REVIEW – FOREVER RIGHT NOW by Emma Scott

SYNOPSIS

***STANDALONE new adult romance from the author of The Butterfly Project and the Full Tilt Duet***

Darlene Montgomery has been to hell and back…more than once. After a stint in jail for drug possession, she is finally clean and ready to start over. Yet another failed relationship is just the motivation she needs to move from New York to San Francisco with the hopes of resurrecting her dance career and discovering that she is more than the sum of her rap sheet. As Darlene struggles in her new city, the last thing she wants is to become entangled with her handsome—but cranky—neighbor and his adorable little girl…

Sawyer Haas is weeks away from finishing law school, but exhaustion, dwindling finances, and the pressure to provide for himself and his daughter, Olivia, are wearing him down. A federal clerkship–a job he desperately needs–awaits him after graduation, but only if he passes the Bar Exam. Sawyer doesn’t have the time or patience for the capricious—if beautiful—dancer who moves into the apartment above his. But Darlene’s easy laugh and cheerful spirit seep into the cracks of his hardened heart, and slowly break down the walls he’s resurrected to keep from being betrayed ever again.

When the parents of Olivia’s absentee mother come to fight for custody, Sawyer could lose everything. To have any chance at happiness, he must trust Darlene, the woman who has somehow found her way past his brittle barbs, and Darlene must decide how much of her own bruised heart she is willing to give to Sawyer and Olivia, especially when the ghosts of her troubled past refuse to stay buried.

*****Dee’s Review*****

All The Stars**********************

Another epic novel by Author Emma Scott that feels like a beautiful hug to the soul. Forever Right Now is a story about second chances. Every character in this story carries some kind of disappointment, either against others or themselves, but through unexpected love, they will experience miracles that will make them forgive and learn to accept that there’s also good, even when all they could see was bad circumstances.

Darlene moves to San Francisco in search of a fresh start. She always has that little voice inside her head trying to bring her down, making her believe she can only fail, but regardless she keeps trying. She moves into a place that quickly turns into a home, full of people ready to give her love and friendship. There’s also the grouchy neighbor Sawyer, at first glance, he is gorgeous but also cold and distant, but Darlene’s larger than life personality will dig in deeper and realize that there’s much more than meets the eye when it comes to Sawyer.

Sawyer is a single dad trying to provide for his daughter. He is working hard to finish school and become a lawyer. His dream has always been to be a prosecutor and help put away the bad guys in jail. Sawyer is a pretty black and white kind of guy, he believes one should face the consequences of their actions, but little does he know that the new woman who just moved into the apartment upstairs will come like a tornado and change his life as he knows it.

These characters are complete opposites, yet together they are perfect for each other. Their stories are so unique and unexpected and reading it gave me a beautiful high from which I didn’t want to come down. But I guess that is the Emma Scott effect, she writes stories that grab you and take you away, she speaks the same language as your heart and makes you cry and smile all at the same time.

This story has something for everyone, like a treasure you didn’t know you were looking for. So much joy and humble lessons will stay with me forever, just from reading Sawyer and Darlene’s story.

This book is a must-read. What are you waiting for? Order it now!!!!

*****Patty’s Review*****

She gave a little gasp and her lips parted for me. I deepened the kiss while wondering how I’d lived twenty-four years without having kissed her before.
Kissing Darlene was kissing all of her. I tasted the sweetness of her, the energy she put into her art. Her breath suffused my mouth and I inhaled her.

This is life.

Emma Scott is one of those authors that I categorize as phenomenal. Her storytelling ability is simply pure genius. Just pick up one of her books and you’ll become an instant fan for life. Her popularity has nothing to do with hype and everything to do with her pure raw talent! Her stories are often haunting and they make your heart ache in a good way. This is my third book by this lovely author and I can tell you her characters are far from perfect, and it’s their flaws that make them truly beautiful. Darlene and Sawyer are sure to become fast fan favorites!

We met Darlene Montgomery in ”The Butterfly Project”. She was the sweet but self-destructive best friend of Beckett. Darlene is a very passionate person and her need to be loved has caused her to make some very bad decisions in the past. She was incarcerated for drug possession three years ago, but now she’s a recovering addict who’s been given a second chance by getting the opportunity to move from New York to San Francisco to embark on a new life. Darlene has a job lined up along with an apartment and all she has to do is make sure she stays clean and attends her NA meetings three times a week. Darlene finally feels optimistic about her future being in a city where no one knows about her tainted past. Some of the people who were close to her, like her family, have made Darlene feel like her mistakes and addiction are what define her as a person. But with this new beginning maybe she can work on healing her soul by shedding bad habits and returning to performance dancing. The last thing she needed was to fall in love with her gorgeous neighbor with a beautiful and precocious one-year-old daughter.

