s story is filled with Meghan March’s signature panty melting steam, heart-stopping moments, and surprising revelations. Several characters from March’s other series make cameo appearances and I am definitely going to make it a point to read their stories!

At the end of book one, a completely false tabloid story has Ripley thinking that her brief affair with Boone has come to an end. She couldn’t be more wrong. Boone is a man on a mission. He’s hell bent on making Ripley his and he’s taking no prisoners. Her stubbornness is no match for Boone’s tenacity and Southern Boy charms!!

Ripley is not only dealing with her complicated relationship with Boone. She’s homeless and although she has a waitressing job, Ripley is at a crossroads in her life. It’s time for her to decide what she wants to do career-wise. When she helps out during a sound check at the bar, everyone is beyond stunned by her amazing vocals. Ripley’s impromptu performance ends up going viral on youtube and it looks as though her path has been chosen for her.

On the personal front, though she tries really hard to keep Boone at a distance, his charms are pretty hard to resist and soon it becomes clear that what they’ve got going is the “real thing”! These two practically burn up the pages of this book with the heat they generate whenever they get their hands on each other!

REVIEW BLITZ – SEXY STRANGER by Kendall Ryan

From New York Times Bestselling Author Kendall Ryan comes a sexy and sizzling, enemies-to-lovers romp with bite.

*****Patty’s Review*****

*****4.5 STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

I wanted this, and I had no idea what had come over me. Maybe it was part of being on the run, but I wanted to sin. Wanted him to make me forget everything—my past, my mistakes…hell, even my own damn name.

This latest standalone by Kendall Ryan is packed full of panty melting steam and is simply an incredibly fun read. I couldn’t get enough of Luke and Charlotte. If you love a good “opposites attract/enemies to lovers” romance, then this one is sure to please you!!

Charlotte Freemont is a New York socialite who is on the run from the life that was mapped out for her by her family and her need to please her parents, who never seemed to have much interest in their daughter. Never could she have guessed that she would find her place in life in a small southern town in Texas, called Shady Grove. When her expensive sports car breaks down in Shady Grove, she is forced to spend a week there while she waits for the local mechanic to fix her car. She runs into a drop dead gorgeous but utterly annoying man and his identical twin while having lunch at the local diner. Both Luke and Charlotte jump to the wrong conclusions about each other based on preconceived stereotypes but when given the chance to spend some time together, they realize just how wrong their first impressions were.

Even though they’re practically at each other’s throats, in the beginning, neither of them can deny the building attraction between them. And soon they realize there is no amount of self-control that can keep them apart. Knowing that Charlotte’s time in Shady Grove is coming to a quick end, they both decide to just have some fun and wildly decadent sex with each other. Charlotte is bound for Los Angeles to start her new life and Luke isn’t about to get his heart broken by another woman who will eventually leave him behind.

Ultimately keeping things casual proves to be quite the challenge when they both start to realize that they fit like two missing pieces to a puzzle. Will secrets and past heartbreaks ruin their chance at an HEA? Or will Charlotte and Luke put their hearts on the line and risk it all for a once in a lifetime kind of love?

Fans of Kendall Ryan are in for a real treat with this one! And if you’ve never read anything by this author, then I highly recommend that you one-click when SEXY STRANGER releases on May 23rd!

Cheater’s Regret by Rachel Van Dyken
Release Date: May 23rd

Genre: Contemporary Romance

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken returns with a smoking-hot story about the satisfaction of plotting revenge on your ex—until he turns your world upside down again.

Austin Rogers’s dreams of domestic bliss involved watching Netflix and eating hot dogs with the love of her life. But then he cheated on her. And dumped her—as if the whole thing was her fault. To maintain her pride and restore her sanity, she decides to get revenge. It feels immensely satisfying to plot her ex’s downfall—but so does kissing him.

Thatch Holloway, a plastic surgeon straight out of residency, knows he ruined the best thing that ever happened to him. But not all cheaters are created equal. He got himself into this messed-up situation—true—but he has his reasons for what happened, and he’d do it all again to protect Austin.

He’s not over her. And she’s not over him.

Austin wants closure, but since Thatch refuses to give it to her, she takes matters into her own hands. She needs to write a human-interest piece for her MBA, so she demands the full plastic-surgery experience. Sparks fly as they’re forced to work together. But Thatch isn’t afraid to play dirty in return. And he’s still hiding something—something that has the power to destroy not only Austin but their second chance at finding forever…

Excerpt:

“You want to do this right now?” He was still whispering as he slowly extended his large perfect surgeon’s hands out to the spider, and suddenly, I realized how this would end.

The spider would bite him.

Thatch’s bite would get infected.

And he wouldn’t be able to do his job.

Or pay off his student loans.

Leaving him in debt.

On the street.

Naked.

Dead.

Thatch was going to die.

“Wait!” I slowly lowered my body to the floor. Fear pounded in my ears as I held out my hands and Charlie lumbered onto my palms. It tickled. It would be nice if I weren’t so terrified of spiders.

Shaking, I walked over to the bucket and gently set him inside, this time, right side up so Thatch could transport him later. Just as I pulled my hands away, something sharp dug into my skin.

“Mother fu—”

Thatch grabbed me just before I collapsed against the floor, hands shaking and pain searing through my right thumb.

Before I knew what was happening, Thatch was carrying me over to the couch. Soft pillows met my back as he grabbed my thumb and held it close to his face.

“Am I going to die?” I whimpered. “Because the Discovery Channel [PS1] said tarantula bites feel like bee stings—they’re liars from the pit of hell!”

Thatch narrowed his eyes at the puffy red mark and then slowly dropped my hand to my side. “You’ll live.”

“Well, that’s encouraging. Don’t I at least get a sticker? A sucker? For saving your life?”

“You?” He chuckled and joined me on the couch. “Saved my life by getting bit by a tarantula?”

“Keep up!” Talking was at least distracting me from the throbbing pain. At least it had dulled a bit, though the fact that I had spider venom in my hand made me cringe. “If it bit you, you wouldn’t be able to do your job.”

He seemed thoughtful. “You mean I’d finally get a vacation where I’m allowed to sleep for longer than three hours?”

“Well, when you put it that way,” I grumbled, and tried to cross my arm, then hissed as pain exploded down my hand.

He grabbed it again. “At least the venom is weak, it’s really just the puncture wound from the spider’s fangs that causes the swelling.”

“Well, that’s disappointing on so many levels. I save your life and I don’t even get to turn into Spider-Man.”

“Tough luck, maybe next time.” He winked.

It was nice.

Sitting with him on the couch.

My legs on his lap.

My eyes focused on his mouth.

Abort! Abort!

I quickly looked away but not fast enough—he caught me staring where I shouldn’t have been staring, and I felt like a complete loser for still lusting after him the way I was.

What was it about Thatch?

Other than everything?

He was brilliant. Hardworking. Gorgeous. And he fought spiders on behalf of a girl he’d dumped.

Damn it.

“This leads nowhere,” he said in a hollow voice. “You understand that, right?”

It was like he’d just handed me the world’s happiest balloon and then popped it with a giant needle.

I was utterly defeated and deflated.

Even though I knew going into this there was no hope of us getting back together, I’d officially turned into that sad, pathetic clinger.

I’d always made fun of “those girls.”

And now “that girl” stared back at me in my own stupid mirror.

I let out a long sigh and nodded slowly. “This is strictly business, Thatch. You know how important this class is to me, how important getting my MBA is to me.”

He looked away, his jaw clenched. “Parents still MIA for the most part?”

I nodded.

“And the reelection, I imagine your dad wants you to join his mayoral campaign again?”

A sick feeling grew in the pit of my stomach.

To my parents, I was a trophy. Something shiny and pretty they could trot out to gain votes from families who appreciated their having taken time out of their busy lives to sire a child.

Granted, I knew my parents loved me.

They just loved me in their own way—the only way they knew how.

“I have to graduate,” I stressed again. “The job market’s fierce out there, and an MBA will help with that. The sooner I graduate, the sooner I can start my own life away from all of this.” I lifted my hands into the air.

This just happened to be a mansion.

A huge mansion.

With three interconnected swimming pools.

A tennis court.

Two movie rooms.

And a bowling alley.

I think I’d prefer anything but this. If I could choose to live in a dump with my parents and we’d be a family or I could have a mansion and scarcely see them.

I’d choose the dump every time.

“I’ll do my best to help you.” He lifted my legs off his lap. “But first, we ride.”

I blushed. I couldn’t help it.

“You can’t do that anymore,” he whispered, his blue eyes piercing. “You can’t blush when I say things like that.”

“Sorry.”

He muttered a curse and walked away. I could have sworn he adjusted himself near the door, but I was too busy hiding behind the couch to fully commit to ogling him.

“Where’s your bike?” he called over his shoulder before turning around.

“In the garage. It’s kind of dark now, though, let’s ride tomorrow after work.” I totally said it without stuttering or blushing.

“Fine.” He looked exhausted.

“Don’t forget the spider.” I pointed at the bucket. “And don’t let it loose in nature. We can’t have that bastard procreating with another, smaller spider and creating zombie spider babies that take over the world.”

He just stared at me like I’d lost my mind.

And then shook his head as a smile played across his face. “You’re entertaining, I’ll give you that.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you.”

“It was meant to be one.”

We froze, both of us smiling at each other.

“Sleep,” I whispered. “You’ve got a busy day tomorrow.”

“Yup.” He gripped the bucket in one hand; the muscles in his forearm flexed. “Take some ibuprofen and ice the spider bite. If you feel any muscle weakness or tightness in your chest, let me know and I’ll prescribe you something.”

“Ah, the power of the pen.”

He rolled his eyes and waved with his free hand. “See you tomorrow morning at eight, Austin.” He hesitated in the doorway. “Be sure to wear something work-appropriate.”

“Oh, so you want me to wear a bike uniform?”

He flipped me off and quietly shut the door against my laughter.