Sawyer Haas was on the fast track to a successful career in law as a prosecuting attorney. In his last year of law school and at the top of his class, he was looking forward to a highly sought-after internship with a prestigious judge but it only took a surprise visit from a one-night stand to turn his world upside down. Sawyer is no stranger to some of life’s inevitable cruelties. His mother was killed by a drunk driver when he was only eight years old and it has left a lasting impact on Sawyer. He has never been able to allow a woman to penetrate his heart, that is until he met his infant daughter, Olivia. When his ex disappears after dropping their daughter in his lap, Sawyer inevitably chooses to raise Olivia on his own. Almost a year later, he is nearing graduation and is holding on to hope that he will be able to make it to a year of having sole custody of Olivia so that he can make it official legally. Up until he became a single father, he had no problems with the ladies but his love life became non-existent by choice once he made Olivia his main priority. He wasn’t prepared for the beautiful new neighbor who would come into his life like a whirlwind and leave him captivated.

The build-up of the passion between them is a slow burn but once it ignites, a cold shower or two will be necessary.

Will a relationship between Sawyer and Darlene work out when they’ve fallen in love during a point in both of their lives where they have unresolved issues? Can Darlene trust in Sawyer enough to reveal all of her truths to him and will Sawyer’s feelings remain the same if he learns about her tarnished past?

LIVE – CUFFED by K. Bromberg

From the New York Times bestselling author, K. Bromberg, comes a new series about three brothers, the job that calls them, and the women who challenge them.

“I hate you. I never want to see you again.”

Grant Malone is not the reason I moved back to Sunnyville—at least that’s what I tell myself. Yet, those parting words I said to him back in third grade, ring in my ears every time a townsperson brings up one of the Malone boys. I thought time had healed my wounds. I was wrong. Nothing could have prepared me for how I felt when I finally saw him again.

Twenty years does a lot to turn a boy into a man. One who hits all my buttons—sexy, funny, attractive, and a police officer. But Grant is off limits because he knows too much about my past.

But I’m drawn to him. That damn uniform of his doesn’t hurt either. It’ll be my downfall. I know it.
What’s one night of sex going to hurt . . . right?
***

I’ve always loved Emmy Reeves.

That’s why I’m shocked to see her all these years later. The shy girl I once knew is all grown up.

Adventurous and full of life, she owns my heart now, just as much as she did back then. Convincing her of that is a whole different story.

I’ll give her the one night she asks for—like that’s a hardship—but when it comes to letting her walk away after, she has another thing coming. There’s no way in hell I’m letting her go this time without a fight.

Excerpt
Kieran
Hendry makes me feel like a woman. A desired woman. His words, the way he looks
at me, his body language. Everything he does is a huge turn-on. Yet I hate this
man. Loathe him. But damn, he has a way of touching me that makes me forget
every logical thought in my head. It doesn’t make sense to me how I can despise
him and at the same time respond so strongly to his touch.
It’s
my body reacting to him, not my head. It must be hormones and sex drive. Those
two things combined have the power to make people do things they wouldn’t
normally do.
“You’re
trembling.” He grazes the back of his fingers down my cheek and my stomach does
some kind of flip. “Do I frighten you?”
I
look away because I can’t tell him that it isn’t fear giving me the trembles.
He
grasps my chin and forces me to look at him. “Do. I. Frighten. You?”
“No.”
He
rubs my bottom lip with his thumb. “Then what is it?”
I
shake my head.
He
leans in for another kiss but stops before his lips touch mine. We’re so close
I can feel his breath on my mouth. Just like last night when my body turned to
mush.
I’m
quivering and my breath has become more rapid. I may even be a little
lightheaded.
His
bottom lip grazes mine, but he still doesn’t kiss me. “I’ll back off right now
if it’s what you want.”
I
don’t want him to back off. I also don’t want him to know that I don’t want him
to back off. Feels too much like giving in to something I’m not supposed to
crave.
“I’m
going to kiss you.”
I’m
his captive. We made an agreement. I must submit without a fight per our deal
to maintain Ellison’s safety.
Yeah. Keep telling yourself that,
Wes. Maybe if you say it enough, you’ll start to believe it.
His
fingers lace through my hair and he holds me prisoner when he lowers his mouth
to mine. I open, giving his tongue an invitation to come inside. The two meet,
and together they become erotic dance partners with Kieran taking the lead.
I’ve
only had one very forgettable kiss in my life. But this kiss… I could live a
million years and never forget it or the way I feel right now.
He
stops, his lips hovering over mine. His breath warm against my skin. “More or
stop? Your decision.”
He’s
asking me to venture further with him. My body says yes, but my head tells me
that one more step will take me to a place I shouldn’t go with this man. I’m
twenty-three and being kissed for the second time in my life. I don’t want this
to stop. “More.”

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by ATRIA Books}

No one would be able to determine from the outside of our house that our family of seven includes an atheist, a home wrecker, an ex-wife suffering from a severe case of agoraphobia, and a teenage girl whose weird obsession borders on necrophilia.

Merit Voss is a seventeen-year-old girl who not only has to deal with the normal teenage angst most kids go through, but add on her strained relationships with her very eccentric family. She seems to think that everyone else in her family has major issues but doesn’t necessarily notice that she too has some odd eccentricities. Merit collects trophies from garage sales and thrift shops. Whenever she is in need of a “pick me up”, she goes in search of a new trophy to add to her collection. Her family’s home used to be the town’s church. Her father hated the Pastor’s barking dog so much that he found a way to buy the church when the Pastor was not able to keep up with the mortgage payments. Now the entire Voss family lives in the semi-renovated church which still has the huge statue of Jesus on the cross in what they have turned into the family room. Merit’s dad ended up having an affair years ago when her mother was sick which later resulted in her parent’s divorce and her dad’s remarriage to the woman he ended knocking up. What’s bizarre is that her mother lives in the basement apartment of the church since she became severely agoraphobic.

Merit has decided to stop going to school and it seems as though the whole family is so wrapped up in their own lives that no one really notices what Merit has done. During one outing to a thrift shop she notices a cute guy checking her out and then somehow while she is leaving the store, the guy ends up kissing her. This is a monumental kiss that she feels zinging through her from her head to her toes, but then as if fate is messing with her, he ends up being her twin sister’s boyfriend. Merit is completely distraught over the fact that there is something her twin sister, Honor, has that she is finally envious of. The twins are nothing alike. While Honor is carefree and popular at school, Merit is more of a loner, quiet, and barely has any friends.

When Sagan, Honor’s boyfriend, starts showing up for dinner every night at the Voss’s, Merit is beside herself. She does everything in her power to keep her distance and to have as little interaction with Sagan as possible. Merit later meets a very odd man, named Luck, while shopping at the local supermarket and decides to give him a lift to his sister’s home. Turns out Luck’s sister is Merit’s step-mom, Victoria. It takes no time for Luck to fit right in since he’s as peculiar as the rest of the family members.

When Merit stumbles across some pretty huge and disturbing family secrets and then is forced by Sagan to see some of her own transgressions, she goes down a path of destruction and decides to call her entire family out on all of their secrets. Will uncovering all of the Voss family secrets tear them apart or heal all the wounds from the past?

Will a romance between Merit and Sagan be able to thrive or will Merit’s inability to acknowledge that she is drowning emotionally keep these two from finding happiness together. Merit will learn that things are not always what it seems on the surface and that she may have been too quick to cast judgment.

*****Mel’s Review*****

4 “You Bury Me” Stars!

-“Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing a mistake deserves is forgiveness.”

Merit Voss is a 17 yr. old senior in high school. She lives in a small town in Texas, in the middle of nowhere. She lives with her large unconventional, dysfunctional, unusual family, & often feels insignificant in her household, and almost invisible. She’s grown apart from her siblings, & lives in a home of secrets & lies. With so many strained relationships, she doesn’t feel like she belongs, or fits in anywhere. She thinks everyone hates her, & constantly feels like her family is falling apart. They’re screwed up & all have issues.

Merit’s family has a bad reputation in town, but she prides herself on being spontaneous, & doesn’t often think of consequences. She has a strange habit of collecting random trophies, & while out one day locks eyes with a random guy. Something about the way he looks at her makes her feel things she’s never felt before. There’s this electric connection between them, & she’s intrigued by him. His intensity catches her off guard & excites her. They share a kiss that completely rocks her world, & she can’t stop thinking about him, & wondering if he’s meant for her. When he unexpectedly pops back up in her life things get complicated as her two worlds collide.

-I can’t think of a single instance where I’ve ever been looked at like he’s looking at me right now. Like I fascinate him.

-The second he kissed me I was a goner.

-I wanted it all. I wanted to feel everything. That unexpected kiss made me feel alive.