I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE
Oxford Series #4

Loveswept

New York City’s hottest bachelors are stirring up trouble in this fun, flirty Oxford Novel, as a love triangle forces a feisty beauty to choose between winning back Mr. Right or giving in to Mr. Wrong.

Taylor Carr has it all—a sleek job in advertising, a stunning Manhattan apartment, and the perfect man to share it with: Bradley Calloway. Even after Bradley dumps her for a co-worker on move-in day, Taylor isn’t worried. She’ll get her man eventually. In the meantime, she needs a new roommate. Enter Nick Ballantine, career bartender, freelance writer—and longtime pain in Taylor’s ass. Sexy in a permanent five-o’clock-shadow kind of way, Nick knows how to push Taylor’s buttons, as if he could see right through to the real her.

Nick’s always trying to fix people, and nobody could use a good fixing more than Taylor. Sure, she’s gorgeous, with mesmerizing silver eyes, but it’s her vulnerability that kills him. Now that they’re shacking up together, the chemistry is out of control. Soon they’re putting every part of their two-bedroom apartment to good use. Then Taylor’s ex comes crawling back to her, and Nick figures she’ll jump at the chance to go back to her old life—unless he fights for the best thing that ever happened to him.

PRE-ORDER TODAY!
Bradley froze when he saw her, and she was pretty sure she saw the urge to turn and run flicker across his face.
Again she felt a stab of disappointment. In him. And in herself for apparently having misread him. She’d thought he was better than this.
Bradley’s eyes moved between her and Nick, and though he didn’t look all that surprised at seeing them bickering, his gaze grew hard as he saw Nick’s hand on Taylor’s face.
Nick, naturally, took his sweet time removing it, and she resisted the urge to kick his shin.
“Morning, Bradley,” Taylor said, pleased that her voice sounded calm and friendly. As well it should. She’d had plenty of practice over the better part of a year pretending that she and Bradley were nothing more than colleagues.
Other than a few close friends who knew they were dating, they’d done a mostly decent job of hiding their romantic relationship from coworkers. Better than she and Nick had done hiding their antagonistic one.
“Hey, Taylor. Nick,” Bradley said.
He entered the room and reached for a coffee mug, turning his attention toward the other man. “Didn’t realize you’d taken on another assignment. What for?”
“Not sure,” Nick said, checking his watch. “Have a meeting with Cassidy in a few to find out.”
“Here’s hoping it’s an offsite gig that takes you far, far away. Maybe he needs someone to cover Siberian winters,” Taylor said to Nick, even as she watched Bradley out of the corner of her eye.
“Don’t need to travel to find severe winter. It doesn’t get any chillier than right here,” Nick retorted, waving his hand over her head in a storm cloud gesture.
She shoved his hand aside, her attention still on Bradley, who was determinedly avoiding her gaze.
Coward.
It was going to be darn hard to get him to see reason when he wouldn’t even make eye contact.
Nick, ever too perceptive for his own good, noticed the tension and gave a quick look between her and Bradley, his gaze turning speculative.
She shot him a warning look that clearly said, Dont.
He shot an answering smile that clearly said, Watch me.
“Bradley, don’t suppose you’re in the market for a roommate?” Nick asked, his voice deceptively casual.
Bradley’s head snapped up, and finally, finally his blue gaze collided with Taylor’s. Dammit. Why did he have to be so beautiful? He was like a mischievous angel, all twinkling blue eyes, dimples, a sexy cleft in his chin, dark blond wavy hair . . .
“What?” he asked Nick distractedly, still looking at Taylor.
“Taylor here wants to share her original crown molding with someone.”
Bradley winced, and Taylor felt a little surge of gratitude toward Nick. He couldn’t have known it, but it was the perfect jab. She and Bradley were both into prewar architecture—had eaten up the broker’s description of all the building’s original elements.
Taylor should be sharing that crown molding with Bradley. And he damn well knew it.
His eyes met hers in silent misery—an apology that she wasn’t quite ready to accept. Heck, she wasn’t even ready to acknowledge it, because she had no intention of being dumped. Not by him, not by any man.
Taylor ignored the guilt written all over Bradley’s face as she held his gaze. “Yes, it seems I unexpectedly have a free bedroom and more rent than I can afford. If either of you knows anyone looking for a roommate . . .”
Bradley’s handsome face twisted regretfully, and he set his coffee aside, taking a step toward her, apparently forgetting—or not caring—that Nick was still in the room.
“Taylor. Damn it. I told you—”
“Actually, I do,” Nick said, interrupting.
Taylor forced her gaze away from Bradley’s pleading face toward Nick’s smug one. “You know someone who needs a roommate?”
“Yup.” He crossed his arms and watched her.
She made an impatient gesture with her hand. “Who? It can’t be one of your ex-girlfriends—I don’t want to inadvertently hear any gross details about you. And not one of your frat-boy guy friends—my living room isn’t cut out for Call of Duty.”
“Yeah, because that’s all I do all day.”
She rolled her eyes. “Okay, for real, who is it?”
His grin was slow, sly, and the very definition of trouble. “Me.”