-I feel the weight of my attraction to him. It’s so heavy, it feels like an anchor wanting to pull me under the water.

This was a thought-provoking book that has romance but is mainly about the life & family dynamic of Merit. It deals with love, forgiveness & some serious subject matter. It is a reminder that we live in a society where our peers put pressure on us, but often nobody judges us as harshly as we do ourselves. Nobody is perfect, & everyone has their own problems. This book really makes you think about what’s right & wrong, and not judging others since you haven’t walked in their shoes. It also reminds us how important communication is with the ones we love.

*****Dee’s Review*****

4 POWERFUL STARS****

Without Merit is a compelling story about love, family and the hardships of being a teenager. A book I think would be great to read and discuss with family or in a book club.

Merit Voss is seventeen and her life has never been easy. Her family situation is very unconventional and sometimes hard to be part of. Merit is angry and her heart feels heavy because if full of heavy secrets. But one day in the middle of the town’s square the eyes and the presence of a boy will make her feel light and happy for the first time in a long time.

Merit will learn a lot about herself through the life experiences of her parents, siblings and even strangers. Through pain and also laughter she will begin to recognize all the problems that surround her and also that there are also solutions.

In the end, one thing will be certain, and that is that family is forever and you can lose just about everything in life but one thing, hope.

Coming from a large and very dysfunctional family I was able to relate and even find comfort in this story. Colleen Hoover has the beautiful ability to create stories that reach deep inside your heart, stories that truly matter. Just like Merit, my heart felt lighter after I was done reading. Beautiful story!

5 My Angel Stars!

-You can find hope in the strangest of places, in the darkest of corners. Clutch it close, my darling. It’s yours and no one else’s. -Lemon Fair, the Queen of Meringue

Eloise Cates is a woman from Vermont that has lived a life full of pain & suffering. She’s grown up feeling unloved and unwanted. Her spirit is broken, & lately, she just feels tired and alone. All she has in this life is herself. She’s on her own & doesn’t need anyone. She’s learned over time she can’t trust men. She keeps up her steely facade, & the walls around her heart so she won’t ever be hurt again.

Gabriel Dalton is a man with a dark past he’s trying to move on from. He considers himself a work in progress, & chooses happiness. He’s at a place in his life where he wants to step out of his comfort zone & put himself out there. He meets a beautiful woman with a haunted look in her eyes. She’s a mystery, but he feels a strong pull towards her. He wants to get to know her & never wavers in his pursuit of her.

Ellie locks eyes with a beautiful, kind looking man named Gabriel, & the connection she feels frightens her. Something about his presence left her feeling shaken & vulnerable. As she gets to know him better he doesn’t seem scared off by her cynical, hard attitude. Her world seemed to always be falling apart, & he was so steady and solid. He soothes her with his gentleness & made her feel off balance with one look.

-His eyes held some sort of innocence I hadn’t seen before. Gentleness I certainly wasn’t used to.

-I was spellbound, caught once again in his gaze. No one has ever looked at me the way Gabriel was right then, not in all my life.

-A sense of sudden belonging washed through me, dancing in my veins. When was the last time I’d felt as if I belonged anywhere?

-I liked her. I liked the way she looked at me.

-She had intrigued me, caught my attention, and hadn’t let go. Something about her… called to me.

Gabriel saw things in Ellie she didn’t see in herself. He helped her to believe in herself & brought a sense of peace and calm to her life. He made her feel safe. He pushed her boundaries & eventually she let her guard down. He made her feel like she was someone truly special. Cherished & cared for like she’d never experienced. He began to breathe joy into the sadness that lived inside of her. Made her want to dream of possibilities, & hope for things she’d long ago given up on. She was taught to have a hard exterior, so nobody could ever hurt her. That you don’t get attached, because everyone eventually leaves, but suddenly she realizes she needs Gabriel as much as her next breath. This handsome, sincere, sweet man with a pure heart spoke to her soul, & helped her discover there was beauty in the missing pieces.

I really loved this book! It’s about two people who had a difficult past that has shaped who they are today. They still both carry around broken pieces, & have their own struggles. The book is also about loving & believing in yourself. Sometimes we need to learn to love ourselves before we can fully love another. This book dealt with some serious subject matter but was beautifully written. This stunning man was breathtaking with his love & his pure heart. I couldn’t get enough of Gabe. Mia Sheridan yet again wrote a book that touched my heart!

-“You’re so beautiful, Eloise. Every part of you.”

-My love for Ellie felt like a breath of life inside of me.

-I wanted to touch every part of him, to know his body the way I’d come to know his heart.

-The longer she’d touched me, the more a yearning rose in my soul, so strong it took my breath.

-Every part of his body held a place that felt as if it had been made just for mine.

-He was everything to me.

-Whatever you do, do it with your whole heart. -Lemon Fair, the Queen of Meringue

-“It’s not the things you do with love and good intentions that you end up regretting. It’s the things you don’t do that you have to live with.”

*****FIVE STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}

We touched and kissed with loving hands and open hearts, and I’d been right to think I’d never experienced anything like this before. It was tender and generous, and it was everything. Everything I’d never known.

MOST OF ALL YOU is a hauntingly beautiful love story that grabbed a hold of my heart from the start. I have been a long time fan of Mia Sheridan and this book solidifies why she is one truly gifted author. I found it hard not to highlight quotes from almost every page! Her writing is absolutely stunning! Not only is this a captivating love story but it’s filled with so much raw sadness. The Hero and Heroine may have come from different worlds but they share in common unimaginable abuse and devastating loss. Their tragic pasts have molded them into two people who are merely a fraction of the individuals they should have become because they’ve let their fears paralyze and control their lives.

I don’t want to give too much of the story away because I do think this is a story that’s best to go in to completely blind. I will say that I fell in love instantly with Gabriel Dalton. His sweet and gentle demeanor and his ability to find beauty in everyday things that we take for granted really touched me deeply. He is my second favorite Hero created by Mia. I mean he comes so very close to being as awesome as Archer!

In the beginning, I struggled with my feelings for the Heroine. She’s not an easy character to love because of the person she has become but once the author brings you to the heart of her story, I guarantee you will be falling in love with her just as I have. I actually think I ended up loving her a little more than the Hero. I saw a little bit of my younger self in her and hoped that she would find her way back to the person she was always meant to become.

There is definitely incredibly chemistry between Dalton and Ellie but honestly, if there weren’t any steamy scenes, I would still give this book Five Stars because it was the story and the characters that I fell completely in love with. This is one of those books that doesn’t need the schmexy to make it entertaining. Although I did enjoy those bits too!

Here are my overall ratings on the book:

Hero: 5
Heroine: 5
Plot: 5
Angst: 5
Steam: 4
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5

REVIEW – UNINTENDED (The Sin Trilogy, #5) by Georgia Cates

SYNOPSIS

The Fellowship saga continues with Kieran and Westlyn’s story in this standalone spinoff of The Sin Trilogy.

Captor becomes lover…

I’m a marksman. Mobster. Deadly assassin.
My job is to protect my brotherhood, but that isn’t my only responsibility.

I’m Kieran Hendry, the up-and-coming leader of The Order, and a new duty calls. I must take a wife.

A wife I don’t know.
A wife born into a position at the top of The Fellowship hierarchy.
A wife who will forge a strong alliance between her brotherhood and mine.
A wife I don’t want.

I knew next to nothing about Westlyn Breckenridge when I abducted her, but I quickly discover that she’s intelligent, strong, defiant, selfless. And beautiful.

One night with her is all it takes for me to see that she is no typical Mafia princess. I’m hopeful this arranged marriage won’t be the miserable union I imagined it to be. But convincing my intended to give us a chance won’t be easy when she sees me as the enemy. The brute who kidnapped her. The vile fiend who threatened to do as he wished with her body.

It’s true. I am all those things. I had cruel intentions. But everything has changed. My affection for her is unexpected. My love, unintended.

***Unintended can be read as a standalone novel although it is a novel accompanying The Sin Trilogy. It is best enjoyed after reading The Sin Trilogy and Endurance: A Sin Series Standalone novel.

*****Mel’s Review*****

5 I’m Yours Stars!

Westlyn Breckenridge is a gorgeous 23 yr. old woman who grew up in Edinburgh as part of The Fellowship. It’s the only life she known as the youngest daughter of a prominent family. When she’s suddenly abducted she’s terrified for her life. Then she meets the man who kidnapped her, & becomes defiant and angry.

Kieran Hendry is a 28 yr. old man who is the eldest of four sons. He was born into a position of power & is the future leader of The Order. It’s his duty to ensure the prosperity of his brotherhood & form an alliance with their rival, The Fellowship. After years of bloodshed they want peace. They propose two marriage treaties to bring together The Fellowship & The Order. He doesn’t want a wife, but is committed to fulfilling his obligation.

When Kieran lays eyes on the woman who will be his mate, suddenly his burden isn’t so heavy. She’s breathtaking, & he’s instantly attracted to her and her smart mouth. They make an agreement, but after getting to know her better he decides he wants a real marriage. He made a bad first impression & now wants a chance to show her a better side of himself.

Westlyn feels such intense sexual chemistry with Kieran. He’s intoxicating, & she’s never felt so wanted or desired. She should hate him, but she’s desperate for him. He’s a strong alpha male who takes what he wants, & he’s decided she’s going to be his wife. He wants her to be his future & has quickly become obsessed with her. He’s showing her respect & working hard to earn her affection, but can he win her heart?

-“I’d take you any way you’d give yourself to me.”

-“You’re going to love all the things I make your body feel.”

-I crave Kieran. I want everything he plans to do to me.

-This kiss… I could live a million years and never forget it or the way I feel right now.

-He has a way of touching me that makes me forget every logical thought in my head. It doesn’t make sense to me how I can despise him and at the same time respond so strongly to his touch

-I freely choose to be yours…

I loved this book so much! I’ve read the entire Sin Series, & this was my favorite. It was so damn hot, & I loved how crazy Kieran was for her. He was completely captivated & enchanted with Westlyn from the moment they met. She brought out a vulnerable, tender side of this sexy, tough guy. The captive falls in love with her captor as this arranged marriage becomes very beautiful and real.

Something inside me snapped.

“Chase, I need you. Please, come.”

Teagan’s words screamed from the screen of my phone. My heart started pounding and I started to sweat. I felt like I might pass out as I was sucked into a vortex of emotions and memories I’d tried desperately to forget.

Teagan Tessler was the love of my life. My professional soccer career was a big part of the future we planned to have together, but an offer with Arsenal, one of England’s premier soccer teams, sent me to London a year ahead of schedule. Just months after I left, Teagan betrayed me with my best friend without an explanation. I was completely and utterly destroyed.

Six years later, I can finally breathe again and my professional and personal life is in a good place; but, now this. I’d have to be insane to even consider ripping open those old wounds, but whatever she needed, it had to be huge.

The truth of my feelings resonated: I should shut off the phone and forget her forever, but my traitorous heart told me to get on a plane, no questions asked.

One decision can ruin your life… Maybe another one can save it.

EXCERPT REVEAL:

Chase

Six years since I left her. Six fucking years.

It seemed like I had no choice at the time; like it was the start of a dream, not the beginning of a nightmare. It was the biggest mistake of my life.

The offer from the English Arsenal Football Club was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I couldn’t pass up, no matter how much it ripped me apart to leave Teagan behind. Our plan was for her to finish college then come over there, too. It never happened.

Somehow, it all got fucked up. Royally fucked up. I spent years trying to figure out why it happened without finding any logical answers and then, I was determined to forget about her. I threw myself into the game, booze, and numerous women, but nothing helped most of the time. If I were honest, the pain never really went away and I felt the loss every goddamned day. I knew I never should have left, and that only made it worse. It was Teagan, and not soccer, who was my once-in-a-lifetime everything, but I thought we were madly in love and I completely trusted that we’d make it through it… I completely trusted her. We knew it would be a difficult couple of years, but I had no reason to doubt that things wouldn’t go as planned. I thought we were invincible. Yet, not six months after I left, she married my best friend behind my back.

Some best friend. Anger cut through me like a red-hot knife and settled in to sear my gut and tighten my chest. There was no one I hated more.

My heart ached whenever I allowed myself to think about it. She called and tried to explain once, but I didn’t want to hear it. No words could justify it. I felt betrayed; too devastated to find the will to function, let alone listen. Looking at her would have sliced me open to bleed out right in front of her, and after a betrayal like that, I’d be damned if I’d let her see me suffer.

Jensen tried to talk to me, too, but I was afraid if I saw him, one of us would die. What did it fucking matter anyway? There was no reason that could make it better, more believable, or easier to accept. I’d closed down, focused on the team, and stopped corresponding with either of them. It was the only way to breathe.

My eyes burned and my throat tightened. After all this time, it was still killing me. So often, I ached to call her, my soul crying out for hers, my mind railing that it was all a bad dream and if I could only hear that sweet voice, my reality would be righted. Over time, I realized keeping as busy as possible was the only thing to keep the memories from eating me alive. I was lucky that most of the places I played, and in London, I had zero memories of Teagan to haunt me, but Arsenal and its world-class program wasn’t worth it. A huge career and being one of the top ten soccer players in the world meant nothing. Nothing was worth losing Teagan, but I’d made a life for myself despite her. In spite of her.

Somehow, I moved on. I breathed in and out. I waited, prayed for, and crawled toward the day when it wouldn’t hurt. I was still crawling on the inside, but I’d learned how to camouflage it so no one could see it anymore. I was sure part of me was dead inside.

My parents and siblings knew not to mention her after the first few attempts. The rage and drinking binges that resulted had finally kept them quiet. Kat looked at me with a sort of incredible sorrow, and even Kevin stopped badgering me.

“Just leave it alone, Kev! I can’t fucking stand thinking about what she’s doing with Jensen. Nothing will justify it! If Jensen was bleeding out in the street, the reason still wouldn’t be good enough for her to be with him. It makes me fucking sick!”

I’d flung my mother’s Ming vase at my brother and it barely missed his head; shattering in a million pieces against the wall behind him. He stood there stunned for a split second as my chest heaved and his image blurred behind a haze of fury and tears. Then, he rushed at me, tackling me to the ground. He beat the shit out of me, leaving me broken and crying her name, asking God why she wasn’t mine, begging for relief that never came, wishing I could die right there because I couldn’t see any other way to end the horrible pain. I didn’t know if I was hitting at Kevin or Teagan’s memory, but afterward, he dropped to his knees and held on to me as I fell apart. The whole family looked on in stunned shock, all of them powerless to help me. It was New Year’s Eve and I’d gotten drunk off my ass to try to forget. Everyone left me alone ever since. My mother never even mentioned that vase. She found it at a garage sale and it was probably fake, but she loved to pretend it was real, and I had destroyed it. One more thing I shouldn’t have done that piled on the guilt. I’d ruined my own fucking life by leaving and I had to live with it.

As time moved on the devastating pain eased little by little, and faded in to a dull, ever-present ache. I came home to the States less because being there surrounded me with Teagan’s essence, her memory, and people who knew her and might talk about her. Not knowing where she was, or anything about her, made it easier and possible to survive.

Now, I was in a plane on my way to Atlanta fucking Georgia, because of a few well-scripted words that came across my phone via text message.

Chase, Kat gave me your number. Don’t be mad. I need you. It’s an emergency. Please come ASAP.

Teagan

I ran my hand through my hair. Kat. My mind screamed. My sister, Kathryn was tight lipped, telling me nothing beyond where I could find her. Apparently she’d kept in touch with Teagan all these years, and that enraged me. Goddamn traitor.

“Hmmph!” I huffed in disgust. So much for blood being thicker than water.

When I called Kathryn to confront her, all she’d say was that Teagan and Jensen had moved to Atlanta three years earlier when Jensen got a job with ESPN, and I’d have to wait for Teagan to explain the rest. He must not be very high on the ESPN food chain or I’d have known about his job there.

I didn’t understand why, but I was pissed at my sister. Why would Teagan leave her family…and mine, to live in a strange city with a man who was probably gone more than he was home? It made no sense. But then, none of her decisions made sense since I left. Not since she chose to marry someone else.

The burning ache I’d thought I’d buried flared anew twenty-four hours earlier when her name appeared at the end of her message. I’d felt like a sledgehammer just flew at high velocity into my gut, and left me gasping as the air left my lungs. I could hear that voice saying the words on the screen, as if she were standing right next to me. My heart exploded and blood rushed to my face like liquid fire.

I’d thought nothing would separate us; not distance…not anyone, or anything. Ever. I was so in love I must have been blind to what was really going on behind my back. And yet, years later, all she had to do was crook her little finger and I was dragging my sorry ass halfway across the world without knowing why.

“Welcome to Atlanta, Georgia. We thank you for flying with us today. We know you have many choices for…” The mad rushing of blood in my ears muffled the flight attendant’s words. My skin vibrated as anticipation throbbed through me, and I mentally shook myself. I needed to get my shit together. I couldn’t allow Teagan to see how much this still mattered. I had to be cool, calm… blasé’. She couldn’t know how she’d destroyed me. I’d worked hard to build an aloof persona off the field, and a superstar one on it. When I started to stand out, the sports world shortened my name from Chase to Ace, and I embraced it.

As I gathered my carry on, I braced myself for what I would see in a few short minutes. Would Jensen be with her? Could I take that? I wasn’t sure. I rubbed my hand over the back of my neck in agitation and then held it out in front of me. I was visibly shaking, so I curled my fingers into a fist in an attempt to steady myself. I was a bad motherfucker, solid as a rock, on top of my game and in the best shape of my life, so why the hell was I shaking like a pussy? As I started to walk out of the plane, I willed myself to calm down. I settled a cold mask into place over my face, praying to God it would remain unmoved when I saw her.

The seconds pounded in my head as my footsteps closed the distance to the main terminal, heavy and suffocating. I struggled to fill my lungs with air; sure I’d lose my breath forever the minute I laid eyes on her. Would she be different? I wanted her to be unrecognizable… resistible… no longer the woman I fell in love with… no longer my Teagan.

Please God… let me not give a shit. After everything I’d suffered, would that be so much to ask?

Somehow over the years, the bitterness and anger lessened and most of what I remembered was the intense love and longing. She haunted my dreams more times than I could count, and every time I woke up in a cold sweat missing her or wanting her, I wanted to scream.

I dug down deep for the anger I’d need to make it through the next couple of days. Two days was all I would subject myself to. Then I was gone and I’d put her in the past where she belonged. I had a game in Brasília on Saturday that I couldn’t miss and I was thankful for my contract.

What the hell am I doing here, anyway? I argued with myself. I should have used the game to skip it all together, but what if she was in trouble? My lips pressed together in anger. What the fuck did it matter to me? I shouldn’t care at all. I sighed heavily. Taking care of Teagan was Jensen’s fucking job now, not mine.

Against my will, I searched the countless faces, looking for those soft brown eyes that used to own my soul. I stopped in the middle of the terminal, as my phone buzzed in my pocket.

“Yeah?”

“Hey, lovie. I got your message,” Bronwyn said casually.

“I sent it twelve hours ago. Thanks for the prompt response.” Sarcasm dripped from my voice. She didn’t notice.

“So you’re in the U.S.? Ace, I mean… why?”

I was distracted as I kept searching for Teagan. “I thought you said you got my message. I told you that a friend needs me.”

“For what?” She sounded pissed, but then, “pissed” and “I don’t give a shit” were her two most prominent gears.

“I don’t know, Bronwyn. I’ll call you when I know more.”

“I’m going to bed, so don’t call until morning, hmm?” Her voice was bored and unconcerned; her whiny voice in her English accent was suddenly annoying as hell.

“The time difference is six hours, so hopefully I’ll be sleeping when you wake up. Remember, my body is on London time.”

“Oh, yeah. Well, then just call when you can. Good night, lovie.”

“Bye.” It annoyed the hell out of me when she called me that, and she knew it. I shoved the phone into my back pocket of my dark jeans, my mind immediately dismissing the woman on the phone.

Where was Teagan? I scratched my stomach through the fine linen of my dark blue button down. I’d left it un-tucked, only taking time to change my pants and shove three changes of clothes and my running shoes into a small bag before rushing straight to the airport. I left the club immediately after speaking to Kat.

I was tired and impatient as I put my hands on my hips and turned, stopping dead when I saw her moving slowly in my direction, weaving through the crowds. She looked thinner and more fragile; her skin seemed more translucent against the darkness of her flowing hair, still as long and luxurious as I remembered. My breath caught in my throat at the sight, my heart thudding sickeningly in my chest as time rewound in an instant. I wanted it to stop beating. I didn’t care if it killed me or if I had to rip it from my chest; I just wanted it to fucking stop.

Her brown eyes were huge as she looked up into my face, still owning me as much as she ever had, as she closed the last few yards between us. The sadness surrounding her was so heavy I could almost taste it.

“Hello, Chase.” Her voice rocked through me. The same voice that still haunted my dreams on occasion.

My hand moved to my chest, seeking to ease the tightness that prevented me from speaking. I swallowed hard as I took in her smallness in jeans and summer top that left her shoulders and arms completely bare, except for the thin straps. The yellows and oranges in the floral print made her hair appear darker and emphasized the faint flush on her cheeks.

My arms ached to reach for her and drag her against my body. The pull was tangible and I could see the same battle flash across her beautiful features. She was still so goddamned beautiful.

“Teagan…” Her name fell from my lips unwillingly as emotions I’d tried to ignore, surfaced.

We stood there, staring at each other until finally, my left hand reached for her right one. Our fingers entwined as easily as if we’d never been apart, and her eyes filled with glistening tears and then two fat drops rolled down her cheeks. The years fell away as, unable to help myself; I pulled her to me, and gathering her close then turned my face into her hair. She still wore the same perfume… still felt perfect pressed close to me. My breath left my lungs. Her arms flew around my neck as I lifted her easily into my embrace as a deep sob broke from her chest.

“Chase. Oh, God. Thank you. I honestly didn’t think you would come.”

My hand cupped the back of her head and protectiveness filled every cell in my body. No matter what happened, I couldn’t stand to see her in pain. “What is this about? Why now?”
